Why why why??? (hair/pics)

I look after it, only blow dry twice a week and use good products, conditioning treatments etc. I have tried everything from salon treatments to expensive brands, from every miracle product under the sun.
But this is my hair texture, it has been this way since I was born, and it wearies me when I am supposed to think it is 'damaged' or shit. It's just my hair. I forgive it for being so arsey and I am about to just give up and go with the wild flow of things, but before i do..

If i leave it to dry naturally I get a mass of fluff, some kinks and a lot of wispy fuzz. It's kind of cool in a 70's top of the pops way, but I always wanted it to shine. Never mind! If i put any kind of oil or serum on it, it goes flat and dull. I have tried rollers, big hair, straightening irons, dyson dryer, heated brush, everything, but I come back to blow drying because it's kinder. Sometimes I don't do anything and wear it in a claw clip, a la french chic Grin

I just wonder, is there anything I can do to mitigate the fuzz. In these pics you see it straight after a soft/medium heat blow dry, after conditioning and elasticiser. I don't wear bobbles and am mindful of pulling. I use a cotton towel to dab dry after washing.
I honestly don't want a keratin treatment, I won't spend that, nor can I stomach curly girl. I have tried that and it is not for me. I prefer my natural fuzzy waves to that. With all due respect please dont recommend it, it works for some and not others.

Colour is natural, no highlights or dyes. I have no idea why it thins at the ends and rarely grows at the front. It hasn't been cut apart from trims for 5 years! I am happy to leave it to air dry as the wave is lovely but the halo of fuzz is still there no matter what I do.

Have you tried a protein treatment on it?
For cheap - Aldi volume conditioner has protein
Bit more ££ K-Pak Liquid Reconstructor for Unisex 10.1 oz Hair Spray, White, (Pack of 1) amzn.eu/d/0RjGUTg

My hair is fluff but I can only deal with it using a modified wavy method
Hair washed and left and hair styled

It's like cotton wool to touch, nothing there at all so I have to use protein conditioners and strong hold styling products that are very lightweight

That is a stunning transformation, if only we could love the 'before' too. I could never achieve that, you are very lucky:)
I will wait patiently for fairy fluff hair to come into fashion like the gothic heroine post on page 2 Grin

@Rubyruby2222 @JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots

A lot of trial and error and realising deep conditioning seems like a good idea and then my hair goes limp and I think this is why I don't bloody do it GrinBlush
Fine hair tends to need more protein

Styling I vary but my simple one is
John Frieda dream curls mousse
Jessicurl spiralicious gel or treluxe gel
I also like curls n clouds volume spray but it's spendy

Op, I have very similar hair type to yours, except mine is more flyaway. I too loved the versatility of long hair and the fact you can stick it in an updo and have an instant classy look. However, as I got older my hair became weaker and weaker and fraying at the ends like yours, alongside a huge amount of hair loss due to peri menopause. I've recently bitten the bullet and had the lot chopped off. It's a collar bone blunt cut, but longer at the front to retain some flick-a-bility and to give shape. I have to say I love it. It's not uber fashionable like a pixie cut etc, because I know my hairs limitations and it couldn't hold that type of style, but it's controllable and thicker looking and date I say it, youthful! I was so hesitant to get the chop but am glad I went for it. What's the worse that can happen - you can just let it grow out of you hate it. I definitely agree with others though, do not go for layers, they offer nothing for our type of hair.

Aye, I am thinking it might be my age. One giveaway is that I keep getting my hairs in my mouth. Sounds gross, but it is like they spray off like confetti, although more must keep growing as it isn't thinned out. It is so fine that going anywhere is a nightmare as even a hood, hat or hairband wont keep it out of my face. I look around at other people and can't believe theirs isnt doing it, aaargh!

I love bobs, I would like one really short like Geraldine Mcewan in 'mapp and lucia' but I know it wouldnt sit silky like that. I also don't suit a fringe. My head teacher at high school had the most gorgeous jaw length bob I have ever seen - slick, straight as a poker and a shiny glowing red.
But I have been there and whilst it peps mine up for a short time, the shit just settles back in. There is nothing worse than a short fuzzy hairdo that I can't pin back.
I think cos i have chopped my hair every few years since being 16 I know mine won't look better. I appreciate many people don't agree though.

Try a smidge if Moroccan oil after your had a blow dry. Will take any strays. Only a teeny bit though

IndianSummer78 · 03/10/2023 01:46

NRFT so apologies if this has already been mentioned. Curly or wavy hair that seems dry and frizzy despite getting plenty of moisture, and has the curl dropping out like this, sometimes isn't dry at all. It could be in need of protein not moisture. You don't need to pay for a special treatment just get a shampoo and conditioner with it in.

mdinbc · 03/10/2023 03:16

OP, you've had lots of good suggestions here, may I also add taking a supplement? I take a collagen supplement, not so much for my hair, but for bone health. plenty of people take it for hair and nail health; though it may take up to 3 moths to see a difference.

emmsyl · 03/10/2023 03:19

I will have to get someone to take the photo for me as it's quite long @justjeansandanicetop Unless I just photograph a section !

emmsyl · 03/10/2023 03:29

I used to dry mine in a tight ponytail which straightened at the root easily.

That's how I always dry mine, as I don't like wave from the root, though it does go that way eventually anyway . I use a silk or satin scrunchie.

I do sometimes wear mine loose but it's quite long and gets in the way so it's usually in a low ponytail, and I'll even keep it tied up until the very last minute so that it stays nice.

babyproblems · 03/10/2023 03:34

I’d try a heatless less curler and jojoba oil or rosemary oil as a treatment once a week. I’d ditch the products and get a silk pillowcase aswell as a silk heatless curler. Heat and chemicals are the devil imo and I find my hair is much happier being washed less, no heat and a good natural treatment. I modelled for L’Oréal when I was young and a top stylist said to me that the natural oils are hydration for your hair, each time you wash it you’re washing them out. I wash my hair once a week since max twice and have long glossy hair that requires v little maintenance. xx

This is great advice - for hair that suits that advice.

But it definitely doesn’t work for everyone / all hair types.

ToughLoveLDN · 03/10/2023 04:28

Your hairs very fine so that’s why it’s quite weightless and fly away. the shortness around the front is probably from tying it back all the time, the tension is breaking the hairs. Have you thought about doing some highlights? Bleach can swell the hair and make it feel/look thicker. When you blow dry do you point the air downwards to smooth the cuticle?

K18 is absolutely amazing! It’s a leave in mask ! Shampoo do not condition then apply small amount throu hair leave for 4 mins then add whatever else u use I like leave in conditioner and heat protectant spray use this 6 consecutive times u shampoo your hair and u will notice a huge difference ! I have my hair and it’s looking more silky now x

K18 left my hair so dry and in bad condition I had to have 3" cut off. It doesn't work for everyone. The Blow-dry Professor did a review and he wasn't that complimentary about it.

Living Proof Triple Bond complex works really well for me.

Ciri · 03/10/2023 05:24

You’re blow drying, using a tight ponytail and braiding. All of those things are going to pull at your hair and break it. Your hair is fine and flyaway but you’re exacerbating the problem by doing all of that and then you end up with lots of bits which are different lengths so that looks worse. Throw age into the mix and it all starts to go wrong.

You need a really good chop. Yes you will lose some length but it will grow back. Pink gillet photo is by far the best look on you. Long isn’t working in this condition

SheSellSeaShells · 03/10/2023 05:40

I have thin fluffy hair too. Drives me potty if it's damp out. I recently discovered color wow products which make my hair look much better, particularly the dream coat spray that keeps it sleeker and stops the fluffy frizz appearing

isthismylifenow · 03/10/2023 06:16

I see it had already been mentioned, but just wanted to say that taking collagen has helped my hair so much. I know people will come along and say it's a huge gimmick, but my hair and nails are so much better for it.

And unfortunately age does play a factor when it comes to hair. I went to a different hairdresser recently, same salon but my hairdresser was I'll. She said oh but you have the most beautiful curls. I thought she was talking to someone else!! I've always had straight fine hair. She showed me the back in the mirror after towel drying. Yip, there were curls.

She started talking about cgm but I'm not all about this, I just want to keep it how I usually have it... Straight.

I have it shorter now and will keep it this length. It isn't like it was when it was shorter 5 years ago as it changed since then and it does look so much healthier now.

Bloody hormones. Messing with our feelings wasn't enough, it has to go mess with hair too.

Tezza1 · 03/10/2023 07:01

My hair was similar to yours in my yoof. Now it's grey with all its accompanying joys and a whole new set of nasty problems.

Anyway, I found Henna worked wonders. It has to be powdered Henna, mixed with water as hot as possible and something acidic like vinegar. Slap it on you hair, wrap it in plastic and then a towel to keep it warm and leave it on for as long as possible- like hours. You can get henna in different colours, so you can work out a combination that suits your fancy. I used 50% brown, 25% red & 25% clear/colourless to bulk it out.

It gave me swishy, bouncy silky hair. It was a combination of soft yet full of body. Sadly I had to stop as I started going grey at a young age and soon had too much grey to use it any longer.

It has to be powdered, not wax or Henna shampoos: I've tried them all. However, be warned, it is a bit of an effort, and I remember my mum saying it was as if I had a dirty nappy on my head.

ThePoshUns · 03/10/2023 07:16

I have waves rather than curls.
The curly girl method was too heavy/ oily for my hair.
I found the Merwave range better. I have moved slightly away from that now and do my own routine but was very helpful to understand my hair.
I now use Cornish seaweed conditioner which is absolutely gorgeous.

MrsRachelDanvers · 03/10/2023 07:24

Try the Bumble and Bumble primer. I got it because of the UV aspect as I have coloured hair but it really helped calm the fuzziness without making it greasy. And drying is the only way to get it smooth-air drying will keep the fuzz. Try using your hands to direct your hair over the side of your head for body and then smoothing with a large round brush-the Tangle Teezer large round brush is great as it doesn’t have scratchy bristles.

LongFaulks · 03/10/2023 07:29

Ooh OP that could be a photo of me a couple of years ago (except you’re thinner than me).

I’m going to be honest (because I had to be honest with myself) with thin fine hair like ours the smooth sleek look without the fine wispy frizz is only achievable care of a hair dresser or lengthy faffing and fart arsing about with products and tools at home. I can achieve it, almost, but have finally come to accept that I’d rather spend my time in the morning doing something different than battling away with the hair that my genes dealt me.

Biggest difference. A blunt bob chop. I spent HOURS on You tube watching videos for solutions for type of hair and honestly getting a bob was the solution. Layers look AWFUL. Just awful. They just accentuate the hair that we do not have. Your fine wispy ends need to go. I’ve experimented with different lengths of bob to find a length that is a compromise between thickness and tie-it-all-up-for-workness. The shorter you go the thicker it looks but I like being able to get all my hair up in one go.
Having a bob makes it easier to blow dry and style if I am going all out for a lovely sleek shiny look.

renthead · 03/10/2023 07:44

One of the issues here is that you've mentioned a couple of times that it's wavy. You'd be much better off embracing the wave, getting a curly cut and ditching the blow dryer and straighteners.

renthead · 03/10/2023 07:51

cyrl_cymru is a fantastic account on Instagram to follow. He posts lots of wavy transformation cuts.

Have you tried JVN Air Dry cream? You only need a small amount and then leave it to air dry. You can also use the cream on dry hair to smooth it out if it needs it.

Yes I love this and the JVN range as well. Helps with the fuzz.

Also loosely pinning hair up to air dry really helps me - stops the fuzz developing

whataweirdo · 03/10/2023 10:00

My hair has the same texture as yours but much much thicker. I'm like Cousin It.

If I blowdried my hair like normal people do, it would come out fluffy like yours.

We have to accept that no product on the market will ever change the texture of our hair.

If you are not willing to embrace the curly girl method, the only thing you can do is learn to style your hair properly with a hairdryer (far too much faff), get some GHDs or even better, the Dyson Airwrap.

Stop looking for a miracle cure because there isn't one. A good cut and heat are what you need.

bubblecity · 03/10/2023 10:22

Not sure if any of these have been suggested as there are quite a few pages to go through but here are a few things that work for me and I have quite frizzy hair.

  1. brush your hair before you wash it, never after. if you must, just use your fingers. brushing after washing it just makes my hair wiry and straight but very fluffy.
  2. rather than using a towel to dry your hair after washing, use a big, old cotton t-shirt. regular terry towels make my hair VERY frizzy.
  3. if I am going to blow-dry it without round brushing it, I will only partially dry it (again, only using fingers to move hair around rather than with a brush) and then once its about half dry, twist it into a bun with a silk scrunchie (or chopsticks or a pen lol) or pull it back in a claw clip (with hair down) to let it finish drying, then when its just about dry I just shake it loose
  4. I really love Davines hair products, especially their OI shampoo and conditioner - there's also a hair oil in that line that I've never tried but have heard good things about. It's expensive stuff but worth it IMO.

I tend not to use a lot of products after washing aside from the occasional hairspray or sea salt spray bc I am prone to greasiness... hope you find something that works!

Shadypaws23 · 03/10/2023 10:25

Forgot to say I always use a silk pillowcase too which makes a big difference for me
