Everyday bag for under £2k

buckingmad · 29/01/2024 00:48

It’s my 30th and I’d like a nice everyday bag. Thinking something along the lines of a Mulberry Lily in brown or black with gold hardware but open to other suggestions. I want something classic and easy to throw on as often rushing around after young children! Big enough to put my phone, keys and a lipstick/small perfume.

Suggestions please!

You know you could just scroll past? Some people do have £2k to spend on a bag.

It doesn't surprise me that some people have 2K to spend on a bag, but that they'd want to spend that much on one😂

Apologies, @ fluster bluff, posted before highlighting your comment:

Do you always go through life buying the cheap stuff? Cheapest old car you can find that works. Cheap shoes. Cheap mass produced foods. Cheap clothing Ugh. What an unfortunate life”

No. But I appreciate value. Our income puts us in the top 10% but I abhor waste and would rather use our “fortune” wisely.

Most of our shoes were hand made in London 30 years ago. That’s why I know that anyone spending £2k on almost all of the brands mentioned on this thread is wasting their money on inferior quality goods.

What brands do you recommend for shoes and handbags?

Christmasusernamepending · 29/01/2024 23:20

Burberry do some lovely everyday bags with plenty of room in, or a fendi shopper bag

John Lobb for men’s shoes: my husband’s oldest pair were made 42 years ago and are still going strong. I can’t recommend any ladies’ makers in London: we travelled in Japan/Singapore and Hong Kong back in the days I needed dress shoes so I had them made there. I don’t use handbags, haven’t for donkey’s years. When I did, I usually bought them at Fenwicks. I can’t remember any “brands”.

None of them were anywhere near the then equivalent of £2,000.

Please tell me im not the only reading the £2k bit and thinking surely that's a typo...

You’re definitely not. I clicked out of curiosity.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 29/01/2024 23:39

@AliciaTried well you can sort of get your hand in if you really try but it’s not easy. I sometimes do when I can’t be bothered to undo it and then I end up having to undo it anyway because I can’t find what I’m looking for.

Thank you. I will pass on the shoe recommendation to my DH.

Thanks everyone. I did wonder about the chain digging in! We’ve got a mulberry store in town so will have to go in and try them. Really really tempted by a mini Alexa.

I bought a small gold Lily before Christmas thinking I wouldn’t wear it much, just when I go out of an evening.

But it’s turned into my every day bag and I love it. It’s the perfect size for phone, a bit of make-up, keys etc. I don’t find that the chain digs in but I use the chain doubled up as opposed to long, single strand. That said, I’m wearing over jumpers/coats. I may feel differently in the spring.

All this Alexa chat is making me think I need to dig my old girl out of the loft.

I am always fascinated by the mentality of spending thousands on a hand bag. Appreciate that people can buy whatever they like, but to me it just seems quite sad that they get their happiness in this way. A short rush of happiness and then on to buying the next thing.

Why assume it’s a short rush and onto the next thing? I love having a quality designer handbag. I do spend more per bag than many people but I have bags that are over 29 years old and my cost per use must be minimal by now. I pretty much have high street everything else. I have a cheap low end car.

Theres a thread about a cardigan in S&B at the moment where the OP is being told to wear what makes her happy. Surely the OP in this thread should be allowed to do so without criticism? Or is only if you’re buying something cheap?

Avacardo2023 · 30/01/2024 00:07

OP John Lewis has a sale on the Mulberry medium Lily - it's half price in certain colours. If you set your heart on one then nothing else will be as nice.

It would leave you plenty of money to buy a bag for life to carry it around in for fear of offending others with your extravagance.

jonesysy · 30/01/2024 00:11

what the actual fuck. A bag?

Appleblum · 30/01/2024 00:11

I think the loewe puzzle in small is nice and is good for an everyday bag.

Is it ok if you’re still using it 15 years later? Does that make it less sad? Or that each time I use another beautiful blue evening bag it makes me smile?

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/01/2024 22:20

A “decent amount”?
Sorry but £2K is an indecent amount for something that is unlikely to have cost more than £100 to produce.
A fool and their money are easily parted.

If the OP can afford it and likes the bag she isn’t foolish - she’s getting an item that will give her pleasure everyday at a price she can afford.

Don’t be such a killjoy

Most people would use many of the bags mentioned on her for years, Ms Judgy Pants

Ap24 · 30/01/2024 00:23

When these threads make it to trending they always bring the arseholes out of the woodwork. I don't understand why it upsets people that someone would want to spend their own money on something expensive.

A good proportion of my clothes, shoes and bags are now designer. I've built up a capsule wardrobe over the last 10 years and it's full of things I love. I know people who spend far more than me on fast fashion and end up throwing a lot of it away after a year or two.

BassoContinuo · 30/01/2024 00:24

I may just have been unlucky but I had a mini Alexa when they came out the first time. Loved it as a bag but it didn’t last very long used every day compared with some of my TK Maxx cheapies. Hopefully they’ve improved the quality as the prices seem to have gone up significantly.

I’d consider buying it again, as I did like the style, but probably not for use every day.

buckingmad · 30/01/2024 00:27

wow this kicked off 😂 silly me for thinking posting in S&B would get me non AIBU replies.

Not that I need to justify my decisions…I’ve worked really hard through uni and professional qualifications to get a well paying job and this is how I want to treat myself for a big birthday. At one point I was paying £600 a month to keep my horse, I don’t necessarily make decisions because they make the most fiscal sense 😂 I’m lucky enough to spend money on what makes me happy, it’s good for the economy!

And I apologise for my catty comment, I’m annoyed I lowered myself to their level but am 3 weeks postpartum so I can at least blame the hormones, lack of sleep and sore nips for being a miserable sod…

Ap24 · 30/01/2024 00:36

I quite like the mulberry lily. It reminds me a little of the Celine triomphe which I adore but I know I could use too regularly with it being calfskin. Aspinal of london do the Lottie bag which is again similar in shape, available in different leathers so hard-wearing and they're a good price for the workmanship.
