I thought I'd do a Xmas edition of the styling threads I've done before for anyone who is interested 🎄👠

I've got some straight legged ink blue velvet jeans from last year ( I'm tall 5 11) what can I style with them

Justnoidea · 01/12/2023 18:11

Oh my goodness - what a great thread - thank you @frillseeking!

I need some help on weekend casual wardrobe inspo. Have just got my work wardrobe back on track and feel like I’ve nailed my look (wide legged wool trousers from COS and jigsaw, silk shirts and cashmere crew necks) but have lost my way with down time clothes.

Kids are 2 and 5 so I’m still in sticky fingers/muddy park territory. Can you recommend any inspo accounts to follow? I’m especially looking for top styles as basically just wear shit quality shapeless bretons atm. I’m 5’7, size 10 and 36yo if that makes a difference 🙏🏻

@CUDet couple of ideas for you. All smart/casual style and dresses you could wear dressed up or down.

Hello @frillseeking just reading through this really helpful thread - could you let me know where the dress in the third picture (the teal pattern) is from ? Thank you .

Captainobvious35 · 04/12/2023 15:29

I love this thread!! Can I please have advice on a few items I’ve recently bought and what you’d pair them with @frillseeking ?

The first is a bright orange satin slip skirt from nobody’s child, comes to about mid-calf.

Then a pair of white leather ankle boots with small block heel and pointy-ish toes, almost identical to the black Zara ones you mention upthread (but white!)

The third is a grey/black denim jacket with a leopard print fur collar. The denim jacket especially I’m struggling with as my favourite jeans are faded black/grey straight legs and the jacket is the same colour and material so I can’t wear them together. Thanks so much!

Will come back on the other posts soon!

What an amazing thread 😍

Could I please ask some advice? I’m desperate.

I’ve got a milestone birthday party on Saturday 😳 and I have been looking for something to wear for ages. I’ve tried things on but I’m just very big at the moment and nothing feels right. I’ve settled on probably wearing this season’s M&S black cotton velvet tux-style 3-piece suit (it’s at the tailors getting shortened at the mo, I’m worried that by the time I get it back all the mince pie eating I’ve been doing will make the trousers hard to do up 😅) but I would like some advice on how to accessorise it. I am thinking about trying to pull in some fun, colour and some femininity to balance the masc vibes of the suit. I think I’ll probably wear some Esska Charlie platform sandals in silver or platinum but I won’t know if they fit until they arrive later today 🤞

It doesn’t help that everything in the shops right now is massively 90s and noughties and reminds me of my youth. Nothing better than realising it’s finally time for the clothing of your teenage years to come back around as you face a milestone birthday 😂

Apple shape, no waist, chunky size 18 very short.

looking for a bag, jewellery and possibly sensible shoe options.

any advice greatly received 🤗

Mumsanetta · 05/12/2023 11:50

Hi @frillseeking, thank you so much for this thread! Can we please have some men’s winter fashion ideas as well? What would you put in a man’s capsule wardrobe?

frillseeking · 05/12/2023 14:18

@Shelaydownunderthetable I think the suit will look great and a 3 piece suit is a statement so perfect for a special occasion. I've put some ideas for you below. I definitely think you can go all out on the accessories, I'd say the blingier the better 😂 but depends on your personal taste. Let me know if there's anything you like and I'll send links.

@Shelaydownunderthetable I also liked the idea of going with a bold injection of colour like the red below and I was thinking you might be in the market to splurge and get one real statement accessory as it's a special birthday (early present to yourself?!) just some ideas for you!

@frillseeking where is that red dress from ?!

@Aria999 it's from Hobbs link. Also available on JL x

frillseeking · 05/12/2023 14:53

@MaryWhitehouseisCOOL are you thinking for every day or for a night out? If you're thinking how to dress them up, I'd go for something like the below. Either a metallic or a bright, jewelled colour would sit back well with a dark inky colour.

What a pity it's so long! I am only 5 ft 4 and with a long torso, so anything ankle length is always way too long for me.

Shelaydownunderthetable · 05/12/2023 18:37

@frillseeking Thank you so much! What a star! I love the items in the bottom right hand corner image especially - the one with the black bow? I actually have something similar to the black bow. Could you please link to the bag and the earrings? Thanks again 🙏 I also love the red shoe/bag/blingy earring combo but they might be out of my price range 😂

Love the next pussy bow blouse thanks @frillseeking

frillseeking · 05/12/2023 19:48

@Urgenthelplease gorgeous isn't it! It would also look great with black jeans or black leather trousers and could even be tucked into a skirt

OP posts:
frillseeking · 06/12/2023 10:18

@Captainobvious35 I've done a quick moodboard for the skirt as I think this is probably the trickiest one to style up. Black and cream would be the obvious choice for this time of year as it's a strong, bold colour. I like the more casual look with a roll neck and boots but if you wanted to dress it up, I'd wear with a black top with some kind of neckline interest such as this sweetheart style top from H&M. If you're into prints and a bolder look, I think it would look great paired back with leopard print or something like this ombre top. For a going out look, I'd wear with heels but for a more laid back look, I'd pair back with a burgundy boot to bring all the gorgeous earthy tones together.

I agree with you on the jacket, the jeans would look too matchy matchy if they're the same tone/ wash. An all black outfit such as this dress would be an easy option but I'd also like to see it with winter whites- think ecru jeans and a nice roll neck underneath paired back with black boots. It would also work with leather trousers, a smart top and boots for a dressier look.

I have a pair of white boots and I actually find them really easy to style and they add an edge to any outfit. They go with anything really as they're a neutral- blue denim, black, brown tones. I've got a rixo zebra print dress that I always wear mine with- they just lift the outfit whereas black looks a bit boring and safe. Another idea would be a black satin midi and cream top, sticking to a monochrome look or even bringing in a pop of red would look lovely.

If you're happy to play around with colour, you could wear them with the orange skirt. Hope that helps

@frillseeking I’ve bought my 3 month old daughter a tartan dress for Christmas Day.

My DH and toddler son will be in matching-ish shirt and chinos. I’d love to find an outfit that complements her dress.

I’m 5’4”, mid-thirties, size 14/16. It needs to be breastfeeding friendly and ideally as cheap as possible!

thank you!

@Urgenthelplease hello! So good to see you back 😀 I remember your style and the kind of pieces we looked at- elevated basics and simple styling with a mannish edge. I've attached a couple of pieces below. The Zara bomber came to mind straight away because it's such an easy, throw on piece that instantly elevates your basic jeans and tshirt combo and looks really current and on trend. Don't be put off by the shoulders, they're not as extreme once on the body. I lived in mine until it turned too cold to wear it here (I've got a grey flannel style now and a cream boucle one.. they're just so easy to wear.) I was also thinking of a little trophy jacket like this Sandro one which you could wear with black trousers if you wanted a smarter look but it would also great with a basic Breton tee and jeans. I find these jackets are a really great piece to have in the wardrobe if you feel like dressing up but don't want to have to think too much about the rest of the outfit. I also love the Sezane knitwear you mentioned and I think the Betty style could possibly work in your climate. I love it as the set with the cream trouser- paired back with a pair of adidas gazelles it would look bang on (not sure about practicality with the baby!) I think a smart, casual day time set is worth its weight in gold. The cardigan could also be worn as a lightweight jacket with a tee underneath and you could wear with a slip skirt and trainers. Hope that's some food for thought! X

@Bunny2021 how lovely, I love a bit of matchy matchy 🥰 I think it's going to be difficult to find something that matches but you could compliment your DD's dress as you say. I'd probably go for something like this red satin skirt from New Look. I wondered if you might have a bf friendly top in your wardrobe already to save buying a whole new outfit. I did also see this little jacket from H&M which would look nice with a black velvet trouser or black skirt. I really like the check dress from New Look and it's button down so would work but I wasn't sure if it would clash or compliment the other outfits.
