Everyday bag for under £2k

buckingmad · 29/01/2024 00:48

It’s my 30th and I’d like a nice everyday bag. Thinking something along the lines of a Mulberry Lily in brown or black with gold hardware but open to other suggestions. I want something classic and easy to throw on as often rushing around after young children! Big enough to put my phone, keys and a lipstick/small perfume.

Suggestions please!

A “decent amount”?
Sorry but £2K is an indecent amount for something that is unlikely to have cost more than £100 to produce.

“A fool and their money are easily parted.

If the OP can afford it and likes the bag she isn’t foolish - she’s getting an item that will give her pleasure everyday at a price she can afford.

Don’t be such a killjoy

i’m not a killjoy at all. Quality really does last a lifetime. Unfortunately, most “brands” don’t represent quality. Handmade in the UK by independent makers is always best.

I have a mulberry lily and hardly use it (chain uncomfortable) and a bayswater (too heavy). I have a bottega venata in woven espresso that I adore and use all the time so that would be my pick.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 30/01/2024 01:11

It doesn't matter if the OP put £50 or £10000, the comments would still be the same.

I don't see cars or holiday threads attracting the same vitriol but fashion ones always do, likely internalised misogyny.

Oh. So ludicrously expensive bags aren't really any good. That's useful to know.

MokaEfti · 30/01/2024 01:22

I have the Bottega Andiamo in fondant, it's above the £2k mark but I use it every single day and I love it.

I am always fascinated by the mentality of spending thousands on a hand bag. Appreciate that people can buy whatever they like, but to me it just seems quite sad that they get their happiness in this way. A short rush of happiness and then on to buying the next thing.

It's a short lived dopamine hit. A bit sad really

Avacardo2023 · 30/01/2024 01:41

It's not necessarily a short lived dopamine fix. A good bag will last for many years and give a lot of pleasure every time you use it, so cost per use is very low. Also some bags actually appreciate in value.

People spend thousands on cars, phones and tech, or vaping and smoking. Everyone should spend their money on what gives them the most enjoyment.

Holiday threads most certainly do attract the same vitriol. Woe betide anyone who dares mention multiple overseas holidays a year, because there’s a COL crisis, didn’t you know?!

Anyway, I think the best suggestion on the thread is the Loewe puzzle - looks great, but a tad over budget at £2.4k.

SurpriseSparDay · 30/01/2024 05:51

@MrsSkylerWhite - you and I must be of the same generation.

But the OP is 30. Are you sure that telling her she should have had something handmade in Japan, or bought it in Fenwicks 40 years ago is the most helpful comment you could offer?

I worry that it’s the sort of thing that has all of MN accusing anyone over 55 of being in the early stages of dementia …

John Lobb for men’s shoes: my husband’s oldest pair were made 42 years ago and are still going strong. I can’t recommend any ladies’ makers in London: we travelled in Japan/Singapore and Hong Kong back in the days I needed dress shoes so I had them made there. I don’t use handbags, haven’t for donkey’s years. When I did, I usually bought them at Fenwicks. I can’t remember any “brands”.

None of them were anywhere near the then equivalent of £2,000.

But now John Lobb shoes do cost £2k. What they cost 30 years ago is not the appropriate comparator- it makes no sense to call OP a fool for spending £2k on a bag while recommending £2k shoes 😂

Beefcurtains79 · 30/01/2024 06:18

OP, spend your money on a Time Machine so you can buy a hand made bag in Singapore, in 1975 😂👌.

Purplecatshopaholic · 30/01/2024 06:29

I find most Mulberry bags just too heavy for everyday use - I love the idea of using my old, faithful Roxanne more than the reality. I do like my Anthony though (love cross body bags). I can second Strathberry - lovely quality bags. My most used bag is a Vivienne Westwood shopper style, all slouchy and huuuuge so you get everything in. Enjoy picking your new one op (and tell us what you went for).

Nw22 · 30/01/2024 07:25

Polene quality isn’t what it used to be. Loewe quality is exceptional as is bottega.

Well, thank you for the free lesson so now we all know that class is shown by jumping into a conversation to insult people when you disapprove of how they spend their money.

But OP didn't ask about buying class, she asked about buying bags.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 30/01/2024 07:34

Bottega bags are indeed very beautiful.

My sister has a few and they are gorgeous.

I've used mine for 10 years.

It's ben to a handbag clinic and Mulberry fixed something on it for me as well.
My old Roxanne comes out in the Summer.

is 10 years for a handbag short-lived? I've had cars that lasted less than this, TBH.

That's funny, because to me it seems quite sad that someone can be constantly fascinated that not everyone likes the same things because they have such a facile and reductive level of understanding about it.

With a caveat that the Edge and the original hold differently and to try them both.

Also, just a reminder that this time of year is quite popular for price increases…

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 30/01/2024 07:56

Personally I find it a bit sad that some people are happy to carry around bags for life or cheap shite from TK Maxx. I have around 10 designer handbags and they all get used regularly, and have lasted for years. They bring me great happiness.

gentlydirk · 30/01/2024 07:56

OP I had the same responses when I posted a thread looking for a bag on a higher budget, ignore the comments you will get some really good recommendations as well!

I’ll also recommend LOEWE, I loved the Hammock along with the Puzzle also recommended. For less of your budget I would also go for Polene though it might not be quite big enough if you are looking for a ‘lugger’ to carry a lot of items and assorted child bits that you collect throughout the day, but a fine size for a normal day out!

Beefcurtains79 · 30/01/2024 08:15

Goyard also last ages and are beautiful.

Bigdoglittlecat · 30/01/2024 08:27

I absolutely love my Bayswater - those of you who say it’s short lived, it’s not. Literally every time I use it it makes me happy. I have had it for years and it has years left in it.
There’s nothing superior about you if you choose to buy supermarket handbags. It doesn’t make you a better person or more worthy. It just means you don’t value expensive handbags. That’s IT. What a bunch of sanctimonious harpies.
