…..a “Rains” rain jacket.

It was the first rainy autumnal feeling day this season and almost every adult was wearing a Rains rain coat, including me.

I mean I didn’t buy it to be ‘radical’ or ‘different’ - but I didn’t realise they were such a thing?! Like a uniform. Made me laugh a bit.

Is it the same in other places?

I’m in an affluent town commuter distance from London.

I live in Copenhagen and as a Danish Brand, they are insanely popular here the thing is they they are practical esp for here. It can be SO wet and the weather so interchangeable that the thinness of the jackets fit into bags easily, the trousers are great for cycling and the hoods have epic coverage. They’re not the most stylish but fuck me they’re practical

The OP is not excited..... she started a thread on a very valid Style & Beauty topic...
That coat has neither style nor beauty, unfortunately 😂
What's "very valid" about the topic, btw? @LaCerbiatta

To be fair we do get an awful lot of rain in the Uk so need something appropriate. Although it would have to be pouring down for me to wear one of these ghastly things.

Syndulla · 13/10/2023 07:18

I don't understand the appeal. The models all look like they are wearing tents. There are much more flattering but also practical alternatives around!

CharlotteRumpling · 13/10/2023 07:33

May I please ask what all you Londoners wear with the horribly changeable weather and humidity we have had?

I walk to the Tube in the rain
Then I squeeze onto it at rush hour so no room for bulky coats and umbrellas. Need something packaway that goes into my bag
Then I get off and walk a long way again so something breathable.
I am often carrying a laptop and other stuff
To top it all off I am peri-menopausal!l and constantly hot!

What would be light, practical and flattering? Currently wearing Uniqlo blocktech.

JaceLancs · 13/10/2023 07:34

Nope - nobody wearing them up here in the north west
Since the weather turned chilly most people are wearing some variety of padded coat or jacket (various brands from high end to primark)
As I look like a Michelin man I will be sticking to my wool/cashmere coats with an umbrella

FastFood · 13/10/2023 07:35

I love Rains. Got the poncho + a long hooded jacket and wear them all year round, just adding layers underneath. Been wearing them for 8 years now.

They look like plastic sweaty raincoats to me, nothing special. Funny what catches on. I hadn't heard of the brand either.

Here shackets are still the go to for fall (very popular last year). Over 30's are wearing them with their leggings still, under 30's with wide leg jeans. Blundstones and Birkenstocks still most popular footwear, or black and white runners, mostly Adidas and Nike.

West Coast Canada area. We get a lot of rain, but raincoats don't come out unless it's a downpour! Lululemon or Helly Hansen are most popular.

hilarious, just chatting about the blundstone/Birkenstock/white or black Nike thing with a friend over from the uk. Also in BC, son was at UVic until recently and that’s definitely the uniform - along with shackets and wide legged jeans for the girls.

Princesspollyyy · 13/10/2023 07:45

How did you know all the jackets you saw were Ranis? (Also had to Google as never heard of the brand)

I only say this, as there's no obvious logo, like for example The North Face jackets have an obvious logo on the front of their jackets.

Also, I have a similar rain jacket from New Look.

Lou197 · 13/10/2023 09:21

M&S have an idential copy!

EllaPaella · 13/10/2023 09:43

Never heard of them, will be on the lookout now while out and about!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 13/10/2023 10:16

SIL has one (bought as a present to her). I don’t get the hype at all. She’s into Cos and Arket so I guess it’s that look.

Fishandchipsatthebeach · 13/10/2023 10:22

They do have a tag on the side that says Rains and the buttons say Rains. So it’s subtle, but yes you can tell if it’s that brand if close enough.
Group of 4 women in my local cafe this morning, one wearing a Rains one and two wearing very similar but not branded jackets

I think they're nice, pretty stylish for rain gear. Scandi labels do tend to be good at that.
I'd like one but none of the current colours quite float my boat.

So only one other person had a 'Ranis' jacket on? Your opening post made out it was lots of others?

PuppyMonkey · 13/10/2023 12:22

Just Googled having been intrigued by the zombies comment. Never heard of them before but I live in the arse end of nowhere so that probably explains it. Grin

The opening post was talking about yesterday round and about the town . Follow up post was about this morning nipping into a cafe. I thought that was pretty clear.
Why are you saying "Ranis" by the way?

What was the point of the update? It just demonstrates that not everyone in Stepford has one of these jackets.

CharlotteRumpling · 13/10/2023 13:18

Man, this is a hard crowd.

Anyone able to link to the M and S dupe? I had a look but can only see very thick and warm raincoats.

JaneKatSuttonGoals · 13/10/2023 13:22

Never heard of them but when I was growing up if that happened with specific t-shirts or jumpers it usually meant they'd been acquired from the back of a lorry & sold round the local pubs 😂🤣.
Probably not the case in an affluent commuter town though.
Am off to Google coz my primary one was rubbish last year!

Janieforever · 13/10/2023 13:24

Op, I think it’s sweet, on reflection, are you just really chuffed with your jacket and wanted to talk about it? It’s ok to say I’ve x jacket and I’m chuffed to nuts and wish to tell everyone.😄

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 13/10/2023 13:32

£80 for a cagoule??

JaneJeffer · 13/10/2023 13:45

It never rains but it pours

Fishandchipsatthebeach · 13/10/2023 14:08

Funny how some people are getting so worked up about this post. It’s in style & beauty so if what people wear doesn’t interest you why read it and comment? Why not just scroll on by?

Spotted a lot of these jackets in London yesterday too (bags have been a common sight for years). At least they make sense for the muggy with intermittent downpours weather here, much more so than the currently similarly ubiquitous suede Adidas Sambas/Gazelles. I'm slightly tempted by the cape, but wondering how practical it would really be.

CharlotteRumpling · 13/10/2023 14:52

I might even buy one! Makes sense for my lifestyle. I flatter myself I won't look like I am in an episode of the Walking Dead!

Just saw a Fendi cagoule for £1850 so this is a steal. ( Not really).
