Help. What to wear on my first flight

Yoohoo778611 · 20/10/2023 20:02

Im going on my first flight ever to tenerife with my friend.
She has only flown once before and that was to jersey.
What do we wear. We travel in November and have been
told how warm it is there. Should we wear shorts and t-shirt
on the plane but it will be cold in the UK before we go.
Silly thing to worry about.
We are late 50's not that means a lot.

This thread has promoted me to buy a travel outfit because I'm flying out to the med next weekend! I bought a long line ankle length mid weight cardi in the tesco sale for £10. Plus a pair of cotton joggers because I remembered the state of the plane loo floors.

The only reason I can think not to wear a hoody is difficulty removing it in a tight space ...

The one I suggested had a front zip.

Humidititties · 21/10/2023 13:30

I'm just back from Aus and I wore slim fit black joggers with a drawstring waist, plain black fitted t shirt and a black zip up hooded top. I travelled out in sandals but my feet swelled so much so wore my crocs coming back. Stylish no, comfortable very.

Come on. Does no one make the slightest effort in public any more?

Hoodies and leggings are casual wear for walking the dog or working in the garden. Is it really asking too much that people dress a little nicer for travel?

I think most people make as much effort as they do day to day? I put on make up for everywhere apart from the gym, dress tidily enough, wear shoes appropriate to the situation etc

CryptidChangeling · 21/10/2023 15:09

I'll second other posters, avoid anything that will be difficult to take off in the plane loo or that will drag on the floor. The liquid on the floor is not water. 😳 I would also avoid wearing sandals for a similar reason.

A four hour flight is fairly short and you can probably get away with wearing what you wear normally.

The big trend I've noticed flying lately is the wearing of matched sets by seemingly everyone!

EmpressSoleil · 21/10/2023 15:16

Unlike seemingly every other poster, I always find planes too hot. So I do agree that layers are the way to go so you can find a comfortable temperature.

Other than that, wear something comfy. No one will be taking any notice of what you're wearing so just dress for yourself.

In what way does what people wear on a plane affect you in any way? Just because you’ve decided that hoodies and leggings are only for gardening and dog walking, it doesn’t mean the rest of us have to adhere 🙄.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 21/10/2023 15:22

Sorry @CryptidChangeling I quoted the wrong post 🙈that was for @LaurieStrode .

Careeradviceplease1234 · 21/10/2023 15:28

Dress in layers so you will be warm enough in UK but can take some stuff off as it gets hotter. Also bare in mind returning can be chilly so bring a jumper/hoodie for landing back in the UK.

Have a fantastic time!

megletthesecond · 21/10/2023 15:34

I'm 50 next year. Do I need to bin my hoodies? I was just wearing one with ripped jeans too.....

sep135 · 21/10/2023 15:41

Meglethesecond gasp, not on a plane I hope? (Which apparently is akin to dressing up for tea at the palace). On the other hand, the Concorde lounge is full of people in jeans and even the bog standard sweatshirt hoodies.

They might not be what you'd wear for travel but personally I want to be comfortable on the plane, not necessarily looking elegant.

Still trying to work out the 'obvious reasons' that us women in our 50s shouldn't wear hoodies....and don't tell me to read the thread because I have!!

I normally wear loose ankle grazer cotton trousers from M&S but the new puppy has destroyed those so I'm off to look at cuffed jersey joggers. I also wear a t shirt, hoodie and a denim jacket, plus trainers. It's been the perfect outfit up to now.

You're right, it all went downhill when they closed Croydon airport.

Citrusandginger · 21/10/2023 16:58

In the 70's my DF wore a suit on a plane and DM a dress coat & heels. I'm so glad no one cares about such daft sartorial standards any more.

Why? if I'm going to be on a plane for hours I'm going to dress in what I feel comfortable with. What's the reason for 'dressing nicer' for travel? I've no interest in what fellow travellers are wearing and they almost certainly have no interest in my clothes either.

Incidentally, I don't walk the dog or work in the garden (don't have either). I do have hoodies and leggings, though.

Hbh17 · 21/10/2023 17:00

Definitely not shorts on the plane - marks you out as a tourist! Planes can be chilly, so go with layers (& you will also need them for coming back).

43ontherocksporfavor · 21/10/2023 17:01

She is a tourist. What’s wrong with being a tourist? Tenerife survives on tourists.

Edited

And also what level of travel requires different standards?

So presumably bus wankers can wear hoodies and leggings, this is ok
But I suspect you must upgrade if travelling by coach, particularly National Express.
Train Im guessing is yet another step up, this is where you bring out your semi designer stuff, no supermarket fashion here please
Planes, well as above, dress coat, full suit and tie, hats compulsory. Plus cigarettes with art deco holders.

Aunt wore a suit and had her hair done a la Bet Lynch for a flight to Australia (late 1960s). Bet by the end of that she'd have killed for leggings and a hoodie.

Almondmum · 21/10/2023 17:06

I'm laughing at the idea of not wanting to mark yourself out as a tourist - on a plane!!!

LeonBlack · 21/10/2023 17:08

It’s a short flight. Wear whatever you’re comfortable in, ideally layers. I generally wear gym leggings and a couple of layers on top. But for a short haul, I’d happily wear jeans.

It won’t be particularly warm there in November, so def don’t travel in shorts 😂

xyz111 · 21/10/2023 17:14

I wear leggings, T-shirt and jumper. So ca. take the jumper off if it's warm when land. Wear whatever is comfy, nothing tight and restrictive.

momager1 · 21/10/2023 17:29

I travel often between a carribean country (my home) and Canada . 56 years old and YES I wear yoga pants or leggings on a flight..with a tank top and a hoodie (front zip up ) Also always trainers (do NOT go in a plane toilet in sandals...YUCK) Heading back up in late November and worried as I no longer own a winter coat.. just going to style it out with my hoodies lol. (hopefully my daughter has an extra coat for me!)
