Help. What to wear on my first flight

Yoohoo778611 · 20/10/2023 20:02

Im going on my first flight ever to tenerife with my friend.
She has only flown once before and that was to jersey.
What do we wear. We travel in November and have been
told how warm it is there. Should we wear shorts and t-shirt
on the plane but it will be cold in the UK before we go.
Silly thing to worry about.
We are late 50's not that means a lot.

Bamboo, natural fibres, anything comfy and you can go to the loo in a very small cupboard in.

Sinkingfeeling952 · 20/10/2023 20:06

I would wear t-shirt, jeans and take a light jumper / cardigan. You’ll have a coat etc with you but can take that off for the flight. Then just change in the airport when you get there if you’re worried, but you should be fine in jeans and a tshirt (or similar) on the transfer to your hotel. I find flights are usually a bit cold so better to be warmer on the plane. Have a lovely trip!

Supportyourlocal · 20/10/2023 20:06

wear a hoodie and leggings but pack some shorts In your hand luggage which you can change into in the toilet if you get too hot. Also I would pack some essentials in your hand luggage e.g toiletries and a bikini just incase your checked bag goes missing.

SeaToSki · 20/10/2023 20:07

I would wear yoga pants and a tshirt with a sweater, trainers on the plane and take a pair of shorts, sunglasses, hat and sandals in your carryon. Then change at the airport when you are in arrivals and waiting for your bag to come out. Also pack a swim suit in your carryon in case your bag gets lost.

coxesorangepippin · 20/10/2023 20:07

I'd wear comfy pants, a thin hoodie and a coat

Then you can un layer upon arrival

startingoveragainagain · 20/10/2023 20:07

Layers are your friend. You want to be as comfortable as possible.

Leggings, t-shirt, cardigan, pashmina, thick socks (to wear walking around the plane), slip-on flat shoes. You can go from hot to cold in minutes on a plane.

If you want to wear shorts but them in your carry-on bag and change into them before you land when you are freshening up.

Lagershandy · 20/10/2023 20:19

I always wear the M&S tapered ankle grazer drawstring trousers. They are so easy to wear, comfortable but smart looking. I wear them with a t shirt and a cashmere hoodie, light enough to travel in but will keep you warm. I have flown many long haul trips in these and the trousers are a God send.
I would advise slip on shoes, saves hassle at security.
Enjoy your holiday!

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 20/10/2023 20:30

Leggings, t-shirt, zip-up hoodie. It's cold on planes, you'll regret it if you wear shorts.

SM4713 · 20/10/2023 20:33
  • Planes can be chilly. I always take a light pashmina/scarf. Handy to cover your shoulders if cold, and can double as a neck pillow.
  • My feet sometimes swell (more so on very long haul) so wear slip on, or shoes that are flexible, not tight to start with and not rigid
  • On the flight, I remove my shoes and put under the seat infront. I then put on a pair of those hotel type slippers when walking about. You'll find all manner of questionable liquids on the floor in the bathroom- so never wander about in socks or bare feet! 😬
  • A min facial moisturiser is handy because the air con can be drying to your skin. Also, a lip salve is handy.
Libertass · 20/10/2023 20:43

I would wear comfortable clothes ; jeans, trainers, a t shirt and a jumper of some sort which I could remove on the flight.

Much more importantly, I would pack all essential documents, medication, valuables, cash, camera, electronic devices etc etc in my hand luggage not in my checked bag. I would also pack swimwear and a change of clothing in my hand luggage, just in case my bag was delayed. It’s rare, but it does happen.
I would also check out the rules on taking sharp objects, liquids, pastes & gels on the website of the airport you’re flying from, and make sure I comply, to avoid my stuff being confiscated at security & binned. I would also make sure the weight & dimensions of my bags complies with the airline’s rules, to avoid excess charges.
Enjoy your trip!

LIZS · 20/10/2023 21:06

Layers and comfortable. It can be chilly on the plane so lightweight clothing you might wear in evenings like a cardigan and cotton/linen trousers or skirt.

Hotchocolatemousse · 20/10/2023 23:01

Sparesocks, undies and a shawl which doubles up as a blanket on the flight.

beachmum1 · 20/10/2023 23:03

The airport on arrival will be air conned, as will taxi/coach transfer. I wouldn't change till you get to your hotel room!

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 21/10/2023 05:19

Option 1 long maxi dress with leggings underneath to keep warm on the plane. Extra layers on top to keep warm. Go to the bathroom in the airport and take the leggings off and layers.

Option 2 light wafty palazzo pants with vest top, then a long sleeved top over to keep warm on the plane. Extra layers as necessary. Remove in airport on arrival, vest and palazzo nice and floaty.

I Keep my flip flops on the front of my case, so change before getting in transfer bus. Takes 2 seconds.

I always carry a large scarf to use as blanket or scarf on the plane as they can be really cold.

Allow for feet swelling in shoe choice. No belts or tricky shoes to remove. It can be easier to take the majority of jeweller off, keep it in your bag and put on Once through security. The amount of times I've had to try unhook my friends bracelets at security!

PepsiMaxLime · 21/10/2023 05:24

@Lagershandy do you have a link for the trousers please?

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 21/10/2023 05:25

A maxi dress going up stairs to a plane may not be safe, especially if carrying on cabin suitcases. You can trip as it is.

Graciebobcat · 21/10/2023 05:49

Anything relaxed and comfortable as you can swell up a bit on an aeroplane. Check the weather before you go, but it's usually still 20 something degrees even in November, so summery clothes, with something warm in case the plane is cold and for the evenings.

I would wear something like wide leg jeans or trousers, t shirt, sweatshirt (which I can take off and tie round my waist) and pumps/trainers.

I did a similar trip and wore a long sleeveless dress and trainers with a warm but lightweight jacket. I was warm enough on the flight and then just whipped off the jacket once we arrived.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 21/10/2023 06:21

Anything that doesn't highlight a bloated stomach imo.I bloat on every flight I go on.

meatbaseddessert · 21/10/2023 06:21

I've been travelling ultra long haul for a trillion years. Frequently going from winter to summer or vice versa. Always dress for plane comfort and not being too cold or hot on arrival. Don't dress for UK weather. You are in it for minutes at the start and end of the journey
Leggings and a comfy top. I have a cashmere poncho that is ideal for cold planes or disrobing if they decide to whack up the heat. Easy slip on and off shoes. Flip flops ideal plus socks to slip on if your feet get chilly
Poncho can be shoved in my bag on arrival.
Tenerife isn't too long a flight (compared to my 27 hr ordeals) but it's always nice to pack spare knickers, toothbrush and paste and face wipes to freshen up just before landing.

BlueKaftan · 21/10/2023 06:27

Please don’t wear a hoodie. Try a long line cardigan over a soft blouse and a pair of lightweight trousers with an elasticated waistband. Comfortable and smart.

Umph · 21/10/2023 06:27

It’s a flight to Tenerife not Kuala Lumpur. It‘s 4-5 hours. You don’t need slippers! Or to ‘freshen up’! Just wear normal, comfortable clothes and nothing too bulky because the seats will likely be hideously small. Tenerife averages in the low 20s in November so you’ll be perfectly comfy in light trousers and a T-shirt.

sparklefresh · 21/10/2023 06:31

Yay! I'm excited for you OP. As PPS have said, comfy layers are key. Leggings, t shirt, a hoody/cardigan/jumper, maybe a pashmina or scarf. Planes can be weirdly cold!

McIntire · 21/10/2023 06:32

No to shorts.
What sort of thing do to normally wear @Yoohoo778611?

It will gives us some idea of your style as you don’t really want to be wearing/taking unnecessary clothes.

NonMiDispiace · 21/10/2023 06:34

Exactly what @Umph says, wear something comfortable, no tight waistbands, socks or shoes in case you get some swelling and change at the hotel.
No need for buying special clothes just for a flight 🙄
