Apparently skinny jeans are back 'in'!

All I can say is 'Ha! Ha!'.

I've still got them in my wardrobe. Won't be fairly embarrassed wearing them now. Will also keep on enjoying me wide legs and 'mum' styles.

It made me giggle, though. It seems that as soon as anyone approaching middle aged wearing any particular style happens then a new an opposite style has to occur! 😂 Well, 'Mwhah, ha, ha!It takes me a while to throw stuff away. So I will remain perfectly cutting edge.😁'.

Don't want to burst too many bubbles but baggier styles def aren't going away and the skinnier styles that are on-trend for AW 2023 aren't really like those of a few years ago.

I think narrow straight leg jeans that aren't tapered at the ankle are supposed to be a more "fashionable" cut.

Or skinny jeans as part of a more layered look with a balanced/interesting silhouette ie not tight all over & styled with heels but styled with lace up knee boots & a long sharply tailored wool coat

And there have been legging styles on the catwalks too like skin tight combats (um yeah that'll be a no from me)

But more voluminous styles def aren't going away. A currently fashionable cut is the "balloon" style which, I've seen some women look very chic in but I think I'd look like an MC Hammer tribute act myself...!

Either way if you're not bothered about trends does it even matter??

I also feel like it's important to find your own sense of style based on what suits you & your personality.

I AM interested in fashion but I also think it looks kind of desperate and unoriginal to wear head-to-toe trends and change my entire look/throw out clothes based on what I think the youngsters have decided is fashionable now I'm in my 30s especially 🤣

I buy what I know suits me, things that will last, classic and timeless "basics" . I do add a few nods to trends and consider trends in how I style outfits. Lately I'm loving oversized blazers & poplin shirts, chunky hoop earrings and delicate strappy sandals.

But I do feel that the most stylish people I know are those who out together outfits in a creative or cohesive way and have a strong sense of what suits them.

In fact plenty of the trends that end up filtering down into the mainstream were started from street style & people who dress in an original, interesting way.

meanderingbrook · 11/09/2023 13:10

@Purplehearts9066, never said baggier styles were going away. I own a good few myself and love wearing them. I was just pleased that skinnies are again being considered as 'on trend' again because I enjoy wearing them too.

I don't enjoy people on here (so you might imagine they are in RL) sneering, who does?

And the 'Oh they're not the same'...well sod that! I'm capable of dressing them however I see fit. More elitist, 'you don't know anything nonsense!' It's laughable!

Which is what I actually found funny originally. After all the sneering about skinny jeans, on here, then some fashion programme, talks about them being 'back'!

I actually think what happens is we get market saturation of particular styles and the fashion types need to keep it moving in order to keep ahead.

"Don't want to burst too many bubbles..." you've really not because why would I consider you an arbiter of good taste? Over another source or indeed over what I think I suit?

"I think narrow straight leg jeans that aren't tapered at the ankle are supposed to be a more "fashionable" cut."

@Purplehearts9066 and as luck would have it that's what at least a couple of pairs of mine are because they were my son's 14Y+ ones from H&M which he grew out of (he's now at university😂)!

See I don't believe in wasting stuff. Now that should be fashionable!!!

The oldest thing in my wardrobe which I bought from new is 34 years old....(cashmere button up cape).

Calm down love. I think you need to read what I wrote again. I literally said I don't follow many trends and think its important to choose clothes you like first and foremost.

Why so defensive?! Bless

"Don't want to burst too many bubbles but baggier styles def aren't going away and the skinnier styles that are on-trend for AW 2023 aren't really like those of a few years ago."

@Purplehearts9066 your opening statement (above) seems a bit too sneery to me...it can't really be tempered by you saying in passing you don't really follow trends. You don't follow trends but like to assume superior knowledge of them. 🧐

"Calm down love"...is your name Dave?

And "Bless"....now we're in the school yard?

"I think narrow straight leg jeans that aren't tapered at the ankle are supposed to be a more "fashionable" cut."

That describes the jeans I currently own, so I am on trend Grin

VeryStylishShoes · 11/09/2023 21:46

Where I live they briefly disappeared a couple of years ago and then slowly came back. I see a mix now. Same with heels. They went for ages and everyone wore trainers with absolutely everything, but I see more of a mix now.

I like skinnies for practical reasons. I suit flares / bootcut and wideleg but they drag through puddles!

LuckySantangelo35 · 11/09/2023 23:37

@meanderingbrook

skinny jeans are NOT in!

soz

smilesup · 11/09/2023 23:40

They are definitely not back in fashion in my city or in London.
I wear them occasionally and really notice that the only people wearing them are a bit like me (not that fashionable!)

Do you have any links OP?

Seddon · 12/09/2023 00:07

I kept a couple of pairs (black and grey - gloriously high waisted Next ones that hold everything in), after resting for a winter or 2 I look forward to getting them out again and tucking them into tall boots. I do have 'parsnip legs' though, so always wear them with a long coat.

Still love my 7/8 length girlfriend jeans though, they suit my shape better so I wear them with my shorter boots. Either a bit of skin or interesting socks in between, depending on the weather.

meanderingbrook · 12/09/2023 06:38

@Monty27, if you read the thread you will see I have linked.

@LuckySantangelo35, and so you should apologise for lying! (Because they clearly are 'in'! As this thread shows...)

NearlyMonday · 12/09/2023 07:25

For those of us who don’t suit skinnies, I wish there was a workable alternative, so many boots only work when tucked into skinnies

meanderingbrook · 12/09/2023 07:27

@NearlyMonday, there's nearly always of wearing things to suit you. What is your greatest bug bear regarding skinnies?

@meanderingbrook

skinny jeans are NOT in!

But I see so many people wearing them, and the shops are full of them.

I'm not in London. I live somewhere where it rains a lot BTW.

LuckySantangelo35 · 12/09/2023 07:43

@RampantIvy
@meanderingbrook

again, just cos you see a lot of people wearing them doesn’t mean they are in fashion! They’re not! Just accept it and keep wearing your skinnies - it’s fine!

RampantIvy · 12/09/2023 07:48

I don't own any skinny jeans Grin
I don't get the argument that something is "out" when so many people and all the shops haven't got the memo. Who says skinny jeans are out? Who decides?

LuckySantangelo35 · 12/09/2023 07:50

@RampantIvy

its Just the nature of fashion! Things go in and out
🤷‍♀️ it’s just the way it is

RampantIvy · 12/09/2023 07:51

You haven't answered my question though @LuckySantangelo35.
Who are the arbiters of fashion?

And how can you say that something looks dated when most people (where I live) are still wearing said item?

meanderingbrook · 12/09/2023 07:54

"again, just cos you see a lot of people wearing them doesn’t mean they are in fashion! They’re not! Just accept it and keep wearing your skinnies - it’s fine!"

@LuckySantangelo35 the OED defines fashionable as,

"characteristic of, influenced by, or representing a current popular style.
"fashionable clothes""

So if lots of people wear it, it is fashionable by definition....

OP posts:
RampantIvy · 12/09/2023 07:55

Ah, OK. Then skinny jeans are still popular then Grin

meanderingbrook · 12/09/2023 08:03

@RampantIvy

Popular = fashionable

Or have you some (more elitist) definition which employs some sort of authoritative body of people to decide and declare what is fashionable?

OP posts:
RampantIvy · 12/09/2023 08:14

@meanderingbrook I think you should aim that question at the posters who say that skinny jeans are dated. I'm in agreement with you.
