...is the new laughing at salad.

Why do all fashion bloggers insist on postures that express, "sorry for existiiiiing! Aren't I the cutest doormat you've ever seen?"

My Pinterest feed is full of these women.

@Kaill Good grief, it does inspire me to shop at Zara!

But why you would judge women and society as a whole based on 10-15 year old pics from a fashion blog 🤣. And if Pinterest is your only point of reference then I don’t know what to tell you. Maybe create a board full of “mistresses of the universe” from the 80s and take your inspo from there, rather than post think pieces about about pigeon toes and their disastrous consequences for feminism.

This was the indie, Kate moss topshop era when it was all about appearing to not try too hard, hence the understated poses and looking down, etc. It was a trend. It’s really not that deep. Nothing whatsoever to do with wanting a man to be your protector or looking childlike. Have we really not moved on from assuming everything a woman does is to appear attractive to men?

These are just some of the fabulous women I follow on insta. They don’t look scared to take up space to me.

But the one with the red suit looks very uncomfortable with her back arched backwards against the wall. She's also wearing that jacket with nothing on underneath, she'll catch her death Grin

There was someone who posed and photographed men in typical women's fashion poses. It really shows up how ridiculous they are. [[https://www.businessinsider.com/if-men-posed-like-female-american-apparel-models-2013-5?r=US&IR=T
NB It was specifically American Apparel they were looking at, which was notorious for pornified women's poses; but I think you can apply the principle more broadly. I'm sure others have done similar exercises too, I just can't find any.

How It Would Look If Men Posed The Way Female American Apparel Models Do

Vulnerable Sleeves? Yes, I like that. It's where the cuffs of your jumper must reach your knuckles as you tenderly cradle a mug of coffee, yes?

Zara models always look like they're suffering with clinical depression.

efeslight · 11/10/2023 10:33

Also love the laughing at salad and vulnerable sleeves theme, thank you

ShirleyPhallus · 11/10/2023 10:43

I love all of these, but my bug bear is fitness influencers who stand with their back arched, bum pushed back as far as possible, giving illusion of thigh gap and big booty, holding their ponytail high in the air

Yeah, that's the one…

I know what people mean about vulnerable sleeves (great phrase Grin), but I do somewhat envy people whose sleeves are too long; I'm lanky with a small torso and long arms and have to make a choice between sleeves long enough and the torso roomy enough for two of me, and a nicely fitted torso with sleeves halfway up to my elbows.

Horseskeepmesane · 11/10/2023 11:53

I detest this too!!!!!!

The PONYTAIL. It should be illegal.

NashEnquirer · 11/10/2023 12:35

Vulnerable Sleeves is amazing, perfect wording 😂

I would add Maverick Accents (e..g Northern), which is obvious, and Overly Chic Coats to denote senior women perceived as bossy.

lost78300 · 11/10/2023 12:46

I think they use that shot so you don't get distracted by their eyes. Most people when looking at a person look at their face and eyes and not so much the clothes they want you to buy.

Obviously they're sad because there isn't enough petite sized knitwear.

Confused wtf is 'maverick' about having any one of the 'northern' accents?

Zara is the worst for ridiculous poses. My sister and I play “spot the stupid pose” and we text the funniest ones to each other.

Crying laughing here

I really don't know! You'd have to ask any of the TV writers that have relied on them over the years as a shortcut to establishing gruff/maverick/non-establishment/rebellious character outline.

SabrinaThwaite · 11/10/2023 13:25

Zara has nailed it here with both pigeon toes AND vulnerable sleeves.

SabrinaThwaite · 11/10/2023 13:32

And I’m not surprised that some of those Zara models look so depressed - looking at the photo locations I can imagine the conversations going something like:

“Tiggy you get the Paris shoot, Suki you’re off to New York and Lily you’re on the Rome job; did I miss anybody? Alice? Who? Oh, wait, you’ve down for Hayling Island.”

Also “Overweight or Short Haired Best Friend”. Because obviously these physical characteristics make it clear she’s not the main character/love interest.Hmm

I quite like a 'Vulnerable Sleeve' 🤪

Omg that last one of the girl on the sofa is HILARIOUS. That’s just one step removed from a corpse modeling the clothes.

Given you can’t actually see the clothes, some creative type must have said “it’s all about the mood, so make sure you get the Parisian architecture bathed in late afternoon September sun, beige walls with trad moulding, beige sofa. And make her look sooooo over it, all this Parisian nonsense”. All it’s missing is a wisp of cigarette smoke contrasting against the dark denim.

Ah, but do you like a vulnerable sleeve on a slubby oversized ribbed cowl-necked cardy in a tasteful off-beige double-wrapped round yourself with an untied belt of the same material draping elegantly from your sides while you hold a steaming mug of calming herbal tea with both hands as you gaze wistfully at a grey, rain-flecked window thinking about what could have been and wracked with apprehension about a potential upcoming revelation?

Saucery · 11/10/2023 14:22

Oh, the Can’t Cope Cardi! That’s what we call that length of sleeve in our house.

We'd better queue you up some quiet, atmospheric, unobtrusive but somehow faintly ominous music. Would you like some swelling strings with that? I don't think we'd better go as far as solo cello yet, though; things haven't got quite that bad.
