Do use a handbag still

Since paying by phone has taken over and less use for cash or cards I never seem to use a handbag. Off I go with just my phone and coat with various things tugged in pockets. But I feel that I need to re-organise my self. Do you still have handbag, purse, phone all separately? The last purse I used was a massive spotty cath kidston one!

Back pack never used anything else.

I think those who don’t use bags are more popping somewhere for a short time, not going to the office for 8 hours.

for work days, I usually have - small purse, phone, keys, work pass, small pencil case (yes, I need more than one pen, this is a common thing for people who don’t have a regular desk to carry), notebook, tissues, kindle/book, water bottle, small pouch with plasters, paracetamol etc, another small pouch with sanitary towels, hand cream, hand sanitizer, lippy, lip salve, face powder, umbrella, reading glasses, snacks.

sometimes I also am organised enough to take a packed lunch. In the summer, remove the umbrella, add sun cream and shades (or as we live in Britain, keep the umbrella)

I have, however branched out into nice rucksacks for carting all my crap about. (Just as fashion magazines tell me that young people are embracing the tote bag again. )

I do work full days in an office but commute by car and have my own office and desk so all I really need are keys, phone and earbuds. A commute by train and hot-desking would be different. I take my lunch in a separate insulated bag, laptop in its own bag if I have taken it home (rare) and take the other things in a small crossbody bag. When I go out at lunchtime (most days) I use pockets and leave the bag behind if I have got a coat or take the bag if not.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 10/02/2024 17:48

@EndlesslyDistracted - about half the stuff I cart to work is stuff in previous jobs I would have bought at lunchtime and then left in my desk drawers.

StarTwirl · 10/02/2024 18:08

I haven't worn a handbag for years

I love my trusty 7 year old Herschel XL heritage backpack

I also love a crossbody bag

I have a few different ones

Ones for going out out

Light summer ones

My current one in use daily as it's waterproof, light and surprisingly roomy for its size is a ROKA Paddington. I love it. It has zipper compartments inside and out so it's very useful and well designed

Ponderingwindow · 10/02/2024 18:11

I need to carry 2 epipens, antihistamines, and safe hand soap so I never go anywhere without my bag.

Whizzgosh · 10/02/2024 19:33

I don’t like carrying a handbag and almost never take one on a night out, I just take my phone and Vaseline (and keys if needed). I have a cross body bag that I carry if I need to, maybe for a daytrip or city centre shopping. My work bag is my work bag, not a handbag, I’d definitely never carry anything that big at any other time.

Zone2NorthLondon · 10/02/2024 20:14

Night out have a tiny cross body phone bag. Fits phone, keys, lippy, cards

It's a bit untidy to have stuff shoved in pockets.

And???

I don't live my life to please others, so I give zero fucks if people think it's untidy!

@BiddyPop I use a very casual canvas bag. When I do the school run, go out & about. I try not to take the kitchen sink, so regularly have to tip it out & declutter!

when I'm just popping into the village on foot (15 min walk) or out walking I don't.

i don't 'do' fussy 'handbags' & absolutely have no interest in designer ones. Thankfully my life is casual enough not to EVER need to 'wear' a bag 🙄🙄

Fgs, calm down. The other poster was just expressing her opinion - she wasn't telling you what to do.

I agree with her. I think it does look untidy and often just asking to lose something or get it pinched.

I never bother with an umbrella either unless the rain is torrential. I don't think I'm likely to go rusty if I get a bit wet 😆😆

You clearly don't have naturally curly hair!!!

pictoosh · 10/02/2024 21:41

Yep I don't like having my pockets stuffed. If it's purse, phone and keys it's fine...but hat and gloves and glasses all need a bag. I lost a great hat once when it fell out of my pocket.

megletthesecond · 10/02/2024 21:43

Just a uniqlo cross body bag. I still need a brolly and water along with purse, phone keys etc and it won't all fit in my pockets.

RampantIvy · 10/02/2024 21:46

Why do so many people need to carry water around with them all the time? I only have it on a long drive or a long day out where I know that getting a drink might be difficult.

I only carry water if I'm on holiday, I'm out and about doing a lot of walking and it's really hot and even then probably more likely just to buy something when I'm thirsty.

boozeclues · 10/02/2024 21:54

I have a few mini cross body bags I use at work, all my big bulky shit I need goes into my laptop bag and my phone, car keys etc go into the smaller bag. Mainly because I don’t have pockets in my work clothes (think very boring office casual)x

At weekends if we are out I too just stuff everything in my coat pockets and have a little leather backpack I will use if it’s two warm to wear a coat

RandomUsernameHere · 10/02/2024 22:12

Hardly ever, unless I'm travelling. I only need my phone and my house key most of the time.

megletthesecond · 11/02/2024 08:13

rampant I walk almost everywhere. It's 2 miles to work for example. Add in carrying a laptop and shopping bags and I quite like a sip of water some days.

I've noticed this too, how did we survive as children as I don't remember ever taking a bottle of water everywhere with me and we didn't die of dehydration.

I take a bottle to work and the gym and that's it. I'll have one on my bike too. But a bottle of water adds weight so why would you want to carry it around in a handbag all day?!

RampantIvy · 11/02/2024 08:30

We have a water fountain at work, but as our office has arctic air con I prefer a hot drink.

I have naturally curly hair, I don't use an umbrella as when I do I tend to leave it on the train or the place I'm visiting. I'll let my hair go wild and the ringlets tighten.

PumpkinSpicedTea · 11/02/2024 08:34

I've noticed myself going out more often without a bag. Yesterday I met a friend for coffee and just shoved my keys and phoned in my coat pocket! This would have been unheard of years ago for me 😂

I think having wee ones has changed my thinking as I've got a rucksack changing bag when we all go out.

Although when its summer time and I don't wear a coat I do love a cross body bag to carry sunglasses and everything else needed.

I used to be a bag person so do feel sad I don't use them as much! Then if I have a rare night out I struggle to decided what bag to use!

It definitely looks untidy and a bit scruffy imo!!!

The ostentatious carrying of water is a fashion thing that has been going for a long time. 'Drinking enough water' has become 'carry a huge water bottle with you at all times and sup from it like you're navigating the Sahara'.

Those Stanley cups have made me laugh. Younger people at my work - they're never more than 10 feet away from a tap but here they come, banging down their giant sloshy contraption. All the rage on Tik Tok I believe. How to show off with tap water.

Btw I think having a bottle of water is fine. Handbags are good for carrying them.

ducksinarow123 · 11/02/2024 09:44

In winter I don't bother with a bag much. I rarely go for days out, and my coat pockets are big enough for phone, keys, cash etc. summer is another matter though, because summer dresses either don't have pockets, or if they do they look ridiculous with a bunch of keys stashed in them so I always have a handbag in summer. Just a crossbody one, for keys, phone, spf, waterbottle etc. I'm more likely to be spending a few hours outdoors so need more "stuff"

That pretty much describes me - minus the water bottle unless I am out for a long time with no access to a drink.

I saw the Uniqlo bags when I visited their shop in London last summer and don't get the love for them TBH..
