Lovers of Parisian style and fashion with a conscious mindset and lots of chatter in between.

And.... I have just registered with Christie's for the live auction this afternoon. No I am not going to bid - I'm not completely insane - but I fancied watching some of it. I'd assumed it would be live-streamed somewhere but couldn't see any sign of that so this seemed the only way.

Redandblue11 · 25/06/2024 11:08

oh what a treat the Dries video. I would wear so much of it. Off to see if I can find more jewels from him secondhand.

I am now obsessed with VW and I am working and trying to clear my calendar to see the auction. Maybe I will book an extended lunch with Client or something.

Redandblue11 · 25/06/2024 11:08

Disney and DvF 😳

Redandblue11 · 25/06/2024 14:35

Are you that bidder at the end of the phone Flo trying to snap the dress for 26K?

botemp · 26/06/2024 09:00

Did you get the dress Flo? While I can't boast that I made it to see VW, I did randomly have an up close encounter with Simone Rocha's couture collection for Jean Paul Gaultier yesterday. No security whatsoever, were I an immoral person I could have fondled it to my delight. (And clearly someone before me had fondled and caused some damage 🤬)

There's lots of little details on it that I had missed in the show coverage.

Ha ha I was late and literally logged in just in time to see that dress go!

I also missed the the time travelling dandy suit bidding but it looks as if it went for 15K.

It was interesting how some bids went through the roof while a few (admitedly not many) pieces stayed close to the estimated price, e.g. that corduroy trouser suit that you picked out Red, even though they said it was one of her personal favourites.

I must admit I was rooting for the bidders in places like Pudsey and Glossop but I don't know if they got anything.

So what were you doing at a couture collection bo? Sounds like a good story if it's not too outing.

botemp · 26/06/2024 11:29

It's not outing at all Flo, although maybe I should pretend it's all mysterious super connections 🤔 quick stopover in Paris, melting into a puddle and having another trousers crisis but I really do think I need to stick with the head over brains with this one as it's still quite expensive in the sale and mostly polyester.

Anyhow, the couture is just randomly on display in Dover Street Market, I guess they've not got much else to do with it after the show but I'm grateful to just have been able to see it. Didn't see much of DSM as I was hangry but I'll try to swing by again before we move on to see what else they're hiding.

Those are some impressive dresses bo, specially the one with the sliver of white corset at the back.
now that the heatwave is here I also find myself wanting better summer cool clothes…

Floisme · 04/07/2024 10:54

I've only just got round to watching that Dries video, thanks for posting it bo.
Mr Flo wandered in halfway through that monologue at the beginning and said 'WTF is this?' which did kind of break the spell. Nevertheless very beautiful and an almost perfect mix of uplifting and melancholic. And now I want one of those long, swishy coats.

Speaking of coats, I enjoyed this interlude with Fran Lebovitz a couple of days ago. It's not really about clothes but I've always liked her style, even though I don't think I could commit to it as wholeheartedly as she has.

I particularly liked:
''I find any food preparation to be immensely tedious. But, of course, I love to eat.''
I must find out where she's speaking in the autumn.

Also thought this was quite interesting about M&S launching an alterations and repairs service. I'm not sure I see the point of sending something off to have a zip replaced - I'd rather pay a local alterations service if I couldn't do it myself. But if they extend it to altering some of their vintage St Michael stuff to fit, then I'll be watching.

Fran Lebowitz: ‘I am very angry. I’m angry almost all the time’

botemp · 04/07/2024 16:52

Oh, no, I thought Mr Flo was more open minded than that 😲

Fran L is over in Amsterdam in October or November too, I looked at the tickets and was a bit shocked by what I was asked to pay for the crap seats still left. Almost seems worth it to fly over to Dublin for it considering their prices 🧐

I'm on the fence about the usefulness of in-store alterations. H&M trialed it a few years ago and seeing as it's gone now I assume it wasn't a runaway success. I prefer the French approach where everyone can just declare costs (I think in their taxes or with the municipality) and get reimbursed for X number of repairs per year. Even if you do it yourself, you get a reimbursement which kind of leaves it open to abuse but I assume they've made allowance for that. Although knowing the French bureaucracy's love of paperwork and confusing procedures that's probably enough of a deterrent...

Anyhow, altering to fit would be an asset but as I've learned is kind of a rare skill set among tailors/seamstresses. Not sure how viable it would be to have one of those on staff in enough places for M&S.

Talk of swishy coats is making me sad though, found the most beautiful Yohji Yamamoto coat in Paris and was all loved up but it was just a bit tight on the arms and being told by the eager salesman it was from the 1990 runway show didn't help with visions of accidentally tearing the precious rare piece to bits with one wrong move. I have faint hopes of daily swimming and a Mediterranean diet slimming down my arms enough for the coat to fit on the way back but I sincerely doubt it.

Adding some pics of what I missed the first time at Dover Street Market in Paris. No idea who made it though, felt a bit Project Runway unconventional material challenge with pins and spoons. They also have two art spaces, one was very crap, the other had interesting fashion photography but I suspect they'll struggle to have a continually interesting program for those.

I am not following the conversation … Fran L and Dublin …

Floisme · 05/07/2024 09:18

Sorry Red, Fran Lebowitz is doing a speaking tour - one of those 'An Evening With....' events around Europe, including London, Amsterdam and Dublin. She can be very funny (at least she is in small doses, I do wonder how much I'd enjoy a whole evening in her company.)

She also has a signature style that I've never seen her stray from: jeans, mannish jacket, overcoat - all very expensive if not bespoke.

There's a documentary which I've not actually seen but I think is still on Netflix where, from the sound of things, she wanders around New York looking splendid.

A bit more here:

An Ode to Fran Lebowitz’s Style—Which She Would Totally Hate

The author and humorist is a caricature of a New Yorker in her acerbic wit, humor, and effortlessly cool approach to fashion.

botemp · 05/07/2024 09:19

Oh sorry, Red, Fran L is Fran Lebowitz, article is linked in Flo's comment. She's an author (of sorts, there's a Netflix show, have a watch, well worth it) and doing a tour for her latest book that Flo mentioned wanting to go see and I clicked on the UK dates out of curiosity which for whatever reason also includes Dublin.

It was a bit surprising to me how much cheaper the seats are for Dublin than Amsterdam (that I'd checked previously and had sticker shock over). It's pretty steep for a book tour thing, but it's much more than your usual book tour chat, so I'm not questioning the charging of steep ticket prices, more the difference in prices from one venue to the next. Maybe her sardonic style isn't as popular in Dublin, though I'd find that hard to believe 🤷

Redandblue11 · 05/07/2024 10:28

Oh, thank you both.
Mmm and I have been going to Dublin quite a bit … not sure if I will carry on going after October …
I think Nov she is in Dublin, isn’t it.
to start with I will have a watch to Netflix.

After all that VW occasion, I became obsessed with her clothes, much more interested in them. And I quite like the stuff with Andreas K label too.

Floisme · 05/07/2024 10:56

I'm also still thinking about that VW exhibition a lot Red, and about that quote of hers about having a more interesting life if you wear impressive clothes. I'm so glad I forked out for the catalogue, even though I thought the price was outrageous at time, because the photos remind me of the day.

Redandblue11 · 05/07/2024 11:16

I have just re-read my post and my grammar is😱
I am sure you all know what I mean 🙄

botemp · 05/07/2024 11:37

We didn't until you pointed it out Red 🙈 honestly don't worry about your English just pretend you're an idiot like me and leave the horrible SPAG visible for all to see.

Trigger warning for those who hate when politics is mentioned here, it's about clothes anyhow. I was admiring Akshata Murty kurti in the background of Sunak signing off (accessorised with an umbrella Confused). My internet sleuthing skills have revealed it's from this Indian brand, no longer available in that colour way but it makes for inspiring browsing for those of us looking at our summer wardrobes askance.

Gosh - those Ka -Sha have beautiful designs. I love they way they mix and match and really love an edgy boot! Is it slightly reminicent of Dries Van Noten?

The layers of unexpected pattern and colour that somehow, magically works.

Floisme · 06/07/2024 09:34

They're beautiful, thanks for the link, I must remember to come back and look more closely.
I converted a couple of the prices into £s and, while expensive, they weren't as wild as I'd feared although, if you put a few pieces together, it would soon add up and I'm not sure how well they'd work on their own.

I find that dyes from India do not suit me. I cannot figure out what the factor is. My base skin colour does not work .

For instance blue really suits me. But if I try the Indian blues they look terrible. They look stunning on my sister in law though, who is Indian.

Redandblue11 · 07/07/2024 16:19

In theory I should like the dress. But I don’t.
i really don’t like it (promise is not influenced by political views)

Papyrophile · 07/07/2024 16:22

I just don't like the neckline. The version with a scoop/V neck is better. I still wouldn't buy it though. And certainly not in red, white and blue. It was a political message dress.

botemp · 08/07/2024 08:54

Well these two probably focus grouped the hell out of their wardrobe choices and political messaging to the point I'm wondering if they knew it would be photographed exactly like this 🤔 (And speaking of odd props, I know it's not, but it looks like he's holding a champagne flute Confused)

I'm attempting to stay out of further discussion on AM's dress, I liked it, I think it helped I first saw her wear it while walking with the dress in motion and smiling at someone in greeting and not while she was doing her best school girl pose behind her husband. I find the reactions a bit odd, I totally accept it's a marmite dress but there's a lot of veiled comments that reveal a lot about some people's attitudes rather than being legitimate critiques of the dress. (And for the absence of doubt, I'd struggle to vote for any party in the UK system but definitely wouldn't vote conservative).

As I don't want any bin fires to spread to this thread, I will take any further thoughts about either Akshata Murty's or Victoria Starmer's dress with me to the grave.
