...is the new laughing at salad.

Why do all fashion bloggers insist on postures that express, "sorry for existiiiiing! Aren't I the cutest doormat you've ever seen?"

My Pinterest feed is full of these women.

Zara has nailed it here with both pigeon toes AND vulnerable sleeves.

Oh lord, she looks like she's trying on Mummy's shoes. Except she's having no fun at all.

I often like Zara clothes but I have given up buying online because I can't tell what they look like on normal women who stand up straight.

These are not new though? This pose is very tumblr 2010. It's to highlight their thigh gap

I'm imagining just how far inwards I would have to point my toes in order to get the faintest slither of light through my thigh gap 🤣🫣

Me too. Though I find their website almost unusable generally. It’s like they don’t want to sell anything.

On the slouched over pose - I see it elsewhere too. I just think ‘ah another cropped top you’re trying to disguise!’. Top meets trouser waistband only if you walk like Mrs Overall at all times.

I am so ready for women to look powerful and confident in clothing ads rather than mopey and droopy. As it is, the only happy, confident looking "women" seem to be those in the Snag ads, who are men in tights.

Or those ads with women crouching down wearing Dr Martens.

Slight tangent but AX Paris ads amuse me - this woman's photoshopped lollipop head on loads of their styles

I would add Maverick Accents (e..g Northern)

Confused wtf is 'maverick' about having any one of the 'northern' accents?

There ARE no accents on a photoshoot. It's visual stuff only.

bronkie · 11/10/2023 17:31

There is a particular model that crops up on various sites from Hush to Celtic etc and her grumpy face puts me off the clothes!

I have a northern accent and I think I get what the PP means. It's not those characters who happen to have a northern accent, or the ones who have a northern accent because the whole thing is set in a northern location. It's the ones whose northern accent has clearly been chosen as a shortcut towards characterisation that's intended to communicate something along the lines of "I'm a no-nonsense northern lass, I see what needs doing and I do it, I might come from humble mill-worker stock but underestimate me at your peril, cause I've got a steel-trap mind and a hill-farmer's determination, and I've got where I am today by working up from the bottom, so take me as I come because I say it as I see it and don't take shit from anyone" 🙄

My retired parents have started referring to over-long sleeves on actresses in adverts and dramas as "vulnerable sleeves", because they seem to be used to signify that childlike retreat into comfort and being a tiny delicate fragile woman of the kind who needs to hold her cocoa with both hands. I can't think of those sleeves any other way now.

Natalie Imbruglia was a prime culprit of this back in the 90s!

Kaill · 11/10/2023 17:39

Firstly I don’t see the point of misrepresenting the clothes in photos, because surely you’ll find out when it arrives and just return it? Secondly they clearly know that most people don’t want cropped tops, so instead of trying to hide it why not just design it to be a normal length? Madness.

Josephinehetty · 11/10/2023 17:58

’vulnerable sleeves’ thats brilliant.

Wow, she's got a builder's bum 🧐.

Companies and photographers clearly think that women are idiots. I often look at photos of women online, and imagine men in an equivalent photo (this generally wouldn't happen).

I call those “professional northerners”. People whose entire personality is constructed from being northern.

Paddy McGuiness is a prime example. Gemma Atkinson is as well. “I’m just so normal and northern and down to earth me”

Greeksummer · 11/10/2023 07:54

But why you would judge women and society as a whole based on 10-15 year old pics from a fashion blog 🤣. And if Pinterest is your only point of reference then I don’t know what to tell you. Maybe create a board full of “mistresses of the universe” from the 80s and take your inspo from there, rather than post think pieces about about pigeon toes and their disastrous consequences for feminism.

This was the indie, Kate moss topshop era when it was all about appearing to not try too hard, hence the understated poses and looking down, etc. It was a trend. It’s really not that deep. Nothing whatsoever to do with wanting a man to be your protector or looking childlike. Have we really not moved on from assuming everything a woman does is to appear attractive to men?

These are just some of the fabulous women I follow on insta. They don’t look scared to take up space to me.

I need their handles! @Greeksummer

Vernon Kay
I think he's contractually obliged to mention that his dad was a lorry driver at least 3 times per show.....which is a bit tedious if you listen to his show regularly!

There was someone who posed and photographed men in typical women's fashion poses. It really shows up how ridiculous they are. [[https://www.businessinsider.com/if-men-posed-like-female-american-apparel-models-2013-5?r=US&IR=T
NB It was specifically American Apparel they were looking at, which was notorious for pornified women's poses; but I think you can apply the principle more broadly. I'm sure others have done similar exercises too, I just can't find any.

This is terrible

oh so true. I went on a bus to school across the county and four schools used it. All the girls from the private girl’s school had grey jumpers and all had ‘vulnerable sleeves’. I always think of this when I see them. Posh girl. Sorry for judging - I hate that but it was an observation

Zara is the worst for ridiculous poses. My sister and I play “spot the stupid pose” and we text the funniest ones to each other.

You are surely having us on with these.

Confused has she just had a 'wild wee' in the middle of a beach?

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 11/10/2023 19:39

As others have said it’s to push their hips forward and highlight their thigh gap.

I am guilt of vulnerable sleeves in real life 😵. But that’s because I’ve lost weight, all my clothes are too big for me and I can’t afford new ones 😂. Plus I’m autistic and fiddle with the loose threads on the inside of the cuff.

Well with the elasticated waist it's ideal for anyone who gets caught short on the beach....

I might have hallucinated this when I had COVID but I'm fairly sure there's an image of a Zara model squatting, yes actually squatting, on top of a cooker.
