Everyday bag for under £2k

buckingmad · 29/01/2024 00:48

It’s my 30th and I’d like a nice everyday bag. Thinking something along the lines of a Mulberry Lily in brown or black with gold hardware but open to other suggestions. I want something classic and easy to throw on as often rushing around after young children! Big enough to put my phone, keys and a lipstick/small perfume.

Suggestions please!

It's still obscene to spend that on a handbag.

I can afford one. I won't have one though. Or a pricey car, or expensive jewellery or any other status symbol that's a lavish waste of money purely for ego.

Buy a good quality bag and give the rest of the money to charity. I'm not saying do without, I'm saying that spending that kind of money on a complete frivolity is pretty tasteless when people are struggling to eat.

Or get one made by a local leather worker. It will still cost less, provide local employment and be unique.

Imagine how that money could help a woman fleeing domestic violence.

Set up a charity direct debit and spend sometime imagining the good it's doing.

Share your privilege. In the long run, it will be a much more meaningful gift to yourself. Far better for the soul than a trinket.

And BINGO there it is the give it to charity post 🙄

So I presume you drive a banger of a car, don't go to nice restaurants or holidays, or replace anything in your house. After all that's money that could be donated to a charity.

People don't criticise posters for going on cruises or fancy holidays yet mention a handbag and & its a different story

The OP isn't asking whether she should buy it she's quite rightly decided to treat herself.

You carry on donating to your hearts content just don't let your halo choke you & leave the OP to spend her money her way

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 31/01/2024 06:20

@RausageSoul the smaller Lily isn't too heavy if you don't over fill it. I have it in red and I use it as an evening bag. They are timeless, but definitely not an 'everyday' bag.

UtterlyButterly2048 · 31/01/2024 06:41

MN HQ actually posted on this thread asking people who didn’t agree to stop commenting. And yet still they come. Sanctimonious, judgemental clap trap and the assumption that buying expensive things and giving to charity are mutually exclusive merely shows their own prejudice.
Labelling people as “silly” for spending their own money how they see fit is a you problem, not a problem with anyone else.
I bloody love a good handbag and I’ve been buying them for more than 20 years. I still use all of them, they are classics (to me!) and they bring me massive amounts of happiness. I have however never had a Mulberry and I entirely blame this thread for the fact I’ve just ordered an Alexa, in a happy, sunny shade of Yellow 😊

notthatthis · 31/01/2024 06:55

Checkout Loro Piana.

Maireas · 31/01/2024 07:14

"complete frivolity" @Panterus ?
I think your misogyny is showing.
Women have handbags. Women carry more than men, day to day.
It's an essential. Plus - how do you know how much the OP gives to charity?

Maireas · 31/01/2024 07:17

When I got a promotion in 1994 I went to John Lewis and treated myself to a Mulberry bag. It was very pricey, but I've used it on and off ever since. If you buy quality, it will definitely be an investment.
Oh, and I also give to charity....

sausagepastapot · 31/01/2024 07:45

I have two Lily's and neither are full on day bags IMO. They are cute for quick trips out or evenings out but not really useful! My never full is amazing as a day bag and I love my Pochette Metis as its cross body and roomier than it looks.

I have bought 5 designer bags in the last 7 years and zero cheap other ones. They all look as perfect as the day I bought them and have increased dramatically in value...just sayin'! I used to buy several cheap bags a year- wont need another bag for years to come as the designer ones I have bought are incredible quality and I take care of them.

Comedycook · 31/01/2024 07:59

Such a funny thread.

Fwiw...some bags end up going up in value. I bought my LV never full years ago...I think it's worth more now than I paid for it.

I don't think the op is unreasonable...her money and if she can afford it, why not. What I do find absolutely hilarious is the attitude of some posters almost suggesting she will struggle to find something for that amount. I promise you that you can buy a handbag for less than 2k!

Exactly. People who try to suggest those who buy high priced bags are somehow fools seem to have no idea how well they last. It's not all about branding. They in the whole are exceptionally well made using top quality materials and last years. Decades not just a few years. They are handed down to next generations or if sold can fetch more than they cost.

They are the sustainable choice. Cheap pleather/PVC or low grade leather bags do not last decades. They are binned.

Well when j made the thread I was not expecting 10 pages 😂

Thank you for the suggestions and birthday wishes! I’m really looking forward to trying a few on. I’ve got a mulberry shop in town and our fenwicks has one of those handbag clinic second hand shops so going to have a look there at the weekend!

Will come back with photos!

Happy birthday shopping Op! I’m off to selfridges today to meet a friend. I absolutely will not definitely will be looking at bags!

can anyone recommend a pre loved online store please?

stealthbanana · 31/01/2024 08:34

Vestiaire (of course) but shop only from the uk or you get brexity extra charges applied, it’s annoying. Hardly ever worn it. And designer exchange and xupes (both of whom advertise on HEWI/vestiaire) are both good.

UtterlyButterly2048 · 31/01/2024 08:35

@WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout Rich Diamonds have some absolute corkers. Definitely the pricier end though - I’d love the Hermes Kelly but at £23k it’s not gonna happen 🤣🤣🤣

Oilyoilyoilgob · 31/01/2024 08:37

Happy birthday shopping @buckingmad i would love to see some pictures, you could whittle your choices down in an online poll 😄

I’m amazed at the number of people who have come on saying we should never buy luxury goods and every single spare penny should go to charity. I hope these people never partake in frivolities like extra special ranges at the supermarket, meals out, anything other than a mobile that calls and texts. No holidays. No pets. Hopefully they all live on bread and water to ensure every single spare penny they have goes to charity!

Individually and as a couple we enjoy spending, especially on good meals out and holidays. With bags they can last years. We also donate to charity. It’s not either/or!

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 31/01/2024 08:39

Excellent thank you

I know someone who has a limited edition Hermes - think £40,000 or thereabouts! But she’s married to an arse so I suppose handbag is compensation! She’ll never leave him as she lose access to dcs - they are in Middle East.

BodenCardiganNot · 31/01/2024 08:54

DD is starting her first proper job in October when she graduates from Uni. I am going to buy her a bag - and shoot me now, I'm going to spend up to 2k!

MokaEfti · 31/01/2024 09:12

@WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout there is also this website for pre-loved designer:

luxecollectivefashion.com/collections/bags?_kx=4UO0yDofWb-D5vNoiNe2h6SyafokuAhlfWJzNgsdwH0%3D.RbHpBz

I've not shopped from there, but got to know of them via a link from a reputable website. And then a few months later, they showed up on Dragons Den! I think it was the latest series actually. Spoiler alert - they got funding!

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 31/01/2024 09:18

Oh gosh I remember them now!

flusterbluff · 31/01/2024 09:28

@Panterus unless you live a life of extreme austerity giving away all your disposable money to worthy causes you really are not in a position to preach. If you do anything other than eat the cheapest food. Lentils and chickpeas, do not travel for pleasure ever and have a wardrobe limited to practical essentials only to be replaced when worn out then really, you need to sort your own indulgences before preaching to others.

Checkout Loro Piana.

The OP won't find anything but a wallet under £2000 in Loro Piana. Saying that I would rather spend more for a Loro Piana bag than to buy a Mulberry one but I am older than the OP and I like more classic bags.

Bonhams auction house has a regular online sale of pre-loved designer bags. You can get some absolute bargains in tip top condition.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 31/01/2024 09:38

Lovely thank you everyone
not that I need any more bags.

i still regret getting rid of quite a few a few years back when we were strapped for cash. Big regret but was needed at the time. Should have saved them for my dds.

I have a Kelly that I bought about 15 years ago for yes a lot of money but nothing like what they go for today. I bought it with my first ever bonus, pre kids and mortgage!

The trouble is that they are now so expensive I never wear it out of fear that I’ll get mugged or look ostentatious.

It’s the only bag that I regularly consider selling. But as I said upthread, teenage daughter forbids me selling it.

As a PP pointed out @Panterus has a phone or computer along with internet access. Could it be a necessity? Maybe? But they're happily wasting their time on Mumsnet, I'm sure they could be working extra hours to donate more money to charity or could be volunteering somewhere instead.
