...is the new laughing at salad.

Why do all fashion bloggers insist on postures that express, "sorry for existiiiiing! Aren't I the cutest doormat you've ever seen?"

My Pinterest feed is full of these women.

I hadn't heard of laughing at salad before but it's spot on 🤣

EVHead · 10/10/2023 18:58

I can’t bear the standing with your arms dangling by your sides, looking utterly fucking miserable pose.

Lorelaigilmore88 · 10/10/2023 19:00

Yes its annoying. Its like ad companies go out of their way to make female models look like absolute drips.

TheLeadbetterLife · 10/10/2023 19:01

I also search a lot for 80s fashion images, and the women in those are fucking fantastic. Mistresses of the universe.

It's not even the professional models mostly, it's the bloggers.

It’s the turned in toes which I find ridiculous in grown women. Are they six?

There is a particular BBC presenter, often filmed standing, who regularly stands like this. I really like her but wish she wouldn’t.

I think they want to look six, that's what's so odd about it. Like using childish poses makes them seem subservient and unthreatening, and by extension I suppose this is meant to be attractive?

What does this tell us about 21st century society? Nothing good.

In real life, I often see grown women using their hands very childishly, too. Self-consciously moving their fingers like a toddler who's not developed full motor control.

What's 'laughing at salad'?

I was browsing Amazon earlier and getting gradually more nonplussed at the oddness of some of the poses, especially the ones where they insert their fingertips second-knuckle-deep into their pointless, vestigial trouser pockets, then either twist into wee-wee dance position, or pull some kind of casual wrist dislocation manoeuvre to make it look like they DELIBERATELY WANT their trouser pockets to be borrower-sized so that they can look as cool and laid-back as this.

off · 10/10/2023 19:14

My retired parents have started referring to over-long sleeves on actresses in adverts and dramas as "vulnerable sleeves", because they seem to be used to signify that childlike retreat into comfort and being a tiny delicate fragile woman of the kind who needs to hold her cocoa with both hands. I can't think of those sleeves any other way now.

AzureBlue99 · 10/10/2023 19:18

Claudia Winkleman @Oldthyme ?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/10/2023 19:21

I give you the Silkfred 'posing with phone with one leg stuck out' pose and 'posing with phone while desperately needing a pee' pose

These are photoshopped very badly

I know exactly what they mean! I've thought similar.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/10/2023 19:26

I BET they scream when they meet their friends.

MakemineaGandT · 10/10/2023 19:26

Also the ‘glancing sideways at someone out of shot whilst crossing the road clutching a cup of coffee’ pose is pretty annoying!

TheLeadbetterLife · 10/10/2023 19:28

It's unsurprising that they have to stare at the ground when they're walking like this. I bet they hit lampposts all the time though.

Is it to make their thighs look thinner too? As well as the paedo-attracting vibe

Menopants · 10/10/2023 19:35

They need good orthotics and a mother snapping ‘stand up straight ‘

'Pick your feet up and stop scuffing your shoes!'

wayyour · 10/10/2023 19:37

Wasn't this what was described also as the 'I'm different, me' kooky pose. Always with the turned in feet.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/10/2023 19:38

Oh yes, 'kooky.' That word much beloved in the 60s to what demonstrate wild-child free spirits they were. Likewise 'zany.'

Menopants · 10/10/2023 19:39

I spent my entire early life being tortured by my mother for this sort of behaviour
