Do use a handbag still

Since paying by phone has taken over and less use for cash or cards I never seem to use a handbag. Off I go with just my phone and coat with various things tugged in pockets. But I feel that I need to re-organise my self. Do you still have handbag, purse, phone all separately? The last purse I used was a massive spotty cath kidston one!

I haven’t used a proper handbag for years - when I look at my old “classic” ones they just feel a bit dated now. I either just use pockets to carry the essentials (phone, lip balm, tissues) or if it’s a day out I’ll take a canvas tote or a rucksack. Occasionally a very small crossbody if I’ve no pockets. My lifestyle is very casual though!

ThatWriterInTheCorner · 09/02/2024 22:27

I have a lovely leather pocket belt, which has a surprising amount of places to put and organise stuff, while also looking as if it doesn't (so nobody asks me to 'just pop this in your bag'). And also leaves my hands free. The fact that it also satisfies my desire to dress slightly like a pirate at all times is an extra bonus.

@rainydogday

I always take a handbag out. Because I have a lot of stuff. Purse, tissues, lippy, mobile phone, inhaler, reading glasses, pens, house keys/car key, little notepad etc... But if I am popping into the high street in my market town, I park up, and just take my phone. It has my debit card in it - and about £50 cash. That's all I need to buy stuff.... and the phone counts my fitbit steps and heart points!

Ditto if I go to someone's house, or to the town market day (twice a week,) I park up and just take my phone. ALSO, when I go shopping around Morrisons, or Aldi, or Iceland, I just take my phone (with cash and debit card in it.) So although I always take my handbag out in the car, I carry my handbag around about only a third of the time I would say.

I could not just shove everything I need when I go out into my pockets... as someone suggested - I'd find it really awkward and uncomfortable lugging stuff about in pockets. I find the word 'mumsy' for someone who carries a handbag a bit rude and misogynistic to be honest.

Pencil case - LOL! I thought that I carried a lot around with me 😂

I'm not sure why that's so amusing. Probably 50% of the time I go out, it's because I'm going to be sitting in a meeting taking minutes for three hours at a time. I get through a lot of pens and pencils.

Unless I’m just walking the dog, I take my handbag everywhere

Yup, me too. Various sizes of bag as the choice depends on where I am going, but always prefer to have one.

I don't get people who put their cards and cash n their phone case. That's a lot of inconvenient stuff to lose at once.

rainydogday · 09/02/2024 22:47

@EbonyRaven sorry to cause you offence with my 'mumsy' word. I guess what I was referring to was I feel a bit old fashioned.

I said I have my debit card in my phone and £50!

A debit card and £50 is a lot to lose at once? Confused

Maybe for you, but not for me.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 09/02/2024 22:59

I always carry a bag. I have very similar to the Uniqlo one above, but in leather from Arket, and also a couple from Cos. I carry my phone in my pocket and generally pay with ApplePay, but in my bag I have various bits - card holder with a coin section, brush, lipstick, tampons, AirPod case, tissues, umbrella, pen, painkillers.

Funnily enough I was in a shop today where ApplePay and card tap were both down and I had to enter my card in the machine and put in my pin. It was a struggle to remember it!

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 09/02/2024 23:05

I'm not particularly interested in bags in the sense that designer deluxe bags don't interest me at all but if I'm going out I always have a cross body bag of some sort.

I can't stand seeing phones, cards etc being stuffed into pockets. It's just asking to lose them have them stolen. And it ruins the line of clothes

mondaytosunday · 09/02/2024 23:10

No, unless I need to take my insulin with me then I use a small cross body bag that doesn't fit much else. Keys and phone in pockets, and my phone has a case for cards and paper cash. I'm constantly caught out at supermarkets that require a pound coin for the trolley. I don't need to carry anything else.

BobnLen · 09/02/2024 23:11

Even f I just use my phone for paying, I still need a bag for tissues, gloves, keys, pen, purse, glasses, I wouldn't fit it all in my pockets

£50 and a phone is a lot to lose. I earn way, way ,way above the average wage and I wouldn't be so flippant about losing £50.

Losing my phone would be a nightmare. I don't have any cards save to my phone but the tedium and hassle of having to log into various Gmail accounts, live.com, bank accounts, Amazon, NHS, Pension and Share websites etc,etc doesn't bear thinking about.

As I said I hate seeing phones stuffed into the back pockets of jeans.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 09/02/2024 23:15

Yes, pretty much all the time (unless I'm just going out for 5 mins to do the school run). I have other things to carry besides just my phone. My keys, maybe a tampon, often a bottle of water, sometimes sunglasses, sometimes an umbrella, sometimes gloves. Also currently need to carry my Invisalign case if I'm likely to be eating while out, as I'll need to take my Invisalign out.

baubletits · 09/02/2024 23:17

Probably sound like a right weirdo but I don't feel normal if I'm walking around not carrying a bag, I feel awkward and wouldn't know what to do with my hands except put them in my pocket!

Plus I always like to carry far too much crap around with me 😁

BobnLen · 09/02/2024 23:18

It's a bit untidy to have stuff shoved in pockets.

I have a lot more than that to my name but if I was out in town and it was all I had on me and someone swiped it, I would have to walk home before I could even report it missing, cancel the card and SIM etc etc.

Shinyandnew1 · 09/02/2024 23:21

No, I have a handbag with purse, phone, keys, tissues, lip balm, glasses etc inside.

BobnLen · 09/02/2024 23:23

I have a Fatface crossbody bag, leather, they are not too expensive and often in the sale, usually a fair few pockets and one big enough for a large phone

RaininSummer · 09/02/2024 23:24

My pockets would be bulging without a bag to hold my stuff: phone, hairbrush, tissues, lip salve, umbrella, keys as a minimum.

IloveAslan · 09/02/2024 23:26

I'm not in the UK and still see a lot of bags here. Now that I'm not working I carry a small backpack, but if I don't have that then I use a bag. I always have a small purse containing various painkillers, allergy pills, buscopan etc., glasses, a small notebook/pen, tissues, my keys, a folded up nylon bag, and my wallet, as well as my phone, and sometimes an umbrella. I actually don't like loading pockets up with things anyway and would use a bag for preference.

Pigeonqueen · 09/02/2024 23:29

I always have a large ish cross body multi pocket bag. I have tons of stuff in there - bottle of water, purse with lots of membership cards to things, keys, phone, various medications I need, glasses etc etc. I can’t imagine going out without a bag!

BobnLen · 09/02/2024 23:45

If I go out for the day I take a largish Kipling Gabbie bag as they are the handiest for a day out. I can fit everything in there

2chocolateoranges · 09/02/2024 23:46

Love a handbag.

usually use a cross body bag that carries my purse, phone, house keys and car keys.

shoes and bags are my weaknesses.

I pave had a pay rise and just treated myself to a new bag and matching purse.
