Does the Joe & Sephs popcorn one count? It makes me feel bloody amazing, so I think it must be included!

MidnightMeltdown · 20/09/2023 20:06

What's Poets of Berlin like? Is it very sweet?

It’s not for me- a bit sweet, quite heavy/ heady . Wore off to be nice and warm. I didn’t really get Berlin or David Bowie from it !

HollyGolightly4 · 20/09/2023 21:26

I really, really want the vogue one. I'm justifying it by thinking I'll keep and reuse the drawers every year...

clary · 20/09/2023 21:31

Ooooh my big reason for the Liberty is the fragrance - I love the one in last year’s AC from the same range as the Berlin one, and it lasts so well.

Tho that description kind of appeals to me @Greywhippet so maybe all is good.

MidnightMeltdown · 20/09/2023 21:38

@Greywhippet

I've got to admit, I think part of the reason I wanted it was the Bowie reference! 😂

Housewife2010 · 20/09/2023 22:39

Is it similar to Darling Nikki? I really dislike that. Far too heavy for me. Really like Morning Chess & Dear Polly.

Pinenu · 21/09/2023 09:38

@HollyGolightly4 as you’ll be using it for storage, it makes it very cheap when you think about it. It’s essentially a piece of furniture that comes with lots of beauty products.

Go for it!

YfenniChristie · 21/09/2023 09:44

I've bitten the bullet and bought the Boots Premium calendar. Apparently Selfridge's is being released today so I'm not constantly refreshing the page waiting for it to go live....

Puravida23 · 21/09/2023 10:04

@YfenniChristie I have just watched an unboxing of Selfridges on YouTube if you want to check it out before buying. I thought it looked gorgeous and I am sorely tempted. Especially if you like your perfumes

Thank you. I'll have to look at that. Really want to see the lipstick shades. Can you remember what they are?

Puravida23 · 21/09/2023 11:29

@Housewife2010 there was a pinky Lisa Eldridge lipstick (kitten mischief)
a barely there pink kylie gloss (missed colour) and a Matt red byredo lipstick. I think that was it can’t remember another one

Housewife2010 · 21/09/2023 12:08

Such a quandary. Liberty or Selfridges? Much prefer the Byredo shade in Liberty & it's the product I'm most excited about. I want both! Really hope Selfridges goes on sale this year - last year I got it for half price, but it may not be around that long this year.

YfenniChristie · 21/09/2023 12:43

Oh! It's Kitten Mischief? Well that's disappointing as I already have that in my collection. I'll have to regift that if I manage to get my hands on it.

What time of year did the Selfridges AC get reduced?

Housewife2010

The end of November. It arrived on 30th November - just in time!

MidnightMeltdown · 21/09/2023 13:13

Yeah I got Selfridges half price last year too. I seem to remember that it sold out incredibly quickly once it it was reduced though.

I'm disappointed by kitten mischief. It looks very pale and orangey. I think that this would only suit very pale skin tones.

MidnightMeltdown · 21/09/2023 13:22

I quite like the Byredo shade in Selfridges. It's red, but it looks like a pinkish red, which for me, is better than the orange-red which often shows up in advent calendars

Growlybear83 · 21/09/2023 13:49

I'm more tempted by Selfridges now that I e watched the unboxing, but there's still too much makeup for me. I'll definitely get it if it's reduced.

EachandEveryone · 21/09/2023 15:02

I’m not judging just gobsmacked that people can afford to spend £700 plus on three calendars is it really good value for money?

BakeOffRewatch · 21/09/2023 15:19

@EachandEveryone i think people enjoy opening them and it’s become part of their festive experience. The same way some people spend hundreds decorating their house, a good wreath from a florist is a couple of hundred, you could say the ACs are more value than that? I’ve been following the threads for years, and people sell on the boxes and the products they know they don’t want so it’s not as much expenditure.

I’ve never bought one, because once it actually gets to Christmas season I see other festive specific stuff I want more that I know for sure I will completely use up. Like last year I bought the Hourglass tiger palette that sold out quickly, and I like all the mini festive palettes or caviar sticks you can get in Space Nk from Laura Mercier. I like actually going into Space NK and Liberty (I am a Londoner though) and talking to the assistants and getting product recommendations. I wonder if that’s why they release the ACs earlier and earlier.

I want the vogue one but I won’t even think about purchasing it until mid November. If it sells out, so be it.

Possimpible · 21/09/2023 15:25

@EachandEveryone It depends really, if there are full sizes in the calendars that you would have bought anyway then it can be good value. Personally I wouldn't choose to spend that much on calendars, I have other ways I'd prefer to spend at least half of that, but maybe that's someone's beauty spend for the whole year in which case it's not bad value. Personally I get them for the novelty and fun factor, so even if they're not the best value for money it doesn't bother me. But I've had them three years in a row so the novelty has slightly worn off and I am looking for value now (which is maybe why I'm struggling to pick one)

Peridot1 · 21/09/2023 15:27

@EachandEveryone - I think a lot who buy multiple expensive calendars possibly don’t buy much else in the way of skin care and make up for the rest of the year. And some sell on what they won’t use. Or give as gifts.

I have to say I couldn’t justify more than one expensive one and this year it will be M&S for me! If I succumb to one of the more expensive ones it will be my main Christmas present from DH.

Puravida23 · 21/09/2023 15:32

I think depending on what products you use the advent calanders offer good value . If you use high brand items which often cost around £50/£100 you would only need to have 4 or 5 items you use regularly to be in the advent full size for it to be worth buying the rest just being extra to use/sell.

MidnightMeltdown · 21/09/2023 15:35

EachandEveryone · 21/09/2023 15:02

I’m not judging just gobsmacked that people can afford to spend £700 plus on three calendars is it really good value for money?

I think so. To me, things like cleansers, serums, and moisturisers are essentials that will last me throughout the year.

Many other things like perfumes and candles I would also buy anyway

So why not get these items in a calendar and get lots of other items which are essentially free?

If you are someone who likes to stick to a particular product or brand then I can see that it probably wouldn't be worth it, but I like to try different things.

I'm on a lot of beauty destash groups and you tend to see people reselling items from calendars and boxes - i think for the really hardcore you can get the key products you want cheaply and then just resell the rest. I do resell bits from calendars etc but I don't like the admin of it all so tend to only buy the ones where i'll use the majority.
