Help. What to wear on my first flight

Yoohoo778611 · 20/10/2023 20:02

Im going on my first flight ever to tenerife with my friend.
She has only flown once before and that was to jersey.
What do we wear. We travel in November and have been
told how warm it is there. Should we wear shorts and t-shirt
on the plane but it will be cold in the UK before we go.
Silly thing to worry about.
We are late 50's not that means a lot.

I wear dresses more often than not anyway, but particularly on a flight because they're easier to go to the toilet in (and I always need a wee on the plane - stress or excitement I suppose!).

I also wear a non-underwired bra, because you can guarantee I'll set off the scanner at the airport otherwise!

Hope you have a fantastic holiday.

43ontherocksporfavor · 21/10/2023 08:12

I only wear underwired bras and have never set off a scanner.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/10/2023 08:14

Jeans and a t-shirt with a jumper to put on if you get cold. I'm always a bit baffled by the insistence on extra-comfiness. You'll be sitting in a chair for a couple of hours - normal clothes are fine! Have a great trip!

43ontherocksporfavor · 21/10/2023 08:17

4 hours to Tenerife plus airport sitting. Depends on the jeans you wear really. Soft wide legged would be ok but I would t want to be sitting about in skinnies.

muddyford · 21/10/2023 08:17

Lightweight trousers (not jeans) with pockets, T-shirt and light sweatshirt or cotton jersey. Perhaps a cotton gilet, with pockets. Nothing too constricting on your feet. It should be shorts when you get there!

Please don’t wear a hoodie. Try a long line cardigan over a soft blouse and a pair of lightweight trousers with an elasticated waistband. Comfortable and smart.

Eh? I honestly don't understand the issue with a hoodie... I'm in my 50s if that's relevant!

43ontherocksporfavor · 21/10/2023 08:21

Perhaps pp is experiencing flushes and needs to dehoodie in a hurry.
I don’t do shorts so that never factors in my clothing anyway.
On a recent flight to Spain I wore elasticated wide leg trousers, Birkenstock style sliders, a vest top and a light sweatshirt over.

I just wear normal straight-leg jeans. I wouldn't wear them normally if they weren't comfortable to sit around in.

I think it’s because imagine trying to take off a hoodie over your head while you’ve got people sitting either side of you about 1 inch away from your elbows

RaceToTheMiddle · 21/10/2023 08:26

Just wear whatever you’re comfortable in. Hard for us to make suggestions! It’s only 4hrs

OnLockdown · 21/10/2023 08:26

BlueKaftan · 21/10/2023 08:00

Aww look at you with your Cashmere hoody! As long as it’s Cashmere then it’s okay? Ageism and snobbery.

You are the one being snobby. What's wrong with a hoody?

bellac11 · 21/10/2023 08:31

I do completely opposite to a lot of the advice here to be honest, I wear my heaviest clothes/coat/shoes so that they dont take up room and weight in the case.

Not sure it needs all the prep Im reading about it, you're just sitting down for lots of the day and shuffling round the airport.

WhatWillIWear · 21/10/2023 08:32

The OP’s going to Tenerife, @bellac11 , she doesn’t need to carry heavy clothes for her trip.

PrintersCourt · 21/10/2023 08:33

I like yoga leggings for travelling, the ones with flat pockets on the leg. They’re excellent for putting your phone in which you need to get out multiple times to show boarding passes etc.

I like to be comfy on a trip - it’s much more than 4 hours when you factor in getting to/from the airport and all the sitting around - but also look nice so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with you asking.

I am 50 though so just off to the charity shop with all my hoodies…

43ontherocksporfavor · 21/10/2023 08:33

@PrintersCourt 😂

NutellaNut · 21/10/2023 08:34

Wear anything you like that’s comfortable for a four hour flight. You’ll be sitting down for most of it, so nothing too tight, particularly around the waist. T shirt fine with something on top. Probably not shorts as planes can be quite chilly. Light layers so if it’s hot when you land you can take your cardi/ hoodie/ jumper/jacket off and shove it in your bag. Comfy shoes or trainers are a must as feet can swell a bit.

A bit of ageism on this thread re what grans would have worn in the 80s. The reality is that not all women in their late 50s think hoodies are a good idea. For obvious reasons.

Whats the obvious reason?

Because its not obvious to me in my 50s

Well out of all her clothes some will be heavier than others. Im just saying that my MO is to wear those heavier clothes as it gets them out of the case, so I would wear trainers (heavy), jeans (heavy) etc

I mean a hoody could also be a fitted Zip up top with a hood. There are many variables.

Finding this thread very odd!

I like to be comfortable travelling. I have bad chronic pain and a skin condition that's seriously exacerbated by tight or fitted clothes on flights. My hooded top also doubles up as a back support rolled up into a pillow.

Melonandfalafel · 21/10/2023 08:53

Firstly, enjoy your trip, and have a lovely time.
As not too long you don’t need to go overboard with what to take but I’d suggest:
1 Layers - it’s either too hot or cold!
2 A book / magazine
3 lip balm and hand moisturiser
4 comfy trousers, don’t wear shorts, as airline seats are scratchy!
5 nothing too tight around the waist - my stomach expands
6 travel sickness pills - I started to get ill after covid and always take one now
7 just wear shoes and socks

Other than that nothing really. My lovely Dad always used to always make us wear something smart when we flew, and I’ve continued that theme as it makes me feel a bit more special / excited about my holidays, but most people don’t anymore!

Melonandfalafel · 21/10/2023 08:55

Don’t just wear socks and shoes!!! If you manage to get through airport security you may give the other passengers a bit of a fright 😁

Finallybreathingout · 21/10/2023 08:59

I wore a hoodie on a flight yesterday and did almost take the eye out of the person sitting next to me when taking it off but otherwise no awful things happened.

I have never given conscious thought to what I wear when I fly. Although someone has posted an actual picture of something I wore on a recent flight which must make me clever about it naturally I guess.

@Yoohoo778611 I think you’re thinking about the temperature change most? Last time I went from cold to hot I went for linen trousers, so I didn’t look that odd on the way to the airport but wasn’t boiling when I landed. Probably would work both ways. But flights coming back from hot places are always full of people in shorts who look instantly frozen when they get home! No one is going to look at you twice if you decide to wear shorts on the plane, just bring something a bit warmer to stick on when you land if you’re getting public transport home and can’t just sit in your warm car and pretend you’re still on holiday for a bit longer.

KevinDeBrioche · 21/10/2023 09:01

Dress for comfort. I wouldn’t even consider wearing shorts (planes get so cold), jeans, anything wide legged or an underwired bra.

I usually wear leggings or slim cut joggers with vest (no bra) plus thin merino (warm!) jumper or hoody.

I always have a cashmere beanie hat and scarf in my hand luggage (Uniqlo make good ones) plus thick compression socks.

I usually wear trainers but can see the logic in slides, I just don’t really like them.

Citrusandginger · 21/10/2023 09:02

I'm always cold on planes so take a scarf that doubles as a blanket. It will also be handy in the evenings as even Tenerife can be cold at night in November. A lightweight, squashable padded coat is a good idea too.

Other than that, whatever you'd wear to be comfy. I usually wear a combination of trousers, t shirt & jumper, & either fit flops or trainers. If wearing trainers, be aware that your feet could swell so don't wear socks that are too tight.

Have a fabulous time - hope you get to enjoy some sun.

MrsMoastyToasty · 21/10/2023 09:03

Something that you can sleep in if necessary in case you get delayed. Something like yoga pants, t shirt and a cardigan.
