Never ever skinny jeans

all the time we have threads about skinny jeans and how everyone just lives them. WTAF? Where do you all live? I have about a twenty million pairs of jeans and have never owned skinnies and never will. (Am 5’9” and size 8 if that matters.) Anyone else?

Seriously people they look ridiculous.

OP posts:

They are mega unflattering and make peoples legs look like carrots. As for Kate Moss…..She’s been making some odd decisions recently, I see her CosMoss ‘wellness’ line has bombed too.

WeWereInParis · 09/09/2023 06:48

WTAF? Where do you all live?

This is such an odd question. As if you have to live in some weird niche place to wear an incredibly ubiquitous style of jeans.

I work in central London and see skinny jeans all the time. Maybe not as many as there used to be, but not so few that I'd be confused by the mere mention of them.

givemeasunnyday · 09/09/2023 06:55

I've never worn a pair either, and I've been around a long time!

TookTheBook · 09/09/2023 07:02

How old are you OP? You're getting a bit of a ribbing here but I have noticed in the last year that skinny jeans are no longer worn by people under 25. Wider jeans seem to be back in. I can't believe you've never seen women over 30, for example, in London wearing skinny jeans. I have for decades.

Jasperdale · 09/09/2023 07:06

I think they are a staple, look smart and can be dressed up or down. However I find them so bloody uncomfortable I rarely wear them!

RampantIvy · 09/09/2023 07:09

LaLoose · 08/09/2023 18:08

I also never see anyone wearing them (central London) or know anyone with any.

So, living in London means that you are a fashion victim better than the rest of us who know nothing about fashion?

Or how about taking the difference in people's lifestyles and regional weather differences into account?

I live in a rainy rural area, and any form of wide leg trousers/jeans are rather impractical on rainy days, especially when tramping through mud.

We don't all live in low rainfall ultra fashionable cities, or look down our noses at other people's fashion choices.

Also this is style and beauty, not fashion and beauty, and some women suit skinny jeans far more than other styles.

Are you walking around with your eyes shut??

Janieforever · 09/09/2023 07:24

I often suspect when people post things like this it’s to try to , oddly, influence, because it’s a style they personally don’t like or don’t suit. So they want them to go out of fashion totally

However, skinny jeans clearly never went out of fashion. Simply for a period other jeans also made an entrance, and folks under 25 do wear them, a lot, my daughter and her mates are proof. Simply now they don’t exclusively wear them.

the comment that no one wears them in central London was nothing short of embarrassing for the poster.many of us either live in central London or work there and are fully aware of the very vast array of clothing choices people make from the millions of people going through it daily 😂

Bobby80 · 09/09/2023 07:27

You don’t see skinny jeans in central London…… I can only think you’ve been locked in the Tower and don’t see daylight either.

Maireas · 09/09/2023 07:30

@RampantIvy - very true, fashion and style are very different things. Some people are absolute slaves to fashion, and don't look good.

mamaduckbone · 09/09/2023 07:32

Where I lived at the time it was like a law had been passed that all women with small children had to wear skinny jeans and a Breton top and ballet flats between about 2008-2012.

The same law was used to bring in floral dirndl dresses for the past few years.

It was like that around here too.

Personally, skinny jeans make my legs look like parsnips so I was relieved when other styles came back around. I don't wear leggings either, except when exercising. Skinny jeans are not the friend of the chunky thigh.

I still see plenty around though, and my svelter-legged friends look great in them.

WhatapityWapiti · 09/09/2023 07:33

How odd, London has a huge Latin American immigrant population and the skinny always has and always will be loved by Latinas.

It feels like there are entire sectors of society that you don’t even register.

morag1234 · 09/09/2023 07:33

Up until around a year ago skinny jeans were at the height of fashion, and had been for absolutely years.

I personally think they look amazing and I'm really sad that they're no longer fashionable (but still wear them on occasion).

You do sound as though you think you are 'better' than others because you've never owned a pair of skinny jeans which is an odd thing to focus on in life.

ShyCity · 09/09/2023 07:34

I’m a Londoner and still see skinny jeans about! They’re not so popular with teens and early 20s who are following the current 90s/Y2K revival, but they haven’t disappeared.

I will definitely still be wearing black skinnies this winter, as they are just such an easy staple for winter. I never suited blue skinnies in the first place, so rarely wore them.

From what I see around me, there has never been such a wide range of jeans styles available, which is great. I regularly see flares, wide-legged, bootcut, straight, slim, skinny, denim cargoes etc. I love it, as you can dress to suit your shape rather than slavishly follow fashion.

jugggugg · 09/09/2023 07:34

ballet shoes are back too!

'I'm tall and skinny and live in London don't you know! It's just you poor fat country types who wear skinny jeans. It's soooo uncool!'

It's like an Austen novel. We will have to go 'to town' to learn the latest fashions.

Fawbs89 · 09/09/2023 07:36

I'm 5ft 7 size 16 and only have skinny jeans age 34 hate rhe fashion for everything baggy its ming and looks ridiculous imo.

I have a good bum and curves and skinny jeans show this off.

Also not one for following fashions just wear what I like and look good in.

Nottodaty · 09/09/2023 07:39

They look ok on me - if I go for other types of jeans they don’t really suit me. I’ve tried all sorts but skinny jeans work for me.

Maybe I’m the only person wearing them , but I don’t judge others or look down at anyone wearing things that I don’t like.

jugggugg · 09/09/2023 07:39

I'm in London & live near a big secondary. Adults & 6th formers still wear skinnies 😱

Divebar2021 · 09/09/2023 07:45

I have to disagree with this comment. I would say it’s been 3 or 4 years. Someone on another thread said that they were a classic and I disagree with that also… they’re ubiquitous but they’re not a classic. A slim / straight leg would be a classic to me. Because this is an endless topic on here I do look very frequently for jean styles and although I do see skinny jeans out and about they’re not necessarily worn by people I think are particularly stylish. Which is fine…. Obviously. People are just getting on with their day. I actually don’t think jeans are themselves that interesting. People I admire on the street are probably not wearing jeans. ( I live in the SE and I don’t see them much in London but I don’t work near a Latina community)

You might find that when people are in town they leave their skinnies in the country.

The baggier silhouette works well in town where there is less mud/country sport. When back in the country people definitely wear skinnies as they fit in wellies, don't drag in the mud, work well with a Barbour etc.

I wouldn't say they aren't in fashion, it just depends if you happen to be back at home in the country or in town.

Case in point. Skinnies in the country, looser fit in town. It's a thing 🥰

Exactly. I've noticed other minority ethnic women favouring this style, you can emphasize an hourglass figure very well by wearing skinnies.

MonikerBing · 09/09/2023 08:00

I think there needs to be a separate skinny jeans topic on Mumsnet.

For my part (also in N London) I haven't seen anyone wearing them yet, but noticed they were back in the shops for autumn this year. I prefer straight jeans.

As an aside, I really like the Kate Moss/Anine Bing clothing.
