Help. What to wear on my first flight

Yoohoo778611 · 20/10/2023 20:02

Im going on my first flight ever to tenerife with my friend.
She has only flown once before and that was to jersey.
What do we wear. We travel in November and have been
told how warm it is there. Should we wear shorts and t-shirt
on the plane but it will be cold in the UK before we go.
Silly thing to worry about.
We are late 50's not that means a lot.

I’m flying on Monday , I’ll be in a hoodie, leggings and trainers ….. and I’m 50
God forbid the riff raff travel by plane

LaurieStrode · 21/10/2023 18:15

Well, it was a lot more civilized back then. You didn't get every rag, tag and bobtail cramming in beside you.

It amuses me that people who shop for the rock-bottom fares and dress like they're sitting at home with a takeaway also complain about the no-frills plane cabins and indifferent / minimal service aloft.

Pewpewbarneymcgrew · 21/10/2023 18:17

Yes wouldn't want the plebs being able to go on holiday now would we ?

WhatWillIWear · 21/10/2023 18:35

@LaurieStrode your previous offensive comment has been deleted by MN.

Surely it’s best to stop now?

McIntire · 21/10/2023 18:42

Tbf, on everyone a flight to Tenerife will be a tourist

McIntire · 21/10/2023 18:43

Going for the culture obvs

LeonBlack · 21/10/2023 18:47

I'd feel like a bit of a tit getting dressed up to fly. Even on the rare occasion we fly in anything but economy, no one is dressed up.

StillWantingADog · 21/10/2023 18:49

I’d wear jeans, a tshirt, light hoody and perhaps a light coat. The last two you can ditch on the plane and when you get off the other end. Though if you are arriving in the evening it will be cool, I think.

McIntire · 21/10/2023 18:50

I’ve a 5:30am leave for the airport next week.

I shall we wearing what’s practical and comfortable.
Hair clipped back, and minimal makeup

Why on earth should people who can't afford expensive airlines have to put up with indifferent service? Amazing snobbery, harking back to the days when the plebs & imperial subjects knew their place! So civilized!

But surely you travel first where there's no danger of the ill-dressed proletariat venturing and people can appreciate your elegance?

Groovee · 21/10/2023 19:04

I tend to wear cropped trousers and a T-shirt, something light, so you don't feel to overheated when you get out the airport. I tend to wear something warmer home as it's often cold.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 21/10/2023 19:10

I haven't dressed 'elegantly' for a flight in the last 45 odd years I've been flying. I think that went out when holidays became cheaper and us sweaty masses started taking flights instead of leaving it for our betters.

Yeah, those chalk crosses were soooo sophisticated.

LaurieStrode · 21/10/2023 14:47

Come on. Does no one make the slightest effort in public any more?

Hoodies and leggings are casual wear for walking the dog or working in the garden. Is it really asking too much that people dress a little nicer for travel?

ha haa
You can always tell who is a regular flyer in long haul 1st as they are in well worn shorts and t shirts.

You can tell who never travels as they are dressed to the 9s

Pewpewbarneymcgrew · 21/10/2023 19:17

I have never paid the slightest bit of attention to what anyone else is wearing on a flight

Shrug. My first flight was as a child in 1973, and I've been traveling ever since.

There's no particular virtue in dressing like a slob, you know. Some of us can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Same. Apart from the bloke on a flight from Australia to London one January. 35c in Aus, freezing in London and he was wearing shorts, flip flops and a leather waistcoat. Just the ticket for waiting on the tube platform at 6.30am. I looked at him and thought 'first trip to England in winter, huh?'

No particular virtue in dressing up like the dog's dinner, either.

I think there is virtue in presenting a neat and well-dressed appearance, actually. There are entire industries that exist for that purpose, you know. And a long tradition of civilized people making some effort when in public spaces.

Again, do people think anything goes for work? A wedding? Church? The Queen Mary II? Or are hoodies and leggings a go-anywhere outfit?

Almondmum · 21/10/2023 19:38

How is economy class travel on a plane anything like work/weddings etc? It's basically a flying bus.

I don't get dressed up for public transport and I wouldn't for a plane.

I do dress smartly for weddings because it's nice to show the bridal party that this is an important celebration. I dress smartly for work (I could wear leggings and a hoody) because it gives me confidence.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 21/10/2023 19:39

All totally different scenarios to sitting in a cramped metal tube for hours for the purposes of getting somewhere. There might well be good reasons for presenting yourself well and neatly or elegantly. Flying isn't one of them.

HerMammy · 21/10/2023 19:52

Oh so MN; bamboo, linen, pashminas.
Everyone I see on flights is in leggings/joggers and hoody🤣

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 21/10/2023 21:03

It's an older demographic on the holiday flights I do - plenty of jeans and the odd dress. I wear jeans or trousers of some sort and layers on my top half. Sometimes I wear walking boots instead of having them add to the weight of my case.
