Old fashioned things you wish would come back

I was just thinking about how much more convenient shopping would be if it became the norm to use a wheelie bag again (commonly used by very old ladies nowadays). Carrying milk and other heavy things in Bags for Life isn't great.

I also think the sun umbrellas would make walking in the sun much more comfortable.

Dressing up when you go out to dinner.

Slow fashion. Mending clothes and making them last. Wearing natural fibres - I went in Next yesterday and it was wall to wall polyester as far as the eye could see.

I strayed into Next yesterday and had to recoil in horror due to the sea of red and black crap!😣

QueefofSheena · 17/09/2023 17:21

Those of you with a trolley, do you push or pull them when full? I'm thinking of getting one and walking to the shops more

Britpopbaby · 17/09/2023 17:21

Mittens/ gloves with string on for adults. Did they ever exist for adults?0

As someone with a drawer full of single gloves, I'd buy those!

I've often wondered why Jane Austen-style bonnets have never had a fashion revival. They frame the face beautifully. They come in fine cotton for summer and thick velvet or wool in winter. The cap bit keeps off the rain or the sun. The under-chin tie stops them flying off in high wind. They keep your ears warm. I'd love a velvet bonnet in winter. I'm sure they could be redesigned not to look like we're extras in Pride & Prejudice.

Me too! Hats now are too hot or fall off your head, a bonnet style would be perfect.

However I remember the days before Sunday opening and it made 50% of the weekend a Purgatory of boredom. If it had been so wonderful we wouldn't have changed it.

Have been enjoying this thread and agreeing with lots of things!

Thought I'd share this company which I found a couple of years ago when searching for front-opening bras for my late mum. They are a family company which make and sell a lot of traditional items, many in cotton. You'll find slips, nice nighties and even traditional suspender belts here!

I also noticed on the Slips page that they offer an Alteration/Special Made service!! 😀

I've never heard of "Dickies" but The Assembly Line have a pattern for what I think is a modern version - mock shirt? So they are around. I might make one.

Dickeys are brilliant, I have posted on another thread on these coincidentally. They are just so useful for layering without bulk. Do have a go making one, they are quick and easy to make no fitting required.

They have a long history too, the Victorians called them 'chemisettes'. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemisette . They date from times when people had much fewer clothes and used them to vary their looks. Most people have forgotten just how useful they are

I think children’s clothes were better in the 80’s.. I remember practical stuff and lots of bright colours.. not so much little kids (girls especially) dressed in adult fashions.

Shops not opening 24 hrs a day.

After an hour wading through the horror of this winters footwear shoes and ankle boots a sea of black with recycled tyres purporting to be soles.

I'm sticking with what I've got

Brooches, about time they came back in fashion. I wear them on winter coats but I would be good to see them revived.

I saw more shirtless men walking around in the 80s! Agree about it being very offputting, but it's not new!

Yes, that’s true. I did think this when writing the comment. I then don’t remember seeing many men shirtless after that. Football hooliganism quashed maybe? I then spent most of the noughties abroad and it just didn’t happen in the places we lived. No beer culture perhaps.

@ValkyrieAssassin I love that housework apron and what a.brilliant price. I've been trying to order a blue one but when I input it, it keeps changing to pale grey which would be less practical .. fab idea and a lot nicer than a nylon housecoat.

I have a couple of these in linen that I bought from etsy - you can get every colour under the sun. They're fantastic although I do sometimes get a bit tangled up in it when I'm trying to put one on Grin

They are definitely on the way back in! I have quite a few and wear them on the chest pocket or collar of denim or army jackets - get lots of compliments when I do.

Supersimkin2 · 17/09/2023 22:01

Barring compliments, it being widely considered rude and shallow to judge or comment on someone’s appearance.

Still is loser behaviour.

echt · 17/09/2023 22:28

Excellent thread.

I'm re-reading The Pursuit of Love at the moment and haver read the entire thread in what I imagine to be Nancy Mitford's voice. (In my head, of course)

Now I think of it, I'm also listening, for the first time, to Agatha Christies novels on audiobook in the car, full of Miss Marple's nostalgia for better days, so this thread has happily chimed with some of her concerns.

Livingtothefull · 17/09/2023 22:29

Brooches are definitely worth a look. There are lots of vintage ones available on Etsy at really good prices, in case they do come back in then now is the time to get them.

And check out dress clips. Most people don't realise they were ever a 'thing'; they are a little like brooches but clip onto a dress, jacket or sweater (usually at the neckline) and can look amazing. Again, they are all over Etsy.

justasking111 · 17/09/2023 23:08

I find the odd brooch in charity shops

Topseyt123 · 18/09/2023 02:22

I have a wheelie shopping trolley. Have had for some years now and I am in my late fifties. I love it. It's so useful and makes life so much easier when picking up stuff from the local shops.

I can't say I miss things like slips under dresses. I always hated the ones I had growing up during the seventies and early eighties. I never saw the point of them and found they would ride up.

I hardly ever wear dresses or skirts though, being a shorts, trousers and jeans person really (what some people might call a scruff, I suppose).

JerryLovesMargo · 18/09/2023 07:19

Mulberry bags the way they were made c. mid 2000s, in lovely thick Darwin leather. Mulberry's golden age, their bags have never been such beautiful quality since.

Actually maybe I don't, I've just bought a gorgeous bnwt Alana on eBay for £70 - it cost £595 in 2006 so god knows what it'd cost if they made them now!

Maireas · 18/09/2023 07:50

I agree with you about Mulberry bags - I'd go earlier, about 1990. I bought one in John Lewis for £25. Beautiful leather, not heavy, I still have it and use it.

ŁadnaPogoda · 18/09/2023 08:40

The fun of going shopping on Oxford Street, when they had lots of department stores and small clothes shops like Richard Shops and Jane Norman, and lots of shoe shops like Lilley and Skinner and Dolcis, instead of loads of cheap luggage and vape shops and money laundering American sweet shops.
