Lovers of Parisian style and fashion with a conscious mindset and lots of chatter in between.

Previous thread

(I've removed the usual links to recommended shops and other places guides from the OP because I suspect they're getting very out of date at this point)

I am out of the room although I should probably have stayed longer as I'm still wired, but also a bit dopey as I had to take Kalms to get to sleep last night, never mind. (This is also the type of day when I get into fights on Mumsnet so watch out.) Hope you're feeling better quirky.

I'm also a day behind again, sorry. My fave from Day 18 was the necklace under just one half of the collar. I always like trends that don't involve buying more stuff, just wearing what you've already got differently.

quirkychick · 19/12/2023 13:23

I am feeling better, thank you everyone. No, I didn't notice the lack of clothes in the zen den, as I was feeling very foggy.

I did watch the BBC Imagine about Manchester's Factory building/artspace which featured an exhibition by Yasoi Kusama Complete with Infinity Rooms, when it was opening.

botemp · 20/12/2023 08:05

Yayoi Kusama was an answer on University Challenge last night. I think it even had to do with that Manchester exhibition. There is a lot of concern around her though, she's mentally ill and lives in a mental institution (and it is likely a huge part of her art, visualising the things only she sees and bringing them into reality). There's some who say her family/agent is exploiting her, especially in the use of her image to market Louis Vuitton. They had huge sculptures of her on LV buildings and an odd animatronic version in store windows, earlier this year and the latter was somewhat disturbing to a degree and there really wasn't a connection to her art there. I definitely get the criticism, but I have no idea how competent she is or isn't to make decisions.

bo, if that's true about Yayoi Kusama, that's really sad if she's being taken advantage of.

Thank you for the recommendation of Transatlantic. I really like that they speak some French and German as well as English. Dd1 and I were a bit disappointed with All the Light They Cannot See, as they didn't.

microbius · 20/12/2023 15:43

bo, thank you you for posting the calendar pics. I don't respond, but I appreciate them. It's hard to respond in words, probably would be better in pictures?

On another thread, you mention that you now increasingly only buy things that are vintage high fashion, which you missed years ago. If you are ever bored this Christmas, would be very interesting to see what you consider best high fashion moments / garments (I would imagine Celine/Philo bags are there). [I would never buy them, solely for educational purposes]. Equally, if anyone else operates a list of bests ever, would be great to see.

botemp · 20/12/2023 16:47

quirky I really haven't looked into it properly, it's mostly speculation with a sprinkling of virtue signalling afaict. Combined with differing cultural attitudes WRT mental health in Japan it's hard to really gage what's going on. But just in case, if I'm ever famous and in a mental institution, I don't agree to animatronic versions of me as window displays.

Micro, eh, I'm really not a fan of best ever/top ten lists etc in general but in fashion especially it just feels antithetical. It's all about being open to the next new thing to completely upend what's come before it or blow the original concept out of the water. Something is good within its contextual moment but that can get better or worse in the next moment. Pinning it down just doesn't feel right.

WRT my personal shopping habits in extension of that. I essentially live in a fashion wasteland, it's only been the last ten or so years that we have access locally to decent brands in well curated boutiques. Before that you had to travel, luxury had an aversion to being online fearing it would undermine their business model. And while I've travelled plenty you only see so much when you're there so there's still a lot to discover from what I've missed out on. It may not be new, but it's new to me in that sense.

Getting back to Transatlantic, glad you enjoyed it, I was taken with it too, I had anticipated it being a bit bleak with some moment of levity but it was rather the opposite.

Has anyone seen A Small Light, somewhat in the same theme? It's on Disney+ so I'll either have to sign up or illegally download it magically find it somewhere. I initially thought it was the show you mentioned quirky but that looks to be a Netflix show.

quirkychick · 20/12/2023 17:41

I haven't seen all of Transatlantic yet, bo but I loved the dress with the lips, especially as they are helping Surrealists! All the Light We Cannot See has German actors playing Germans, but English and American actors playing French, but I imagine it's because it's for an American Market.

botemp · 21/12/2023 08:55

Oh that's weird, although it's usually the ones who get everything dubbed (like Germans and French) who dislike having to watch anything with subtitles, Americans tend to be less bothered about it than everyone seems to assume.

Day 21

ShangPie · 21/12/2023 10:35

Love the contrast between the soft curves and the striped stockings in the middle pic.

Also those pink shoes are bonkers! They remind me of old pics of ladies with their hair in curlers

Thanks again bo for these daily treats

Redandblue11 · 21/12/2023 12:34

I am still here looking at the lovely daily calendar treats!
Loved day 20 in the sense that has an ease to it.
And the bow shoes of today!

I am quiet as having a family holiday down south, proper south.

Papyrophile · 21/12/2023 12:48

And I am quiet because we have DM for the holidays! Thanks for the pictures and wishing you all a very merry Christmas x

quirkychick · 21/12/2023 17:30

bo, I just meant it's more appealing if there are known names to an American Market to sell a series.

botemp · 22/12/2023 07:39

Ah, yes, that makes more sense quirky.

That teddy bear hat!! Scathing commentary on the use of fur in fashion, or just very very silly?

botemp · 22/12/2023 13:04

It's Moschino Shangpie, so more likely just embracing the silliness that is fashion sometimes.

Red is 'proper south', almost can see France south or south as in home of delicious empanadas? Enjoy yourself either way.

Floisme · 22/12/2023 14:43

I think I like the necklace even more than the hat. I knew we shouldn't have got rid of all those free, plastic toys.

quirkychick · 22/12/2023 17:35

flo, it could be made from Kinder egg or party bags easily.

mm47 · 22/12/2023 17:42

I like the middle top photo, can’t remember who did this - was it Prada? I think it was supposed to highlight how women undertake many different roles so are constantly multitasking but it looked so fantastic, it was unrealistic - and yet wonderful at the same time.

Floisme · 22/12/2023 18:33

Unfortunately Kinder eggs and party bags just aren't my world at the moment quirky - the youngest family member is 21 (It makes Christmas much easier but not half as much fun Sad).

quirkychick · 22/12/2023 20:23

They're not mine, anymore either. Both are teens, now. But at one point there was a lot of plastic tat!

botemp · 22/12/2023 20:42

I'm sure MNHQ would allow you a begging thread for plastic tat, Flo, I'm sure there'd be loads of people happy to donate.

Proper south as in the home of delicious empanadas. But as I am in the proper south of my country (Patagonia) empanadas are not the highlight here.
From a fashion front I have an eye on a proper gaucho boina, might end up getting one in a proper country shop, those made for working purposes.

Redandblue11 · 23/12/2023 01:41

Boina is a type of beret here.
