@OftenOrange and @clowniform - sample sales! A loooonngg time ago, early-mid 2000s, I worked in London and earned a comparative pittance. I was also obsessed with Orla Kiely so a group of us from work would go to pretty much every OK sample sale, usually at Truman Brewery. They made OK bags accessible for me and there were brilliant, genuine bargains that bought, loved and used to death.

I also used to go to Ally Capellino sample sales in Shoreditch. I used to take a day off work (I had oodles of annual leave at that particular job) and go in at the crack of Dawn and start queuing. I would usually be in the first 5 in the line! I loved Ally’s bags at that time and again, the sample sale prices were brilliant. She also used to share her sample sales with others too - Jo Gordon knitwear was often there, absolutely gorgeous gloves and scarves.

I did consider going to the Margaret Howell sample sale a couple of months ago but even at 60-80% reduction, the prices are…punchy. And yes, I completely expected to buy something not quite right because of going there with the expectation of buying ‘something’.

faustina · 26/10/2023 13:19

@clowniform - thank you, although my linen robe is a much loved friend, and I would honestly rather have it than anything else!

Sample sales, I find, do have some gems, but lots of non-gems too. I went to a Grenson sample sale once and it was brilliant - I think I bought three huge bags full of shoes for about £100 - it was quite rushed and buy buy buy.

Just before writing this I got an email about a Blundstone sample sale (also Folk, Oliver Spencer and YMC) starting on November 2 which happily coincides with my dental check-up very nearby so I might go to that one, although I am trying to be more mindful with buying stuff nowadays. I'm not sure how to link - hopefully this will work. you have to register:

Thanks for the legging suggestions earlier everyone. I have ordered a pair of the Falke softmerino ones because I know I like the fabric, so will see how they go.
I received a Toast parcel today, with the yak check scarf/shawl. It is a birthday gift for my sister, but I had no idea it was this big (there are no photos of it being worn online, and of course I didn’t look at the size details!). Does anyone have it? How do you make it work? I have tried it on me, and it feels a bit shawl like, and not in a cool way. Any suggestions? Wondering if I should just return, it is beautiful, but my sis might not love it.

Saurus72 · 26/10/2023 14:51

@ScottishMouse I tried last year’s version on but didn’t buy it. If you fold it in half so it’s a big triangle then place it in front of your neck, across the chest. Then pull the two sides around the back of your neck and back around to the front, under the triangle and tie. That looked lovely IIRC.

@faustina The Grenson sample sale sounds like a true extravaganza!

I’ve also had a parcel from Toast today. My olive cashmere/wool wrap arrived and she is an absolute babe. The colour! The softness! The generous size! I fully expect/hope to be wearing it in 20 years when we’re both a bit threadbare and motheaten 😊

@Noeggsontoast I think you asked about the Chup socks? They arrived too and are just so cosy and warm. Not sure if they’re worth £39 but they are very lovely. Toast socks truly are a slippery slope towards bankruptcy.

Thanks @Saurus72 , I will try that. I bought it after seeing an assistant in the Edinburgh store wearing it recently. It looked lovely on her, but I can’t remember how she had it on.

Dee1224 · 26/10/2023 15:33

Lovely socks @Saurus72 and I want that bag @OftenOrange!

I have been vert ‘Toast’ today, in that I wore my linen apron whilst making my Xmas cake. However, I love my apron so much, I spent most of time trying to keep it clean!

Snowyowl78 · 26/10/2023 15:46

I’m not too keen on that orange jumpsuit in the video now, maybe the navy one is more forgiving. I also did not think it looked good with the green cardi

OftenOrange · 26/10/2023 15:47

@Saurus72 Those socks😍I was brought up that if clothing was warm and functional ! quality was paramount ; so I reckon your socks will make a sensible purchase !

Countmeout · 26/10/2023 16:56

Some beautiful purchases.

Agree @Snowyowl78 the green wasn’t great with the orange. I think the navy would look more expensive. The gold dress was beautiful. It was very difficult to see the navy head to toe outfit.

OftenOrange · 26/10/2023 10:41

Post just now , Kate Sheridan Conker Bag
So lovely , and so practical and it smells divine !

That’s a thing on beauty. I’m still on the hunt for a pouch that will take my monster phone. Have tried so many and always disappointed 😢

Stravaig · 26/10/2023 16:58

Another new Live! They're doing a great job on diversity of models recently, height, body shape, age, as well as ethnicity. So helpful in visualising the clothes, worn. Especially love the older models, they always seem to have great posture and bone structure.

(Completely biased bonus points for any and all curls, despite being irrelevant to how clothes fit 🤣

clowniform · 26/10/2023 17:00

Amazing socks @Saurus72 and agree with @OftenOrange if you think in terms of cost per wear.... this is also why I like to skimp when it comes to occasion/formal wear (unlike majority of posters on S&B it seems), would much rather spend on things I can wear all day every day.
But yes totally share memories of loving noughties Ally Capellino, my first grown up bag was one of hers, weird minty veg-tanned leather, brass frame crossbody satchel thingy. Current styles are so meh, what happened there, did she sell up/out?

@faustina I meant an extra robe in addition to your beloved of course! :) Hope you make it to the sample sale if check-up goes well.

@Dee1224 well done you, Christmas cake already!

Stravaig · 26/10/2023 17:06

I'd be interested in any reports on the Mohair Yoke sweater in Marble Green. The listing photos look variously blue or green, and Evie called it blue while holding up a garment that looked green on my screen.

@Stravaig the one I tried was closer to the right-hand (studio) picture. Itchy as hell though.

ilovecherries · 26/10/2023 17:26

We are on the last page! New thread anyone?

Stravaig · 26/10/2023 17:35

@clowniform Thanks, good to know.

Firesideknitting · 26/10/2023 18:17

@Saurus72 stunning socks …. I’ve a very weak spot for socks .. only yesterday got back from a sock spend !! £100 lighter and a few good pairs … was well needed, I’ve been in wellies all day trying to get our birds some reprieve from this awful rain !! We’ve lost one of our quails ( the others have now been brought inside). But a good pair of warm socks is a must outside most of the day

dudsville · 26/10/2023 18:20

Those socks are on my Christmas list @Saurus72 , I saw then in a shop and they felt so soft. Also that jumper @Stravaig and I'm also confused by the colour, and I've pic looks luminous in a way i wouldn't like. Glad to hear it's itchy @clowniform, as it saves me a few pounds!

I've spent the day in the in the alder, with the grey over shirt and falke cosy wool socks when i felt the need for a layer. Weird weather here. Lots of rain but still mild.

Snowyowl78 · 26/10/2023 18:23

@Countmeout it annoyed me they didn’t take the cardi off with the gold dress!
the jumpsuit looked way too long I thought

Countmeout · 26/10/2023 18:29

See you all there

Countmeout · 26/10/2023 18:29

Couldn’t see how many we had to go. Brain dead.

Countmeout · 26/10/2023 18:30
