Immature for a 40yr old?

NoOrdinaryMorning · 28/01/2024 23:35

This is my first ever thread on Mumsnet so forgive me if I've done this wrong.
Not very exciting I know but I've been trying to find a nice cardigan that would cut it warmth-wise from now right up until late summer nights on holiday. I really like the colours on this but I'm 40 now! I can't help thinking that it'd be better suited to a pretty 20-something?! Also it looks very similar to one belonging to my DC Grin
I don't really trust my own judgement anymore after years in an abusive relationship. Those of you 40+, would you wear it?

Don't get it. Go for something one colour and more neutral.

mynameiscalypso · 28/01/2024 23:38

I'm 40. I wouldn't buy it myself because I don't think the colours would suit me, especially that orange/peach tone. But if it were in different shades, absolutely. I don't think it looks "young" (whatever that means) at all.

CaptainPickles · 28/01/2024 23:39

if you like it then wear it, ive been in high vis gear and to add an extra layer even worn my dressing gown ontop to keep warm with the cold weather, i may have looked omg, but i liked it and was warm.

TeabySea · 28/01/2024 23:40

I'm not keen on the pastel but if it was more vibrant Id wear it.
I'm mid 50s and don't give a shit whether something is supposedly age appropriate: if I like it, that's enough for me.

The colours would suit me as I'm very fair and would suit what I usually wear. I just thought it had a teenage look to it. Perhaps I'm imagining that
Thanks

Go for it then @NoOrdinaryMorning!

Blazingunicorns · 28/01/2024 23:44

Why are you worrying so much what other people think? If you like it, get it. I’m 44 and would wear this.
Stuff other people’s opinions!

bradpittsbathwater · 28/01/2024 23:45

If it suits you go for it. I don't think it looks too young.

purpleme12 · 28/01/2024 23:45

I love it actually.
I would definitely wear something like that
I mean I'm 38 so not 40 yet but I don't think it's immature. If it looks good on you then you should get it

BaronessBomburst · 28/01/2024 23:45

If you like it, wear it!

A total and complete lack of confidence. It was all beaten out of me

If you like it and it suits you get it

NoOrdinaryMorning · 28/01/2024 23:50

Thanks everyone.

I love it and would definitely wear it. I'm 38, so pretty close to 40

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 28/01/2024 23:51

I don't generally go in for "too old/ too young" notions but I'm 64 and I wouldn't wear that because tbh, I think it would be better suited to my mother in-law (if she were still alive).

If you like it wear it. It's certainly not "too young" for you.

SleepPrettyDarling · 28/01/2024 23:52

I’d wear it with light wash jeans and a cornflower blue t-shirt.

LondonQueen · 28/01/2024 23:52

I think it's more of an old persons outfit of choice, I'm late 20s and my friends and I all wear neutral colours.

Justifiedcheese · 28/01/2024 23:53

Wear what you like. I own several pairs of jolly dungarees and I'm 62. I don't give a flying fuck whether they are 'age appropriate', they make me feel good.

Precipice · 28/01/2024 23:53

I actually don't think that many 20-somethings are in cardies. Even less so long cardies.

Do you like it? If you like it, get it. See how it looks on you. If you like it on you, keep it. If not, send it back. That's what matters.

Clothesdonkey · 28/01/2024 23:53

I’m not keen on it. The colours and stripes are limiting what it can be worn with so it’s not a good all-rounder. Just a cream or ecru would be better.
if anything it looks older rather than younger. I don’t tend to worry about that though and I’m 50.

The striping doesn’t match up which shouts out at me. A higher end retailer/designer would have the colour matching horizontally.

MidnightMeltdown · 29/01/2024 00:01

I'm in my 30s and my first thought was that it looks like a granny cardigan. My mum would wear that, but I wouldn't.

It's more older person leaning than young imo

shillyme · 29/01/2024 00:17

@MidnightMeltdown I agree, it doesn't seem especially young at all. If OP likes it then just buy it and wear it! I can't be doing with age related rules around clothing its more to do with what suits the individual.

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 29/01/2024 00:20

I quite like it. Not my style but can see how it would look with a white tshirt. Go for it OP

Mirrormeback · 29/01/2024 00:28

No teenager would wear that cardi so go for it

BasiliskStare · 29/01/2024 00:35

Those colours are not mine but that aside @NoOrdinaryMorning I would wear it if (my favourite ) navy blue. Sounds boring but for what you have described it for I absolutely think it will do the job.

If you like it I would buy it and wear it and like the colours - I would definitely go for it. I suspect over time you will wear it a lot and get many compliments.
