Do use a handbag still

Since paying by phone has taken over and less use for cash or cards I never seem to use a handbag. Off I go with just my phone and coat with various things tugged in pockets. But I feel that I need to re-organise my self. Do you still have handbag, purse, phone all separately? The last purse I used was a massive spotty cath kidston one!

@rainydogday yes. I love my handbag! I would love a recommendation for a new one though. I need one that has many compartments and can hold a lot.🤭🤭🤭🤗🤗🤗

Just a small cross body bag with a foldie uppy shopping bag just in case! Phone in pocket always. If the weather is bad, then a slightly bigger bag to carry an umbrella.

Same. I rarely carry a larger bag unless it's for travelling abroad or work.

MorrisZapp · 10/02/2024 00:11

I take a huge tote bag everywhere unless it's a night out, and then I take a smaller bag.

I've tried downsizing but it leads to frustration.

Ireolu · 10/02/2024 00:14

Always carry a bag if I can. I work in a sketch part of London. Lots of crime/phone snatching/pick pockets. Wouldn't feel safe with valuables in pocket.

Comedycook · 10/02/2024 00:17

Yes always have a handbag. I have my cards...I don't pay for anything with my phone because I'm a technophobe!

I also keep in it

Phone
Keys
Lipstick
Mints
Token for shopping trolley

DramaticBananas · 10/02/2024 00:24

I will walk to the corner shop without my handbag. I'll put my phone and purse in my pockets. But I am checking my pockets there and back to make sure nothing has fallen out. It's stressful. I couldn't go much further without my handbag, which is usually an odd looking TK Max find and regularly swapped around.

Changingmynameyetagain · 10/02/2024 00:28

I always have a bag, I prefer a cross body bag over a shoulder bag.
I have my purse, phone and keys, plus my AirPods, a lip balm, packet of tissues and my work ID and usually a couple of pens.
I very rarely wear a big coat, I hate the feeling of being restricted by them so I don’t often have pockets to shove stuff into.

TheCryingTheBitchAndTheFloordrobe · 10/02/2024 00:32

No, I haven't carried one in years now, barring occasional evening bags

Growlybear83 · 10/02/2024 00:38

EbonyRaven

I said I have my debit card in my phone and £50!

A debit card and £50 is a lot to lose at once?

Maybe for you, but not for me.

A debit card and £50 might not be a lot to lose at once for you, but for many people it's a huge amount of money to lose and a great deal of inconvenience to wait whilst a debit card is replaced! I think that's an extremely insensitive and boastful thing to say.

serioffe · 10/02/2024 00:44

Yes, I couldn't fit what I need in pockets, especially in summer when I stop wearing a coat. Using the Uniqlo bag at the moment. I have: a card wallet with about 20 cards (debit, student, art fund, library, zoo, loyalty, driving licence), lip balm, mirror, tissues, pen, cash purse, keys for 2 houses, portable charger, folding shopping bag, travel pass, sunglasses in summer, small bottle of hand soap, a single wet wipe.
I don't use my phone to pay for things, my phone battery is too unreliable and I feel more secure keeping banking separate from my phone.
I still tend to keep my phone in my back pocket, because I like to have it close to my body and not in a bag or coat pocket.
Most women I see on the streets have a handbag, I don't think it's common not to use one even if you pay for things by phone.

rainydogday · 10/02/2024 03:30

All these comments are so true. I used to feel lost without my handbag but it has slowly become the norm for me not to have one. My DD age 17 doesn't have one either. I hate it one I find her bank card in her jeans pocket! And she always has her phone in her back pocket! I can't remember when I first started using one as a young adult. I do remember my mum saying 'make sure you get one with zip'!

I have a dr martens mini backpack that I take everywhere. I never go for proper nights out and people don't dress up massively in London anyway. I also have a dr martens small cross body bag that I haven't used yet

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 10/02/2024 04:56

Not use a handbag?! Are you mad?!

Where else do the emergency lipstick, hand cream, money, eye drops (antihistamine), hair elastic, sunglasses, etc live?!

My hand bag is even big enough to carry a water bottle. Viva la handbag....lol.

I can walk out the door and the only thing I have to remember to grab is the keys and phone. I have everything else in my handbag already. (And I still somehow managed to forget my phone this morning...lol.)

BobnLen · 10/02/2024 05:19

Is this a mid life crisis, are you trying to emulate your 17 year old, phone in back pocket is what teens do.

Mummyoflittledragon · 10/02/2024 05:53

I always take a handbag with me. I carry things like painkillers and water wherever I go. This is something to ponder on actually. My dd is 15 and never takes a bag. A bit of cash in the phone case and dh’s card on her phone.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 10/02/2024 06:09

I wouldn’t be seen dead without a bag! I love them.

Tatonka · 10/02/2024 06:40

I can manage without a wallet, but need my keys and either sunglasses or an umbrella depending on the weather so I can't imagine not having a bag

BobnLen · 10/02/2024 06:47

A phone has sometimes taken the place of a purse not a bag, you can't wipe your nose on a phone and you still need your keys.

rainydogday · 09/02/2024 22:07

I feel so frumpy and mumsy if I do take one out. For example on a night out if I need to put keys, lipstick in it etc. mind you I am mumsey! If you were to buy a new bag what would it be? I don't mean high end designer, but what style? I do like a nice brown soft leather type.

I think the exact opposite, not having a hand bag looks dreadful, pockets bulging with keys, coats looking bulky due to overfilled pockets. I prefer my clothes to look streamlined, then add a bag with my essentials in. I really wouldn't cope without a handbag and where do the pocket stuffers find garments all with such generous pockets? I have 2 playsuits with small pockets, one denim dress, obviously jeans have them but I can't imagine my keys, phone and purse fitting in them. The shorts I wear to do the school run have pockets but they'd look so un shapely filled up.

WinchGirl · 10/02/2024 07:11

If I am going shopping or to work I always take a bag usually a cross body or shoulder bag as I like to have a few bits and pieces with me. Eg makeup, tissues, spare tights etc. But if I am going out wearing jeans in the evening I will just put my phone, keys, card in my pockets as I hate having to keep an eye on my bag. Formal occasions, always have a handbag as it completes the look of an outfit.

ballroompink · 10/02/2024 07:14

Definitely still a bag person although I only seem to use a proper handbag if I'm going somewhere smart, otherwise it's a massive canvas tote. I would pop to the corner shop with just phone/card/keys in my coat pocket but if I was out and about for any length of time I would feel like I need the bag - for putting bits of shopping in, water bottle, umbrella, random bits like sanpro and lipstick and then if I'm going to work, laptop, headphones, notepad, cables etc.

UseOfWeapons · 10/02/2024 07:20

I don’t even own a handbag! I do use rucksacks a lot, because I walk or cycle everywhere, and like my hands free.

BusterGonad · 10/02/2024 07:21

I'm getting a new handbag soon. A handmade knitted (sounds gross but is beautiful). It's quite unusual and I love it. It will definitely go with jeans as well as dresses. I usually carry my purse, phone, headphones, tissues, small pack of wet wipes, mini makeup bag (lip balm, paracetamol, plasters etc), diary, pen, mozzy spray, alcohol gel, glasses cleaning spray and cloth. I currently have the uniqlo one but I'm so bored of it, it was an emergency purchase as I really needed one that was quick and easy and goes with everything but now my heart desires the knitted hand made bag and come payday I shall be treating myself to it. I like the fact it's unique.

TiaSeeya · 10/02/2024 07:25

not a fan of cross body bags but have a hand held one - or if a Big Day Out or work have a Roka rucksack type roll top bag.

Hairbrush and glasses don’t fit in my pockets so if I’m out for more than an hour I’d always take these, plus as others have said at this time of year, umbrella. Plus tissues, a bit of makeup, AirPods, purse, plasters, headache tablets, small notepad and pen.

BusterGonad · 10/02/2024 07:25

And the uniqlo one is too small, I can't fit a water bottle in it, and if I'm out with my son I can't put a packet of sweets in there or a small purchase. The one I'm buying will be dual strapped. Handles and a shoulder handle. I'm a bit fed up of cross body.
