Help. What to wear on my first flight

Yoohoo778611 · 20/10/2023 20:02

Im going on my first flight ever to tenerife with my friend.
She has only flown once before and that was to jersey.
What do we wear. We travel in November and have been
told how warm it is there. Should we wear shorts and t-shirt
on the plane but it will be cold in the UK before we go.
Silly thing to worry about.
We are late 50's not that means a lot.

How is economy class travel on a plane anything like work/weddings etc? It's basically a flying bus.

I don't get dressed up for public transport and I wouldn't for a plane.

I do dress smartly for weddings because it's nice to show the bridal party that this is an important celebration. I dress smartly for work (I could wear leggings and a hoody) because it gives me confidence.

It's a flying bus because passengers treat it that way.

@HerMammy
i hate bamboo as a textile it takes ages to dry

Wow, do you see that op? If you wear the right clothes you can actually transform the plane! Wear something smart enough and it'll turn into a private plane. Booked into economy? Don't worry, wear a twin set and pearls and it'll magically turn into the first class section.

Tbf, on everyone a flight to Tenerife will be a tourist

Edited

Or a resident of Tenerife, or a friend or family member of someone who lives in Tenerife, or (like me, sometimes) travelling on business.

MN is very big on the 'flight = holiday' trope that doesn't exist in the real world.

I think you're lacking in aspiration. I'm going to wear a wedding dress next time. Hopefully it will turn into a church full of all MY people with the rag, tag & bobtails disappeared!

What’s wrong with being a tourist flying to a tourist destination?

sep135 · 22/10/2023 08:40

I also pack a couple of freshly starched linen napkins as I can't be doing with the paper ones. Terribly déclassé.

I used to take the monogrammed, bone-handled silver cutlery too but it caused awful problems going through the security scanners.

I take my personal butler with me

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 22/10/2023 09:03

Wear what you'll be comfortable in OP and bear in mind you can't really get up and walk around on a single aisle plane because the cabin crew are back and forth with trollies for much of the time. You'll be immobile for 4 hours.

Almondmum · 22/10/2023 09:04

Now come on fettleofkish, whilst not everyone on the flight to Tenerife will be a tourist, the whole point of the op is that she hasn't flown before and presumably didn't want to be uncomfortable - either physically or because she looked out of place.

Nobody is possibly going to look out of place dressed like a tourist on a plane to Tenerife are they? Even if there are a few locals flying home or a couple of business people on the flight. The chances of anyone thinking, 'wow she's obviously a tourist' because everyone else is dressed in business attire are slim to none.

Finallybreathingout · 22/10/2023 10:42

Also, still, what is wrong with looking like a tourist? Are we teenagers here who are convulsed with embarrassment that total strangers we will spend a few hours with might form some sort of opinion of us that might be slightly negative?

I totally get that this is the OP’s first flight and she doesn’t want to feel uncomfortable in any sense, and hopefully this thread has helped there, but beyond that, what on earth does it matter what other people on a flight might think of anyone? Get on, don’t smell or flash anything inappropriate, behave considerately. Job done.

PuttingDownRoots · 22/10/2023 10:51

I lived on a tourist island for a couple of years. Yes some people were obviously tourists (wearing unseasonal clothes such as shorts in winter, when we had a winter too for example). No one actually cared though... I was too busy wangling my children and suitcases full of stuff we couldn't buy there.

They probably wondered why I needed so much luggage!

JFDIYOLO · 22/10/2023 10:54

At one stage in my career I got to fly first and business class (on the client). Dressing down was the norm, but there was a lot of pashmina and perfume action.

jojoshouse · 22/10/2023 10:59

I'm going to Gran Canaria in November
It's normally around 24 degrees in November but depending what part of the island it can feel hotter
I'm just wearing leggings and tee shirt and a denim overshirt or a hoodie with trainers
It's only 4 1/2 hours to Canary Islands from the uk so you don't need to worry about plane clothes
Just wear a casual outfit

Alondra · 22/10/2023 11:15

Honestly? Check the weather the day before your departure. Tenerife can be warm or quite cool. Temperatures in Spain have nosed dived and even the Canaries can be cool in November.

Don't travel with shorts, I know many people do it from the UK but it's not a good look. A comfortable pair of cotton slacks/skirt with a tee shirt and a jacket in your hand luggage will cover all bases.

HerMammy · 22/10/2023 12:29

@sep135
You forgot your crystal champagne flute, one couldn't possibly drink from a plastic cup, ye horrors!!!!

GettingStuffed · 22/10/2023 17:14

I'm flying to the Carribbean in a few weeks. We're travelling to Gatwick one one day and flying the next. I'm wondering what to wear out the evening we arrive as we'll need to go out for dinner so I'll need to take something that's warm enough for that but is rewearable coming back.

I get your conundrum.

FeverBeam · 23/10/2023 11:01

I hope you enjoy your first flight, OP! Comfy is the way to go.

Have you been abroad before or is this your first time leaving the UK?

Hope you enjoy the Tenerife sun, and catch the travel bug ☺️
