Immature for a 40yr old?

This is my first ever thread on Mumsnet so forgive me if I've done this wrong.
Not very exciting I know but I've been trying to find a nice cardigan that would cut it warmth-wise from now right up until late summer nights on holiday. I really like the colours on this but I'm 40 now! I can't help thinking that it'd be better suited to a pretty 20-something?! Also it looks very similar to one belonging to my DC Grin
I don't really trust my own judgement anymore after years in an abusive relationship. Those of you 40+, would you wear it?

Incredibly overpriced suggestions and obscure, pointless, oneupmanship arguments about the deeper meaning of clothes are why I rarely dip into S and B these days.

There are a lot of posts where the poster is clearly looking for high street, basics, but all the responses are some hugely expensive high fashion suggestions. Again, fine on the right thread, as pp said, but does the OP strike you as wanting a £1200 Raey cardie from Matches? (No offence intended, OP. I don't want it either) I realise many of these high fashion picks be found on Vinted, but I can;t be the only one who doesn't want to sift through Vinted.

Agree with you here, someone posted dresses the other day which started at £500 - "oh but they last for ages". And??!!

I hate Vinted sifting too.

A total and complete lack of confidence. It was all beaten out of me

I am sorry OP. 💐

I like the cardigan, it reminds me of sunsets/sunrises with those soft pastels. If you like it, wear it. Ignore the people who say they don't like it, everyone has different tastes, and bank balances! Nothing I own is expensive, but I've always found TU clothing to be nice quality.

I agree with you - who the heck is suggesting hundreds or thousands for clothes? Shouldn't they be on weddingbee where they spend their time bitching about who has a bigger diamond?

do you like this, OP? I bought it just before Christmas and it’s a similar vibe. I’ve worn it over a white crew neck tee with wide legged blue jeans, but it could be worn as a v-neck with just a cami or bra under it so maybe more versatile.

This one is lovely. The one you've picked OP is more for an older person than a younger one, I think? Though if you love it buy it!

Lovemusic82 · 30/01/2024 16:31

When I turned 40 I stopped caring what others think. I wear bright colours. I like the cardigan, buy it if you like it 😁

Lovemusic82 · 30/01/2024 16:34

I don’t like the Oliver Bonas one, looks like a fruit salad sweet to me. Which is fine if you like that look but not for me.

Yes. Even some of the outfits I see out now (cropped slogan tshirts/tops, low cut long sleeved bodysuits, which I see as more late 80s/early 90s), I see it's 1981 - not sure about market stalls as can't think I went to market stalls in 1981

I knew all about market stall clothes because I grew up with family having a stall and remember trying to be persuaded by mother and aunts to shop at the market instead of wasting my days and money in Top Shop (missed the Oxford street store with its ownDJ) or Richard Shop or buying designer stuff (which is now worth more than I paid for it. Biba and a few designers from their early days)
I have visions of those badly made cardigans and jumpers, mass produced in non natural materials.
The patterns and designs posters are posting are bringing back bad memory’s
Then I saw the price tags

Honestly I think designers have run out of ideas or found several warehouses of clothing destined for the market stalls of Great Britain in 1981 and decided that a change of label and an eye watering price tag and they can pass it off as designer.

My issue with going into a boutique to ask what suits is it may put pressure on op to buy something she might hate. Especially if she lacks confidence and the store owner is doing the hard sell

I think going by herself initially to use the changing rooms in stores to try on a variety of stuff to see what colour and styles suit her is the first step.

M103 · 01/02/2024 08:05

I like it and I am 40+. Like others said, buy whatever you like, don't worry about what others say! But this cardigan looks more old than young to me, something mil would buy as a present for me.

cherish123 · 01/02/2024 21:11

I am 45 and wouldn't wear it. It's more of an older person's cardigan.
