Old fashioned things you wish would come back

I was just thinking about how much more convenient shopping would be if it became the norm to use a wheelie bag again (commonly used by very old ladies nowadays). Carrying milk and other heavy things in Bags for Life isn't great.

I also think the sun umbrellas would make walking in the sun much more comfortable.

I wear slips under dresses, often I add a tier to give the skirt part some life, so many just hang like tired curtains.
Trolleys. Him-in-the-shed has an old golf trolley, (ex Freecycle) to carry longer stuff for his hobby.

Sending postcards. I used to love receiving a handful every summer, collecting the stamps and putting pins in a map for all the places I got them from.

I've just joined Postcrossing, a site where you send postcards to people around the world and you receive postcards from different people, not the ones you sent your postcards to.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 17/09/2023 15:00

Bustles. I've never had an arse. It's flat and now saggy with it.

PiddleOfPuppies · 17/09/2023 15:02

Men making an effort to dress for going out. The last evening do I went to, a lot of men were in polo shirts and jeans and the women had made a proper effort to wear outfits. It looked as if they were at a different event.

Shops closing on a Sunday . Sunday was family day, a day of rest . We should have followed Germany and kept Sundays as a day of rest .

But then they'd go out of business as anyone who wanted to buy anything would go on to Amazon for one of the busiest shopping days.

Mikimoto · 17/09/2023 15:10

People dressing up at least a BIT for the theatre.
And not leaving 2 minutes before the end to "beat the rush".

ToWhitToWhoo · 17/09/2023 15:10

I don't think that manners and consideration were generally better in the past (etiquette on very formal occasions, perhaps), but there is one form of manners that I wish would come back:

Refraining from asking about, or commenting, on an adult's age.

I would like the whole concept of 'milestone birthdays' to be retired!

KittensandPerverts · 17/09/2023 15:13

I started a thread like this years ago about wheelie trollies!

I came across a puffa dickey in by browsing on Next Christmas last year. Can’t think of the product description but it took me a few seconds to figure out what it was.

I miss it being unacceptable for men to walk shirtless in public.

I saw more shirtless men walking around in the 80s! Agree about it being very offputting, but it's not new!

I'm forever giving out tissues. I buy little packets. Why does noone else carry them

PrinnyPree · 17/09/2023 15:18

House prices relative to a single income... 😅

I have no idea why! No secondary student seems to come with any either, so they constantly need to be supplied with them. I do wonder at parents sending their child into school with a cold, and not one tissue

ToWhitToWhoo · 17/09/2023 15:22

However, I am very glad that overall there is less pressure to dress up. I don't mean that I want to go around in my pyjamas or looking a complete mess, but as someone with physical co-ordination difficulties, occasions where I have to put a lot of effort into choosing and arranging my clothes are very stressful for me, and ease and comfort are extremely important to me. I used to say that, of the chores associated with a party, I much prefer washing up to dressing up!

I especially cannot manage high heels, and am so glad that these are less expected now.

Hats! Oh, I wish hats would come back.

Slips, aprons and pinafores are so practical.

Gloves. Now they are only worn for sports and in winter. Funny how they didn't become more popular during the pandemic. Could simply have laundered them with masks and the rest of the washing rather than constantly sanitising hands.

I wear both hats and slips regularly! My skin doesn't like lots of sun (hence summer hats), and my head doesn't like the cold (hence winter hats), and I don't feel dressed without a slip. M&S usually has a good variety of slips.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 17/09/2023 15:28

My shopping trolley is brilliant. Purple 4 wheeled one, easy to push as well as pull. Also has a separate compartment on the front for chilled or frozen stuff. It was slightly more expensive though.

maryrosa · 17/09/2023 15:29

When my kids were off sick, we used to listen to Big Toe Books on Radio 7.

Also Sainsbury's used to do a wholemeal pizza base and jars of vegetable puree. It was a quick and easy healthy supper.

Also you used to be able to get brioche rolls with raisons instead of chocolate chips.

AngelinaFibres · 17/09/2023 15:30

People not saying the word fuck or fucking every other word as part of normal conversation. I hadn't heard the f word until I went to secondary school. Now it's everywhere all the time. Some people don't seem to be able to utter one sentence without it including the word. The same goes for 'like'. Stop it ,it's awful.

clowniform · 17/09/2023 11:37

Uniqlo do slips too (Airism)
I hate wheelie bags though, they're a pain in the back to load/unload and all the stuff at the bottom gets squashed.

My mother had one when we were small children. She didn't learn to drive until I was 14. It's very painful when someone else is pulling it, and the little wheels catch your ankle bone. I know this from years if experience.

Jacopo · 17/09/2023 15:37

Waists, on both dresses and people.

ManchesterLu · 17/09/2023 15:43

There's NOTHING stopping you getting a wheelie trolley. My gran has just got one (okay I know she's in her 80s but hear me out) and it's made things MUCH easier for her.

Never avoid doing anything that will improve your life!

All this talk of slips makes me think of lining. I don't want to have to wear an extra layer! I think all outer items of clothing should be able to be worn on their own (for what they cover; clearly a shirt cannot be worn without trousers or a skirt below), which means they must be opaque on their own. Meanwhile, nowadays almost all white tops seem to be see-through - even if it's not quite so light enough that you can see the body clearly, the bra shows through.

Agree!

Nannewnannew · 17/09/2023 16:01

I wish that just sending a Birthday card was restored. Now it’s remembering on the day to send Facebook or Instagram messages and some people like to outdo others with their quirky messages etc.

LimeCheesecake · 17/09/2023 16:02

A lot of the things on here are currently for sale, but not popular. You don’t need to wait for a trend to be provided for you, if enough join in, fashion will change.

go on somewhere like house of bruar and buy yourself a tweed suit and nice hat. https://www.houseofbruar.com/ladies/

(this isn’t cheap, but the traditional approach wasn’t to have a wardrobe full, but a few suits and rotate blouses)

get the slips, suppliers will notice the uptick in sales and improve offering.

use the trolly bag. The younger generation haven’t see the war time generation use them and so many boomers associate them with their parents so don’t use them.

don’t shop on Sundays or Boxing Day.

now I’m in the market for a nice non-woolly winter hat, time to get some ideas. We can bring back the fashion if enough of us do!

Ladieswear - Womens British Country Clothing

Our ladies country clothing range features a wide range of women’s British country clothing that mixes the traditional with the thoroughly modern.

Oh yes slips are a must with lots of dresses, otherwise you can see straight through them!

It's not just that. If a dress isn't lined even if it's not see through it just hangs better with a slip.

What about those working in the hospitality and tourism sectors are they not entitled to have Sundays off as well?

Back in the day, pubs were open till 2pm then closed till 7pm.

None of this open from breakfast till late malarky.

Restaurants the same.

And all would be closed by 10.30pm
