Help. What to wear on my first flight

Yoohoo778611 · 20/10/2023 20:02

Im going on my first flight ever to tenerife with my friend.
She has only flown once before and that was to jersey.
What do we wear. We travel in November and have been
told how warm it is there. Should we wear shorts and t-shirt
on the plane but it will be cold in the UK before we go.
Silly thing to worry about.
We are late 50's not that means a lot.

A bit of ageism on this thread re what grans would have worn in the 80s. The reality is that not all women in their late 50s think hoodies are a good idea. For obvious reasons.

I'm intrigued to know what 'obvious reasons' you're thinking of for women in their late 50s not to wear hoodies, which would not make you just as ageist as the comments you criticised.

I’m amazed at all these people who can’t sit in jeans especially as I teach students who
wear jeans every day and literally sit in them from 9-4 plus bus journeys etc - they must be superheroes! Plus honestly I feel 90% of the people you see on planes are wearing jeans.

But anyway. I’m flying somewhere warm next week and was planning chinos, long sleeve loose top and denim jacket. That was I don’t have to pack the jacket and I’ve got the chinos for the flight back too. But I’ll be warm enough on the plane. Socks and trainers. Done.

Yoohoo778611 · 21/10/2023 09:09

Wow some lovely suggestions.
Don't tell me off but I have a couple of hoodies (hiding behind the sofa)

Thank you

I am always freezing on the plane and the coach transfer if you get one so take layers. Leggings that you can fold up and don't have diggy waistbands are great.
Shoes without laces - security can be a pain in the....
Floaty top - maybe vest underneath. Layer up so you can strip if you need to but are warm too!
If you want sleep on the plane take an eyemask x

WithIcePlease · 21/10/2023 09:11

I regularly go to Tenerife in October- January
I wear a pair of trousers - quite thin ones - that I can wear there on chilly evenings. Some sort of shirt and a summer weight quilted jacket. With trainers.
All of these things I can wear whilst in resort as it can be quite chilly and windy some evenings.

Trust me, most people on the flight will be in joggers, jeans and trainers

Have fun

Jeans are fine but for women there are so many other options. If you live in jeans, wear them. I don’t so would always choose wide leg trousers in jersey/cotton/linen depending on climate.

Caspianberg · 21/10/2023 09:20

Hoody’s are fine to take with you. They are just awkward to remove in plane if you end up sitting in middle or near window and have to ask stranger to move to be able to stand up properly

Yeah - students

tbh, the older I get the more comfy I need to be, especially when having to sit still for hours on end.

Woman in 50s here. Owner of at least one hoodie. What on earth are the 'obvious reasons' why this is not a good idea?

43ontherocksporfavor · 21/10/2023 09:31

Read the thread!

43ontherocksporfavor · 21/10/2023 09:32

Sorry that was rude but a few ideas have been mentioned several times.

JFDIYOLO · 21/10/2023 09:34

Have a lovely time!

Yes, definitely layers.

Soft fabric.

Nothing that bunches or binds ...

Something soft to wrap up in

A little pillow.

Plenty of water.

Don't booze.

FoleyHuck · 21/10/2023 09:36

I've just travelled (long haul) from cold to hot and back again and I wore a soft jersey maxi skirt, a t-shirt and a cardigan. The jersey fabric meant it was warm enough at this side; if it wasn't I'd have put tights under and then removed them when I got on the flight or arrived. Skirt also meant cool and breezy for the journey to destination at that side. It didn't really crease and was super comfy for the flight.

I also had a big pashmina wrap which I was glad of as it was cold on the flight. Had I had space in my carry on I'd have packed flip flops for arrival but my trainers were ok for the transfer.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 21/10/2023 09:40

It’s depends on a lot of factors, your own style, what time you’re landing, whether you’re travelling to the airport on public transport, apparently the age restrictions on hoodies…

I wear leggings or combat pants with a vest too underneath and a hoodie. I don’t bother with a coat as it’s not worth having to cart it around for a few minutes of warmth between the car and the airport. When you get there you can take the hoodie off but if you land at night, even hot countries get a bit chilly on the evenings. I’ve experimented with putting cycling shorts under combat pants with the view to taking the pants off when we arrive at the airport but once you get there You just want to get out so can’t be bothered messing about.

LaurieStrode · 21/10/2023 09:46

No shorts or hoodies on plane. You can be comfortable AND elegant.

It’s a flight to Tenerife not Kuala Lumpur. It‘s 4-5 hours. You don’t need slippers! Or to ‘freshen up’! Just wear normal, comfortable clothes and nothing too bulky because the seats will likely be hideously small.

I'm with you. These threads always bring out a lot of organic cotton yoga pants with a cashmere jumper spun from the finest herds of Mongolian goats.

I fly short haul, long haul, economy, business and first and turn up in normal clothes (including in the nice lounges). Anything goes, it's not a fashion show or dinner at the Ritz.

@sep135

What is your definition of "normal clothes"?

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 21/10/2023 09:51

Well I wear hoodies all the time when not at work, including band hoodies, cartoon characters that I like and often teamed with skinny jeans.
This is what I'll be wearing when I fly to America in January.
I'm 60. 😊😊

Woman in 60s here with a couple of hoodies in the wardrobe. What's the 'obvious reasons,' ? because they aren't obvious to me either.

everycloud3 · 21/10/2023 09:54

Layers! I get hot on a plane so I tend to wear comfy bottoms such as leggings with a T-shirt (long enough to cover bum, I have a weird thing about short tops and leggings 😂) and then I'll take a jumper or a hoodie too, socks and comfy trainers and pack some flip flops in my hand luggage.

Have a great time OP!

LaurieStrode · 21/10/2023 09:46

OP isn't going to be banned from getting on the plane if she wears shorts or a hoodie. Why does she need to be 'elegant' for a flight to Tenerife?

SharonEllis · 21/10/2023 10:04

43ontherocksporfavor · 21/10/2023 09:31

Read the thread!

Is this aimed at me? I have read the thread. The only thing I've seen is that some people apparently have difficulty taking a hoodie off without elbowing people. Not sure why that applies particularly to women in their 50s? I'm pretty practised at taking hoodies off myself. Not sure what difference a hood makes either. Imagine the OP is pretty aware of her own competencies in this respect.

43ontherocksporfavor · 21/10/2023 10:08

Yes but see my second text. The only reason I can think of is hot flushes and not being able to remove it quick enough in a tight space. I get them and it’s not pleasant when you can’t easily strip.

Londonlondon4 · 21/10/2023 10:19

layers. Always socks and shoes that are easy to remove in security. Dark trousers in case of any spills.

have fun!

PrintersCourt · 21/10/2023 10:47

Love how OPs thread has been derailed into a hoodies vs elegance battle 😂

I’m nobody’s idea of elegant but I scrub up ok and my hoodies aren’t even cashmere 🤫😮

sep135 · 21/10/2023 11:14

What is your definition of "normal clothes"?

Erm, whatever you wear normally and find comfortable. Jeans, shorts, leggings, T-shirts, jumpers, skirt, hoodies (finest cashmere or otherwise...).
