Immature for a 40yr old?

NoOrdinaryMorning · 28/01/2024 23:35

This is my first ever thread on Mumsnet so forgive me if I've done this wrong.
Not very exciting I know but I've been trying to find a nice cardigan that would cut it warmth-wise from now right up until late summer nights on holiday. I really like the colours on this but I'm 40 now! I can't help thinking that it'd be better suited to a pretty 20-something?! Also it looks very similar to one belonging to my DC Grin
I don't really trust my own judgement anymore after years in an abusive relationship. Those of you 40+, would you wear it?

39 here and generally no I wouldn't, I love the colours in it though, you could dress it up with greys and blacks and it would look pretty good.... I think anything can look classy depending on what you wear it with.

BingoMarieHeeler · 29/01/2024 15:45

Oh wow no that’s definitely suitable for a 40+ person. It’s nice! But not cool.

Incredibly overpriced suggestions and obscure, pointless, oneupmanship arguments about the deeper meaning of clothes are why I rarely dip into S and B these days.

There are a lot of posts where the poster is clearly looking for high street, basics, but all the responses are some hugely expensive high fashion suggestions. Again, fine on the right thread, as pp said, but does the OP strike you as wanting a £1200 Raey cardie from Matches? (No offence intended, OP. I don't want it either) I realise many of these high fashion picks be found on Vinted, but I can;t be the only one who doesn't want to sift through Vinted.

I wasn't posting as suggestions as such but examples that long cardigans aren't "dated"

hangingonfordearlife1 · 29/01/2024 15:50

it's a cardigan. cardigans are for older ladies imo

OriginalUsername2 · 29/01/2024 15:56

If you saw it and thought “I love that!” then get it. That’s all the information you need.

That'll be why H& M, or indeed Sezanne or Cos, stock them then?

Long, cheap, not dated cardigans.

It's just the general tone of S and B these days @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle. I can't be the only one who has noticed the faintly patronising tone of not just this thread, but many threads. That's the way S and B reads to me these days, anyway.

I am waiting for the OP to be told to try Co, not Cos.

WHAT!? noooo!! I love cardigans!! I'm only 39!!

Kwam31 · 29/01/2024 16:58

@NoOrdinaryMorning
I'm 50, I spent my life wearing clothes that were plain as I lacked confidence , I've now realised that life is far to short to worry what anyone thinks & have been buying whatever I like now (with young 20s DDs advice) and it's great, my wardrobe is full of colour and patterns and definetely much more on trend.
The linked asos one is lovely too.

Kwam31 · 29/01/2024 17:00

@hangingonfordearlife1
Old ladies? I wonder why boohoo has 500+ available??

Moonshine5 · 29/01/2024 17:02

Honestly I don't look at it and think "teen" (quite the opposite), so you don't need to worry on that front.

Aroundthewaygirl · 29/01/2024 17:28

I don't really see a young person wearing this, but it is cute.

Ginmonkeyagain · 29/01/2024 19:01

OP if you love colours just own it! I am 45 and am currently wearing bright pink cord trousers. You will look amazing.

do you like this, OP? I bought it just before Christmas and it’s a similar vibe. I’ve worn it over a white crew neck tee with wide legged blue jeans, but it could be worn as a v-neck with just a cami or bra under it so maybe more versatile.

This is cute and fun!! Still age appropriate and not too young- I think it would suit all age groups depending how it was styled.

Blazingunicorns · 29/01/2024 21:28

OMG who cares what’s ‘in fashion’ and what’s ‘out of fashion’! If you like something then wear it! Why be dictated to about what you should wear by someone else’s ideas- get some individuality!

NoOrdinaryMorning · 28/01/2024 23:49

A total and complete lack of confidence. It was all beaten out of me

😢
Do you have any nice little local clothing stores or boutiques near you? Would you pop into one of those and have a look at what they have and maybe ask for some advice on what might suit you?

Actually wouldn’t do this (from experience) . Either they just want to get you to spend money and they end up trying to sell you stuff you would never wear or they make you feel uncomfortable till you leave.

Yalta · 30/01/2024 08:21

Does anyone of a certain age look at what passes for the latest fashion and think it is reminiscent of what you found on market stalls in 1981
Except it is being sold in shops with an eye watering price on it.

Even the Vogue outfits pictured on here, I think I have something very similar I bought in the 80s. Except the red jacket I teamed with a black mini and think it looked better than the brown

TheOGCCL · 30/01/2024 09:10

I wouldn't wear that but it's got nothing to do with my age. The colours, shape and length would do nothing for me and it wouldn't go with anything in my wardrobe.

It's sad to hear you have lost confidence in your choices but I think as we get older you do have to listen to yourself and decide what you want to wear. Not only should you know yourself better and what does and doesn't work, following 'what's allowed' can make 40+ women blend into the background. I think that's one of the benefits of age really, learning to suit yourself.

Yes. Even some of the outfits I see out now (cropped slogan tshirts/tops, low cut long sleeved bodysuits, which I see as more late 80s/early 90s), I see it's 1981 - not sure about market stalls as can't think I went to market stalls in 1981.

Depends on the boutique. There are 2 locally to me. One I've bought items from but she has a specific style (she now designs and sells her own clothes too) and some items are great for me, some not so. The other one, sells a generic range but occasionally has some real gems - 2 dresses I wore a lot last summer is from there, nice jeans, jumper a friend bought from there is great. One of the dresses I had to take in though as it was very big.

I thought MN hated Oliver Bonas? I like that (don't need another cardi) - one of theirs from last year is one I really like and wore a lot so far:-

I don't know. But I've heard it said here before on S&B. Not a lot but definitely heard it. Things like "oh you can spot them a mile off". I like them.
