Help. What to wear on my first flight

Yoohoo778611 · 20/10/2023 20:02

Im going on my first flight ever to tenerife with my friend.
She has only flown once before and that was to jersey.
What do we wear. We travel in November and have been
told how warm it is there. Should we wear shorts and t-shirt
on the plane but it will be cold in the UK before we go.
Silly thing to worry about.
We are late 50's not that means a lot.

I wear a light weight thermal under my light weight top to keep warm on the plane and also have a packable Mac. The thermal can easily by packed away into hand luggage. Also/ alternatively a scarf to act as a blanket is a good idea as planes are cold and they have fierce air conditioning. Useful for visiting churches etc. In hand luggage have swim suit as check in might be delayed. If you are not staying in a place with free beach towels put a light weight camping towel in hand luggage.

insofar as toiletries are concerned, don’t forget the rules - minis only in hand luggage in clear plastic bags. You can’t take more than 100 ml.

Anything that doesn't highlight a bloated stomach imo.I bloat on every flight I go on.

So do I usually, but I didn't the last time. I'd had a decent breakfast - avocado on toast with eggs - and drunk plenty of water beforehand. I was also part way through a diet plan and had cut out some things. I'm wondering if that was a factor.

Please don’t wear a hoodie. Try a long line cardigan over a soft blouse and a pair of lightweight trousers with an elasticated waistband. Comfortable and smart.

What's wrong with a hoodie?

A long cardigan and blouse is what my grandmother would have worn to the airport in 1982.

PragmaticWench · 21/10/2023 06:54

I always find my ankles get cold on flights, so shorts do not sound good.

I love wearing something with a hood on a flight. I put the hood up to keep my head Iof the headrest and feel protected and snuggly

Layers.

Never wear shorts of plane as if they turn air con up it’s freezing.

Just something that’s comfortable to wear sitting for 4+ hours. And layers that are easy to take in and off in confined space. Probably not a hoody, but open cardigan handy as can use as blanket also.

SharonEllis · 21/10/2023 07:10

I would avoid things like maxi dresses and long floppy trousers. Plane toilets are small, awkward and unisex so often men have pissed everywhere so clothes that don't drag on the floor are much more comfortable I'd say. Layers & easy shoes will be fine

WonderingWanda · 21/10/2023 07:13

How exciting op. It won't be unbearably hot there in November so you won't need shorts. Planes can be chilly and or stuffy and hot all in the same flight. I usually wear something comfy like leggings or palazzo pants a t shirt and a cardigan. I always find jeans a bit uncomfortable on a plane.

meatbaseddessert · 21/10/2023 07:18

No maxi dresses or floaty pants. They'll drag on wet plane toilet floors and too much bulk.
Definitely not shorts. Jeans no, Always uncomfortable after air pressure bloat. For all the experiences of cold flights I've had as many roasting hot.
As PP have said it's not a long flight.

A bit of ageism on this thread re what grans would have worn in the 80s. The reality is that not all women in their late 50s think hoodies are a good idea. For obvious reasons.

useitorlose · 21/10/2023 07:32

I'm travelling between Abu Dhabi and the UK next week - here, I am still in shorts and t shirts! I have a night flight of 7 hours on the way there, so I'm planning to wear my lululemon scuba jog pants or Sweaty Betty leggings even though I'll be warm at the airport here, with a t shirt, soft bra and zip up hoody. I'll put my down coat squished into my hand luggage (v short trip) and hopefully will be able to layer down at the AD end and layer up at the UK end! I'm packing my gloves too as I have Raynauds. On the way back I have a daytime flight, so I'm more likely to wear the leggings, a clean t shirt and the same hoody. I have some pull on trainers that are very light weight and will be suitable for all stages of the trip. Planes are always cold, airport AC can be fierce too.

Bear in mind that you are concerned about being hot on arrival. People live there all year round and they will continue to wear regular clothes like jeans and trousers all year round, as we do here. I tend to avoid jeans in the summer but continue to wear lighter weight trousers, even when it's 45C here.

Shoes thats easy to take off (on case of security requiring it)
No belt as you have to take it off at security

Hmm … A shirt and a long cardigan is probably exactly what my very stylish mother wore on flights in the 80s. I probably wore the same! Now - we’d almost certainly both be in some version of a cashmere hoodie. I’m over 60, and the reasons why I shouldn’t wear one are not at all obvious to me …

Please advise!

It’s a flight to Tenerife not Kuala Lumpur. It‘s 4-5 hours. You don’t need slippers! Or to ‘freshen up’! Just wear normal, comfortable clothes and nothing too bulky because the seats will likely be hideously small.

I'm with you. These threads always bring out a lot of organic cotton yoga pants with a cashmere jumper spun from the finest herds of Mongolian goats.

I fly short haul, long haul, economy, business and first and turn up in normal clothes (including in the nice lounges). Anything goes, it's not a fashion show or dinner at the Ritz.

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 21/10/2023 07:50

My maxi dresses aren't floor length, usually mid calf so no worry of pissy hems or tripping.

Most palazzos are cropped these days are they not? Maybe I'm describing things incorrectly. I find it difficult to find full length ones.

Anyway, comfortable, non tight, non tripping up or dragging in piss, layers to remove and add as necessary and translate this into your own style!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/10/2023 07:51

Cuffed hem trousers. Yoga/jersey style. nothing flappy due to the loos being grim.

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 21/10/2023 07:52

What are the obvious reasons not to wear a hoody? My 72 year old very close friend wears fitted hooded tops on occasion.

PuttingDownRoots · 21/10/2023 07:54

The only reason I can think not to wear a hoody is difficulty removing it in a tight space ...

43ontherocksporfavor · 21/10/2023 07:55

I always wear soft trousers, not jeans. It’s about 4 hours and can be cold in the plane with air con so I would t go for shorts. A soft , lightweight, jogger with a T shirt and light jumper/ hoodie and trainers. Next do some tapered jersey trousers that are a smarter jogger. Have a great time!

Hotchocolatemousse · 21/10/2023 07:55

Anyway @Yoohoo778611 wear light, comfy layers and definitely not shorts and t shirts on the plane. You'll get some odd looks from passengers if you do! Enjoy!

astarsheis · 21/10/2023 07:59

I fly quite a bit and have just done a double long haul back from far east.
I always wear black leggings trainers, vest top and a sweatshirt for comfort. Airplane cabins can be quite cold. When you arrive at your warmer destinations you can take your jumper off.
I wear black in case of spillages, either my own or other peoples which can happen quite often in confined aircraft seats. Husband was wearing a lovely white top on way back and attendant managed to spill cranberry juice on him.

BlueKaftan · 21/10/2023 08:00

Aww look at you with your Cashmere hoody! As long as it’s Cashmere then it’s okay? Ageism and snobbery.

skipandwhistle · 21/10/2023 08:03

Massively agreeing with soft cuffed trousers or leggings. You do NOT want the bottom of your pants potentially trailing on the toilet floor. Trust us on this.

I travel short and very long haul a lot, both economy and business, depending on the reason for the flight. Often travelling from winter to summer or vice versa. I always wear the same thing, which is trousers as above, plus a soft t-shirt and a cardigan. It's all about easy-on easy -off layering.

I'm a great fan of a Uniqlo down jacket because they roll up small enough to fit in your carryon, so you can take on or off easily when you reach the outside world.

The internal temperature on the plane doesn't reflect summer or winter. It can get chilly or it be really hot. If you're on a budget flight which won't have blankets, take something like a pashmina or as someone said above, a poncho. Ponchos are fab for travelling.

Slip-on type trainers are great for flying. You quite often have to take your shoes off to go through security and they're quick and comfortable.

As you can tell, I do not care one tiny jot for style when flying. Comfort is everything.

canyon2000 · 21/10/2023 08:08

I flew to Tenerife at the beginning of the month. I wore black combat trousers, t shirt and sweatshirt. On the way back I wore (shock, horror!!) shorts and a t shirt as it was 35C! Took a sweatshirt on the plane but it wasn't cold. Have a lovely holiday!
