New thread, thanks for the brilliant title suggestion, as ever!

The Duke of Kent seemed to me to be quite frail at the last few of his public appearances, so I hope he is okay. I was thinking about him during the coronation; he is one of the few people to have attended the late queen's (where he pledged fealty) and KCIII's. He has been a real stalwart in the RF since his teen years.

Maireas · 12/11/2023 18:43

You're right, @SenecaFallsRedux . He spent a lot of time with the late Queen during her last summer at Balmoral.

Hasn't he been duke since he was about 5 or 6?

Maireas · 12/11/2023 18:51

Yes, since his father was killed in that air crash. Alexandra was very small, and Michael just a baby. Poor Marina.

At the two coronations: age 17 and 87.

Maireas · 12/11/2023 19:01

Goodness! There can't be many who attended both.

Isn't he the David Linley of his day? Son of a sibling of the monarch?

How different things are today if so.

Maireas · 12/11/2023 19:04

That's right. First cousin of QEII.

OP posts:
Maireas · 12/11/2023 19:06

Although I suppose that the Earl of Snowdon (ne Linley) is more like the Earl of Harewood, ie a cousin through a female sibling.

True. The male line difference means that the DoK is a prince of the United Kingdom and an HRH.

Brazilianadventure · 12/11/2023 19:09

So like Archie to George.

Exactly. He'll be HRH The Duke of Sussex.

Here are the other folks to attend both coronations. There may be others, but probably not many as most children would not have been invited.

Princess Alexandra, Prince Michael of Kent, Duke of Gloucester (then Prince Richard of Gloucester), and of course, Charles himself.

Thanks, @SenecaFallsRedux - quite a select group!

I do hope the Duke of Kent is OK, I’ve always admired him and his loyalty to the Queen.

KillingMeDeftly · 12/11/2023 19:49

He must be the oldest living royal now? Or perhaps that's the duchess as I think she's a couple of years older than him.

SqueakyDinosaur · 12/11/2023 19:53

IIRC she renounced her HRH quite a while back, and is just known as Katharine Kent.

KillingMeDeftly · 12/11/2023 20:26

I think technically she can't renounce it because as the wife of an HRH she is automatically one too. But she doesn't appear to use it on a day to day basis.

Bettering down hatches for Storm Debi as we are smack in the middle of a red warning. As the public gets to name the storms for U.K., ROI and the Netherlands I vote we all try and nominate Storm Maxima for the next storm season

SenecaFallsRedux · 13/11/2023 15:32

Good luck, @CliffsofMohair . Living as I do in the coastal southeastern US, I've had my share of named storms and hurricanes. Our last one was Idalia, which seemed to have as many different pronunciations as there are TV meteorologists.

Maireas · 13/11/2023 16:12

Stay safe!
I love the idea of Storm Maxima 😊
