Do use a handbag still

Since paying by phone has taken over and less use for cash or cards I never seem to use a handbag. Off I go with just my phone and coat with various things tugged in pockets. But I feel that I need to re-organise my self. Do you still have handbag, purse, phone all separately? The last purse I used was a massive spotty cath kidston one!

I do all the time and usually have a reusable carrier bag. For those of you who only takes your phone where do you put your shopping?

I think since lockdown bags have gone the same way as heels for a lot of people. That’s certainly my observation, anyway.

They’re not always comfortable/practical and there are better options (a backpack or small crossbody bag or pockets).

Men don’t lug around tote bags full of crap on one shoulder, do they?

I don’t often see women with handbags day to day. It’s backpack/cross body small bag central. But I commute in London so maybe they’re all getting their handbags out at the weekend?!

These things are all classed as handbags surely???

To me a handbag is something clearly feminine rather than unisex, and while it can be a variety of styles it probably opens at the top. It is usually worn on one shoulder and has a double-looped strap for this purpose. The mental image the word gives me is my grandmother's traditional clasp-top, although even when I carried one it was never in that style. They are made to be carried by or be close to the hand, hence the name.

The bags I use and I think most people use as backpacks/crossbodies are more unisex and never worn in the way above. They don't meet the definition of "handbag" as I understand it.

Maireas · 10/02/2024 10:25

Well, I would say that cross body bags are handbags, but clearly definitions vary.

BobnLen · 10/02/2024 10:30

I think OP meant a bag of any description as she mentions putting things in pockets, rather than a particular type of bag.

@EbonyRaven sorry to cause you offence with my 'mumsy' word. I guess what I was referring to was I feel a bit old fashioned.

I think this is more down to the fact that certain bag styles and shapes go in and out of fashion, so if you are carrying an out of style bag you will probably feel old fashioned without understanding why.

The idea that there is timeless, classic bag style is a myth

New2024 · 10/02/2024 10:47

I love handbags. Quite like a relatively capacious cross body or messenger style. Used to love a hobo style shoulder bag but find those less practical now. I hybrid work and have to use a work laptop with docking station on my days in the office. The laptop travels with me in a backpack or tote bag - think brightly coloured. I also have a crossbody bag with me and can wear it and a ruck sack. I go to work by bus - 15 mins to bus stop from home, work bus stop right outside the office. In summer I cycle and wear similar combo

SausageRoll5862 · 10/02/2024 11:06

Yes! I LOVE handbags! If I'm just shooting out for a few minutes to the shops then I just grab my glasses purse and keys which I bung in my pockets but for everything else I NEED my handbag, partly as I always carry a paperback book in it ... I'm never seen without a book! ..... https://twitter.com/OhCobblers2That/status/1756271031373705306/photo/1 Here's mine, bought from a local charity shop for £3.50!

The problem for me is that I have loads of coats. I often wear a navy "raincoat" for work, but when it was cold a couple of weeks ago I wore a long woollen coat, and this week when it was properly raining I wore my Rains waterproof mac with a padded gilet under it. But not at work I wear a more casual rain proof FatFace jacket most of the time, or if it's really cold a padded waterproof, or out hiking I tend to go for a waterproof outer and windproof lightweight jacket under that to give me options.
I also have a couple of Kagool type things for if I go to the village shop but it's not cold but a bit damp. And a medium weight jacket for shorter walks. After badminton I just throw on a hoodie....

The benefit of a handbag is that I don't have to fish around in all these different coats to find the lipbalm, or the handy tissue pack, or my phone battery pack. The all just live in my handbag. So for work, I choose my coat, pick up my laptop bag, pop my phone and keys in my handbag and I'm off. Not having to decide which pocket is right for each item.

In my handbag will be keys (it's a big bunch because I have front and back door, plus car, plus two each for dp and my mum's houses), phone, battery pack, fold up bag, three lip balms, purse, card holder for my season ticket because I have to carry photo id with it, tissues, a small pouch with medication (paracetamol, migraine tablet, my tummy tablets, spare HRT in case I forget it), pen. Sometimes a small water bottle, sometimes a kindle, sometimes a hat (I'm not a fan of umbrellas).
I loathe having to use my debit card on the tube because it means it ends up in some random pocket and I can't remember where it is. I have an Oyster but for some reason it's stopped working.

Nightblindness · 10/02/2024 12:58

No, virtually never.
Phone and reading glasses in one pocket.
Keys and purse (with cards, not cash) in the other.
I actually prefer to carry my stuff in pockets as I feel they are much more vulnerable in a bag.

I would say they were much more vulnerable stuffed in pockets than they are in a bag!

And I would find a purse, keys, reading glasses, and phone, all stuffed into pockets very bulky and irritating.

brightpompoms · 10/02/2024 13:02

I use a cross the body small bag so I'm still hands free. The bag fits a purse, phone, keys, pen and tissues. Not to big that I can stuff it full of crap

Scootboot · 10/02/2024 13:04

I have one of these bags for around my office. I go in with a rucksack but if I want a bit of lip balm and my phone or a tampon which I really don't want falling out of a pocket in front of people, I carry this in my rucksack and then take this to any meetings as our offices are spread out across several buildings.

I do have a handbag, and use it if I am out all day - work, daytrips etc, but I don't need to carry all the paraphernalia that so many on here do if I am just going for a local walk or to the supermarket. I wear glasses and just need my phone and debit card.

I only have two winter coats that I wear regularly- one a smart wool coat and one a waterproof parka with internal zip pockets (which I wear 90% of the time in winter because it rains so much here), which is what I wear for walking/supermarket trips.

I tend to view handags as a practical accessory, albeit one I want to look good, but I don't get the fetishizing about designer bags at all. My current go to decent sized bag is this one that I use if I need to have a bag with me.

Like others I am more likely to use a small bag in summer when I am wearing a dress and need somewhere safe to put my phone, debit card, keys and sunglasses. If out for a walk I will wear my deeply unfashionable bum bag rather than carry a handbag. It looks odd clambering over rocks and through the woods carrying a handbag.

BiddyPop · 10/02/2024 13:06

I have a "handbag" that's actually a small backpack which I use a lot. Artisan producer, leather straps and fabric is an old sail recycled.

I also have about actual handbag (Sally's bags) that also sees a fair bit of use. And a nice plain black leather one for work events (I normally cart around a work backpack - but I use my small bag for small gigs and I have a larger M&S hold-all type for carrying a notebook, pen and some papers).

@EbonyRaven sorry to cause you offence with my 'mumsy' word. I guess what I was referring to was I feel a bit old fashioned.

All the 'trendy' teens have massive Longchamp bags or something like a cord tote so it's not old fashioned to have a bag.

Freetodowhatiwant · 10/02/2024 13:16

I cant be bothered any more either, most days I will either just have a phone and a key in my pocket or if I am going somewhere to work with my laptop will have a rucksack. If I am going out at night sometimes I take a small cross body bag so I dont have to carry my phone in my hand when my coat is off and can also take a lipstick. Remember the Mulberry days where everyone in London had a Mulberry bag? Feels like those are long gone. But then I don't work in London any more so maybe they are still ongoing, although I suspect with a different brand/s

In summer, maybe. In winter, no. My pockets are deep and cavernous and actually carry far more than just the items mentioned! Hence also why things feel safer in there than in a bag. It is closer to my person iyswim. But then, I find bags constantly slipping off my shoulder irritating, and I do have a tendency of throwing them round my back to get them out of my way, which is when I feel they are more vulnerable to pickpockets.

1TangoWhiskeyAlphaTango · 10/02/2024 13:19

No. I stopped using a handbag when I finally got pissed off with my husband always putting his wallet/keys/glasses in them for me to carry whenever we are out together - so, often, my gorgeous small designer perfect for outfit bag got stuffed to busting with all his crap and often hard to close shut and, well, you can imagine .....

So now, no, I no longer carry a handbag.

Maireas · 10/02/2024 13:23

Just because of him? Tell him to carry his own stuff.

RosesAndHellebores · 10/02/2024 13:24

Always have a handbag and couldn't manage or feel whole without one. Always carry:

Wallet
House keys (front door x 2, side door x 2, my office keys, gge key, key to side gate(
Car keys
Personal phone
Work phone
Pen
Lipstick
Tissues
Ear buds

I don't use my phone to pay for anything.

It just about fits it into a cross body. I use a rucksack for work (laptops, papers, note pads, etc).

My car is also a storage unit: mints, sunglasses, change, trolley token, bit of make-up, umbrella, etc.

I like a tote bag too, especially at weekends when I might buy something or if I'm travelling and want a book.

I have my eyes out for a sludgy gray something nice for summer - a bit bigger than a cross body and simple. Like Coach and Kate Spade but open to ideas. Budget up to £450.

Bags and shoes are weaknesses. Never many at the same time, but nice extravagant ones.

Gettingbysomehow · 10/02/2024 13:27

I think handbags are outmoded now. I carry a small rucksack/handbag. Its smart but hands free and I can go walking all day without swinging a bag around. A handbag makes me feel like a 60's housewife.

VanGoghsDog · 10/02/2024 13:29

If you're in or going to London, the Mind charity shops in Carnaby Street and Goodge Street get all the warehouse donations from Kate Spade, the Carnaby St had a few Coach things too. I got a Spade bag, brand new, for £95 last week, usual price c£350.

They have a few online too but not many. The shops both told me they get huge deliveries most weeks.

RampantIvy · 10/02/2024 13:37

I think I'm in a minority, but I really CBA with an umbrella. I like to keep both hands free. Admittedly, I drive to work, and if I go out in the rain at home I just wear a waterproof parka.

Growlybear83 · 10/02/2024 13:47

I never bother with an umbrella either unless the rain is torrential. I don't think I'm likely to go rusty if I get a bit wet 😆😆
