I thought I'd do a Xmas edition of the styling threads I've done before for anyone who is interested 🎄👠

@Backinthedress what a gorgeous dress, it looks fab on your figure. I'd definitely it for gold as a metallic looks great paired back with these types of jewelled colours for party season. What style of gold platforms have you got? I have these ones from Monsoon and they're super comfy (I struggle with heels a little post kids/ post wearing trainers during covid!) or something like these gold kitten heels from Asos. I'd definitely go with the nude shoes over black if they are comfy and you want to wear something you already have

These are them. Need to totter round the house in them for a bit and see how long I can last!

Hi, I have loved this thread. Great outfits and exciting parties!!

I wonder if you can help me with a more mundane search?

I have been searching for a proper polo neck that actually fits tightly on my neck and has decent amount of fabric covering the neck. I am looking for any colour or fabric but preferably base layers.

I am clinging onto my very old ones because they fit properly. The new polo necks all seem to have super soft necks that just fall down and don’t keep my neck warm! Internet shopping is tricky because often the items are styled (maybe pinned tight?) as proper polo necks but when they arrive they are actually all floppy.

Im driving myself mad searching!!

Thank you for any advice !

CUDet · 24/11/2023 06:37

Loving the metallic shoes and sandals. With a knee length black dress, what tights would go with them? Nude, black sheer, fishnets?

Bigmousestrikesagain · 24/11/2023 08:21

Thanks both @frillseeking and @WeDidntHaveWaterBottlesInThe80s .

It’s a birthday not Xmas party - actively no sort of sparkles/velvety/Xmas vibes. Which makes finding a dress at this time of year more difficult!

I do agree that the GD is prob a bit too casual ( much as it does look good on - tbh I think I may return it as I suspect it’s a dress I will struggle to match with shoes generally! ). Val to the drawing board!

frillseeking · 26/11/2023 17:57

@Bigmousestrikesagain the blue Ghost skirt would look nice for a birthday party. It's dressy and smart without being over the top or too xmassy. I think the GD dress would work in your wardrobe if you do wear it as a day dress x

@Backinthedress how did you get on? They are great shoes to wear with the dress but I can imagine they're not the comfiest!

@Romanempirethoughts for something clean and tailored, I love this Whistles jumpsuit with lovely back detail. Also this style from. River Islandd* at Asos. (Ignore how they've styled it with the boots, it's sold out on the RI site so that's why I linked the ASOS one.) and this one with the lovely button detailing.

For something a bit more festive and if you're that way inclined, this style from
Nadine Merabi is a real show stopper and their styles look great on curves.

I also love the colour of this velvet style linkk*

Amazing! Thanks so much! I love all of your suggestions especially the blue velvet number 💙

An extra request if I may: I'm on the hunt for corduroy trousers with comfortable waist band. I tried the John Lewis ones and the waist band was wrong but fit in the leg). The halara ones look alright (don't know this brand) or maybe the joules ones (although potentially too short for winter??)

Thanks for the advice

Aria999 · 27/11/2023 00:17

I would love to find a casual and comfy but smart dress for family Christmas Day.

I'm 5 ft 4 and hourglass, 134 lbs, 32 DDD, with broad shoulders and a bit of a tummy problem.

I quite like this but it's too short.

I like warm autumnal colors, orangy reds. dark gold, camel, burgundy and black.

(I live in America in case you happen to know of international brands but of course I don't expect you to vet delivery options!)

lindyloo57 · 27/11/2023 09:07

Love the river island jumpsuit, I used to have one years ago, I now regret selling it , mine had elasticated back, pull on type, which i need, as I have broad shoulders so can never fit in a fitted with zip dress/ jumpsuit, wondering if you know where I can buy one. Thanks.

frillseeking · 27/11/2023 20:16

@lindyloo57 it's always easy to find pull on jumpsuit and shirred back milkmaid style dress in summer but it can be a bit harder to find for party season. I'd look for metallic knit fabrics, stretch velvets and plisses which are often styled with no zip and elasticated waist or a shirred bodice. I've linked some styles below. I've got the black velvet dress and it's so gorgeous on. I'm between sizes and also have a wider back but a bigger size isn't always as flattering whereas if I can get something with stretch, it often fits a lot better. Hope this helps

@CUDet I would go with black sheer or if you're feeling fancy, I love the embellished fishnets that are around at the moment. A really fun way to dress up a plainer dress and make it party

@GiveMeCoffeeandTV yes I see what you mean, when you start clicking through the images, a lot of the styles look quite floppy around the neck or they come up very short.

This style from Lululemon looks quite snug and it looks like a good base layer. Is this the kind of thing you had in mind?

lindyloo57 · 27/11/2023 21:02

@frillseeking thanks for your advice, I will look for a stretch velvet

Backinthedress · 27/11/2023 21:58

Tempted to wear them for the drinks and dinner, then switch to actual trainers for the dancing! Then I get new trainers, too. I'm obsessed with reebok classics so might find a pair in a grey or green. If I'm buying new shoes let them be ones that'll get worn lots!

CUDet · 28/11/2023 08:45

@frillseeking thanks, I've just ordered myself some sparkly fishnets from M&S.

NotMeekNotObedient · 29/11/2023 09:01

frillseeking · 05/11/2023 12:02

@pantsforteaagain if you go for navy as the dominant colour, i.e the coat, then you can add the black with the boots but you will soften up the overall look. Navy goes really well with camel, taupe tones, burgundy, grey and also with stronger colours such as red, forest green, mustard.

@frillseeking I love all these looks, I wear a lot of navy. But what would these women wear inside, without the coats to say a girls night out, a resturant then a cocktail bar?

Do you have any suggestions please? It would be much appreciated.

frillseeking · 30/11/2023 19:09

@NotMeekNotObedient I'd go for something like the below or a satin skirt. All of these would work well with navy 😀

Spooce · 30/11/2023 19:53

Hello, thank you for this fab thread! I wonder if I could ask advice. I’m 39, a 6 on top and 8 on bottom but with hardly any boobs. I work in academia so mostly wear jumpers with midi skirts and boots but wondered if you could suggest anything I might not have tried that would work for work and I could dress down with the kids. Thank you!!

Urgenthelplease · 30/11/2023 20:39

Hi @frillseeking love this new thread. You did some styling for me a while back when I was pregnant and it was so helpful (I lived in slip dresses and masculine jackets).

I've had the baby now but am wearing the same pair of denim shorts every day and various jumpers and miss looking more pulled together.
I love your moodboards and am really drawn to the beige and biscuit neutrals (Louise jumper and gold jeans are my fave so far).

Any other smarter hero pieces you'd recommend for a capsule wardrobe that's comfy enough or a sahm with young kids? I'm 5ft 7 size 12 and in a warm climate so although I love knitwear and leather I'm not going to get much use out of it.

frillseeking · 30/11/2023 20:49

@Spooce an easy day dress is always a great piece to have in your work wardrobe. You could throw on any of the styles below with tights and boots and look put together with a smart coat but equally, you could wear with a nice chunky cardigan for a more casual look or a leather jacket for off duty style (when it's a little warmer than it is currently!)

Thank you- I love the Oliver bonas dresses! Appreciate your time x

frillseeking · 30/11/2023 22:03

@Spooce yes love that one and it comes in lots of colours. It would look great with tights and brogues for a smarter look but equally fab with a pair of biker boots

OP posts:
frillseeking · 01/12/2023 09:56

Talking of Oliver Bonas, there are so many lovely pieces on their website at the moment. I love some of the printed midi dresses but also some great separates. I've attached below as some of these items have been asked for lots of times on the thread- easy dresses to wear over the festive period or for a xmas night out/ pulled together looks for lunch with friends etc
