Why why why??? (hair/pics)

I look after it, only blow dry twice a week and use good products, conditioning treatments etc. I have tried everything from salon treatments to expensive brands, from every miracle product under the sun.
But this is my hair texture, it has been this way since I was born, and it wearies me when I am supposed to think it is 'damaged' or shit. It's just my hair. I forgive it for being so arsey and I am about to just give up and go with the wild flow of things, but before i do..

If i leave it to dry naturally I get a mass of fluff, some kinks and a lot of wispy fuzz. It's kind of cool in a 70's top of the pops way, but I always wanted it to shine. Never mind! If i put any kind of oil or serum on it, it goes flat and dull. I have tried rollers, big hair, straightening irons, dyson dryer, heated brush, everything, but I come back to blow drying because it's kinder. Sometimes I don't do anything and wear it in a claw clip, a la french chic Grin

I just wonder, is there anything I can do to mitigate the fuzz. In these pics you see it straight after a soft/medium heat blow dry, after conditioning and elasticiser. I don't wear bobbles and am mindful of pulling. I use a cotton towel to dab dry after washing.
I honestly don't want a keratin treatment, I won't spend that, nor can I stomach curly girl. I have tried that and it is not for me. I prefer my natural fuzzy waves to that. With all due respect please dont recommend it, it works for some and not others.

Colour is natural, no highlights or dyes. I have no idea why it thins at the ends and rarely grows at the front. It hasn't been cut apart from trims for 5 years! I am happy to leave it to air dry as the wave is lovely but the halo of fuzz is still there no matter what I do.

And following the curly girl girl method, as I think you said you did, wouldn't have been suitable for your hair type.

LeafLife · 02/10/2023 17:47

I have exactly the same hair as you. The thing we have in common, reading your post, is that I also haven’t had my hair cut for about 4 years. I stopped having regular cuts about 10 years ago. I wonder if with the texture hair I have I’ve almost trained my hair not to grow properly by doing that. My hair has always been a fine texture, but was no where near as thin and candy floss in texture as it is now. Maybe regular hair cuts is the way forward for both of us.

MrsRachelDanvers · 02/10/2023 17:50

Actually looking at your photos, I don’t think your face and jaw shape would suit short hair. I’d get it cut in a blunt cut just above collar bone

Lourdes12 · 02/10/2023 17:52

Try this:

When you shampoo your hair focus only on your scalp and let the shampoo rinse through your hair. Do this twice. Then condition your hair, finger comb the conditioner through your hair so you get rid of any dead hair. Then rinse the conditioner out. Let the last rinse be with cooler water.

Use a mircofibre hair wrap. When hair is towel dry (no rubbing on the hair with the towel) apply aragon oil evenly throughout hair but scalp area.

Let your hair air dry or just gently blow dry your scalp but not the rest of your hair. When the hair is dry you can apply a sparse amount of aragon oil to calm frizz down.

Don't wash hair more than twice a week. Use a standard sulfate shampoo and conditioner with silicon such as the Simple range. Regular hair cuts.

emmsyl · 02/10/2023 17:53

I agree @MrsRachelDanvers A good blunt cut above the collar bone would make an enormous difference to the condition. The ends are in really poor shape.

Orangewall · 02/10/2023 17:54

@nutellacrepe hard water makes my hair AWFUL, really considering a softener on the shower.

I have very similar hair OP, I know you’ve had dozens of product recommendations but my friend recently lent me her Phillip Kingsley set with moisture shampoo, pre treatment, conditioner, elastersizer…the works. It was a miracle! My hair was great and manageable and I’m a bit converted 😂 the set she got was on the Look Fantastic site for £45.

Lourdes12 · 02/10/2023 17:55

A blunt hair cut is also good for this type of hair

BasiliskStare · 02/10/2023 17:56

AS some PPs have said - you might not want a bob but if you haven't had it cut in 5 months it is not surprising a bit wispy at the ends. Also some people just naturally have more porous hair ( I have ) . So this type of hair will never look shiny all the the time as those whose hair is not. I would recommend a few decent trims over a shorter time if you don't want a drastically shorter hair cut. That said I think the colour looks lovely I think a blunt cut trying to leave the length as much as you can to give as much weight as you can would help. I find any layers in my hair just increase the frizz - My hair has got thinner over time as I have aged but a blunt cut helps

My advice @TheLastScone for what it is worth

Baaaaaa · 02/10/2023 17:59

I know your hair is straight in the pics but I would say very fine, dry, wavy. Have you tried the curly girl method? No sulphates no silicone.

Recommend wet brush and silk pillow as others have mentioned.

Mine is not a million miles off and I get on very well with garnier hair food.

Airbrush styler smoother really is great for frizz.

emmsyl · 02/10/2023 18:02

I didn't see that OP doesn't like bobs!

I'm not going to give product recommendations because nothing will change the ends, they're ragged and transparent. After 5 years of neglecting a cut it needs to come off. A long bob has been suggested, above collar bone. OP doesn't have very long hair anyway, and it will grow back.

SwedishEdith · 02/10/2023 18:04

I think it needs a good cut. And hairdressers get hair to look smooth through expert blow drying technique. I think, at home, it's too tricky/takes too long to really do it properly so you end up rough drying it too much - which is a problem if your hair tends to go frizzy.

WhichEllie · 02/10/2023 18:05

If your hair used to be heavier but now is like candyfloss I think you also need to take supplements as you may be deficient. How are your nails? I’d at least take biotin and calcium, and also iron if you don’t get enough through your diet. Also make sure you’re eating enough protein.

My hair has really improved since adding a calcium supplement daily. I’m sure my bones appreciate it too!

Beautiful3 · 02/10/2023 18:08

I have very similar hair to you. I bought the dyson air wrap, and traded my beloved shampoo for a sulphate free one. My goodness my hair looks thicker and frizz free. For the first time in years, my hair actually looks lovely.

dejapoo · 02/10/2023 18:13

It hasn't been cut apart from trims for 5 years!

That might be a clue.

TheLastScone · 02/10/2023 18:16

To some degree my hair has always been like this, and I have never been diagnosed with any issues. My nails are fine and my energy levels, diet, etc are great.
It does feel sad to think my hair is so ugly that I must look ill.

I have cut it in to bobs and blunt cuts over the years and the fuzz just follows even when the ends are neater. Never had a cut quite as blunt as emmsyl's comments though! The 'frizz' condition in a previous comment (with picture) is a bit extreme. I have fuzzy, fine hair, it is quite strong, but I have been told that the condition is perfectly fine, just awkward.

Thanks for some great tips. I will look into some of these. Also going to ask how the hairdresser gets it so silky.

It has been cut, it is trimmed regularly, I just haven't had a proper chop. My hair isn't slinking down my back in disgrace due to lack of care.

Folic acid x

TheLastScone · 02/10/2023 18:24

Forgot to mention, the water here is dreadful and makes a massive difference. The worsening does coincide with moving here 5 yrs ago. Who knows!

I travel a lot and get on well with the water in the far north, the frizz is much less visible. We can't currently alter the shower as we are due to move soon but will give it some thought.

I don't think your hair is ugly at all - I think it is pretty and I don't think you or the children in the pictures look ill.

They simply have a hair condition that results in hair that is a beautiful colour but difficult to manage. That is all.

emmsyl · 02/10/2023 18:42

It has been cut, it is trimmed regularly, I just haven't had a proper chop.

We know that @TheLastScone you said so in your OP. It looks like it hasn't had a proper chop in years, because it hasn't. There's really no need to be defensive, people are just trying to help in pointing out the obvious about the ends needing to be cut off.

So the answer is staring you in the face. The ends cannot be salvaged with product, they're ragged, uneven and transparent.

I don't have the issue those children have though, my hair is soft and very easy to comb. I can't even imagine what my pictures did to inspire someone to post that. Perhaps it made someone feel better about themselves for a few seconds.

K18 is absolutely amazing! It’s a leave in mask ! Shampoo do not condition then apply small amount throu hair leave for 4 mins then add whatever else u use I like leave in conditioner and heat protectant spray use this 6 consecutive times u shampoo your hair and u will notice a huge difference ! I have my hair and it’s looking more silky now x

SoftPillowAllNight · 02/10/2023 18:48

Do you use a straightener? It's brilliant for smoothing out frizz. Heat makes all the difference.

I had a feeling you'd bring the word 'defensive' into the conversation. And I agree, everyone else's advice is very helpful, and I appreciate that.

What I also appreciate is how they aren't weighing in a tactless locomotive.

My hair has been cut short countless times and the ragged ends reappear quickly. Since I prefer to wear it up most of the time, and have a fondness for braids, I would prefer to make the best of my lot.

I agree that you need a good few inches off. When the hairdresser cuts into my hair too much it makes my layered ends like yours. I've found blunter ends work better but it's still prone to frizz. I'm finding the OGX biotin and collagen shampoo and conditioner (purple bottles) to be better for my hair.

I don't know why someone posted that uncombable hair post either. Your hair is obviously nothing like that!
