Apparently skinny jeans are back 'in'!

All I can say is 'Ha! Ha!'.

I've still got them in my wardrobe. Won't be fairly embarrassed wearing them now. Will also keep on enjoying me wide legs and 'mum' styles.

It made me giggle, though. It seems that as soon as anyone approaching middle aged wearing any particular style happens then a new an opposite style has to occur! 😂 Well, 'Mwhah, ha, ha!It takes me a while to throw stuff away. So I will remain perfectly cutting edge.😁'.

@TooExtraImmatureCheddar At the moment, there are still lots of women and teenagers wearing skinnies - teens aren’t known for being fashion-forward, they’re known for being sheep. I don’t see many student-age women in skinnies, and leggings are still popular but looser joggers are overtaking them.
I guess it depends on the teen. Young teens sure but older teens are way more fashion forward than you suggest. Not that it is fashion forward to wear loose jeans. Skinnies fell out of favour about 10 years ago. I haven't seen any reasonably fashionable teen wearing them around where I live for a long time.

Where you live. They haven't fallen out of favour where I live.
I don't know why I am sticking up for them as I don't own any. I just enjoy pointing out that they are still popular and the shops are full of them.

@RampantIvy

Popular = fashionable

Or have you some (more elitist) definition which employs some sort of authoritative body of people to decide and declare what is fashionable?

Loewe puzzle bags, Goyard totes and Celine anything are fashionable. They aren't popular in the sense of everyone wearing them because frankly most people can't afford them.

Sketchers are popular but they aren't fashionable.

Popular/prevalent/fashionable are not the same

Using your argument does it not mean that fashionable is not the same as in favour then?

Are skinny jeans out of style for 2023?
"Skinny jeans will be a perennial favorite in 2023" according to Vogue. After having been out of fashion for a while, this tight style seems to be catching up among fashion enthusiasts looking to make bold fashion statements.28 Apr 2023

I loved skinnies but I haven't worn them in the last 2years I think. Tapered or straight legs are my favourites at the moment, even supermarkets have got fantastic styles in which makes it accessible. Primark and Supermarkets take inspiration from the catwalks...they provide what they see there and make it accessible in their stores at cheap prices and then that item is in fashion.

RampantIvy · 13/09/2023 07:41

I have always preferred slim straight leg jeans. They are more comfortable and suit me better than skinnies. I wear them even when they aren't in fashion.

@ohboohoo, ah...so yes, to elitist. You have to be pretty privileged to afford much of that kind of stuff.

I am guessing you want an aspirational aspect. But that doesn't have to be actually expensive or so ostentatiously branded.

The way I feel I achieve that aspirational aspect is pretty low cost, just through health and fitness so I look the best version of myself I can manage. It helps me look good in more clothes, I feel. I also coordinate my outfits and look after my clothes so they keep looking at their best.

Not for me they’re not! I’m nearly 6 stone overweight plus can’t remember when I last wore any trousers ( I live in dresses).

meanderingbrook · 13/09/2023 08:00

And unfortunately health and fitness at one point did seem aspirational for me as I did have cancer and was pretty overweight with sciatica few years ago. Thankfully I recovered, overhauled my diet and have been able to run 10k pretty much every day for the last couple of years or so. I'm not at all overweight now and the running together with additional walking, weights and resistance exercises means I am much stronger too. In my 50s I am the same size, weight and shape as I was as a teen in the 80s which is a modern size 8.

@RabbitsRock there's been a plethora of lovely dresses available in recent years. 🙂

I will concede, then, that skinny jeans are deeply unfashionable for the oh so fashionable fashionistas, however, they are still very much in favour and worn everywhere except in fashionable parts of London. Other styles of jeans are also being worn as wells as skinny jeans.

@RampantIvy did you see the quote that @PaulaZackMayo posted a little upthread. They would disagree with you conceding. 😁😉

Yes I did @meanderingbrook.
I was responding to the fashion police on this thread Grin

meanderingbrook · 13/09/2023 08:29

Just been thinking about what is aspirational in society and how fashion links to this.

Aspirational for people usually is so often health, money and youth. So in any combative discussion over what is fashionable it's almost like we play those cards to our strengths. I'm as guilty of this as others with the health and fitness (but I do genuinely feel better). So I am not afraid of body con fashions. Others show off their money through brands and some concentrate on anti ageing skincare HRT.

I’ve never worn anything else! 5 foot 1 and 55kg if I try to wear anything baggy I look like a 5 year old dressing up in my mums clothes or a teenager with a wrinkly face 🤷🏻‍♀️

Coastalcreeksider · 13/09/2023 08:35

I wear jeggings during the winter with boots, they are so comfortable, no zips, no buttons, just pull 'em on. I have about four or five pairs and I live in them during the colder months.

I also have two pairs of straight leg jeans but do prefer the jeggings. I don't care if they are considered old fashioned or out of fashion, at my age comfort will always come first.

PaulaZackMayo · 13/09/2023 08:44

I'm wearing bootleg today.

I'm not a fan of skinny jeans with flat thin heeled shoes or boots on me because I'm top heavy. I'll wear them with my chunky boots.

RampantIvy · 13/09/2023 08:56

I also have a couple of pairs of deeply unfashionable jeggings. Great for wearing with boots in our rainy and muddy winters.

I really don't know why you're getting yourself so worked up OP. I'm addicted to this thread though for the entertainment value so, thanks 🤣

meanderingbrook · 13/09/2023 10:32

@Purplehearts9066, I'm not - this isn't me worked up. 😉
