Immature for a 40yr old?

NoOrdinaryMorning · 28/01/2024 23:35

This is my first ever thread on Mumsnet so forgive me if I've done this wrong.
Not very exciting I know but I've been trying to find a nice cardigan that would cut it warmth-wise from now right up until late summer nights on holiday. I really like the colours on this but I'm 40 now! I can't help thinking that it'd be better suited to a pretty 20-something?! Also it looks very similar to one belonging to my DC Grin
I don't really trust my own judgement anymore after years in an abusive relationship. Those of you 40+, would you wear it?

If you like it OP then go for it. I'm 64 and couldn't care less what people think of my clothes. We are long past the days of age appropriate clothing surely, and should be wearing what is comfortable and makes us feel happy.

chatw0o0 · 29/01/2024 02:02

I really like it - not my usual colours but even so.
Where's it from? 😀

Mumoftwo1312 · 29/01/2024 02:11

I like it but I don't think it looks particularly young - I think it looks like something a flustered mum would throw on to do the nursery run, together with messy hair and food-stained leggings. (I mean that in the best possible way, that is what I look like most weekdays). I have a couple of cardigans just like it tbh

misssunshine4040 · 29/01/2024 02:22

Cardigans of all lengths, sizes and colours are in.
You are absolutely not too old to wear anything at all. Never
It's all about whether it suits your personality/body shape and how it makes you feel.
You are not old, wear whatever you like 🥰

nzeire · 29/01/2024 02:28

It’s gorgeous! Granny chic!

Nttttt · 29/01/2024 02:36

Early 30s here, I think this is much more suited to someone a lot older to you. But if you love it you should get it!!!!!

Eminybob · 29/01/2024 03:10

I think it's really frumpy. Maybe a young hipster could make it look young and hip, but I think otherwise it'll age you.

Wictc · 29/01/2024 05:17

I agree, definitely more something my mum would wear and she’s in her late 60s.

DominiqueBernard · 29/01/2024 05:52

I think long cardigans are typically worn by older women. Wear whatever you want, OP.

Sofabum · 29/01/2024 05:55

I think the opposite. I'm 40 and it's exactly the type of thing my mother in law would buy who has just turned 70.

MissMoan · 29/01/2024 06:00

I'm in my 40's and would absolutely wear this. The colours are gorgeous.

lordloveadog · 29/01/2024 06:17

Not my colours, but if they suit you and you would enjoy wearing it, then wear it and enjoy yourself.

PaulCostinRIP · 29/01/2024 06:24

I'm old and the cardigan looks like something an even older woman would wear.

Aixellency · 29/01/2024 06:25

I’m afraid I think it’s vile. And so would my mother, who’s 90 …

@NoOrdinaryMorning I’m certain you could find something more stylish and versatile. Where is it from (can’t read label) and what is it made of? It does give the impression of being very cheap - there are nicer cardigans available.

Wow there's some really nasty responses on this thread. I wasn't expecting that

I'd wear it, if it was my colour. I'm 42.

Wow there was no need for that. That was just bitchy.

Not the greatest fibre content, but this is nicely styled:

Ha! That's definitely not what I'm looking for.

This is definitely incorrect. Longer cardigans are all over the shops at the moment

OP posts:
Aixellency · 29/01/2024 06:40

How is it ‘bitchy’? You asked for opinions. For goodness sake, it’s a cardigan on a website - you don’t need to defend it with your life!

Whatever anyone wears in real life, someone else might have a positive or negative opinion on it - which they probably won’t voice. S&B is where people can read some of those opinions - not directed at you but at a random item of clothing on a website.

If I passed you in a corridor or saw you in a restaurant I would still dislike the cardigan, but I obviously wouldn’t say so.

I don’t quite understand what you were expecting?

I'm 40 and I'd wear it. Go for it OP

Aixellency · 29/01/2024 07:01

Furthermore (… Grin) if you’d taken a breath before coming at me, @NoOrdinaryMorning, you might have realised that I was responding to all the posts implying that anything considered unstylish or ugly would be suitable for an elderly woman. It’s a common MN trope. And offensive. My mother is 90. She likes beautiful clothes. She would not like a lilac and cream coloured acrylic cardigan. I’m sorry if that’s unbearable to hear.
