Apparently skinny jeans are back 'in'!

All I can say is 'Ha! Ha!'.

I've still got them in my wardrobe. Won't be fairly embarrassed wearing them now. Will also keep on enjoying me wide legs and 'mum' styles.

It made me giggle, though. It seems that as soon as anyone approaching middle aged wearing any particular style happens then a new an opposite style has to occur! 😂 Well, 'Mwhah, ha, ha!It takes me a while to throw stuff away. So I will remain perfectly cutting edge.😁'.

@RampantIvy

theyre just not! Same as bolero jackets and pashminas - they ain’t fashionable but lots of people still wear them and that’s fine ! Same with long uggs, same as lots of things

meanderingbrook · 12/09/2023 08:20

Oops sorry @RampantIvy!

I meant to address my last post @LuckySantangelo35!

I'm beginning to suspect it's more about the people wearing the clothes than the clothes which are 'in fashion'.

If you are the 'right kind' of person then you could wear just about anything and you'd just be 'trend setter'.

Unfortunately, too often, this just seems to be fed by prejudices. So if you are a woman of a certain age or a certain social class people just don't consider anything about you aspirational. Including your clothes...

I suspect you might be onto something there OP.
Maybe there's something in there with the difference between fashionable and stylish.

If you walked through my local town centre you'd be forgiven for thinking that nude coloured stretchy clothing, crop tops, the ghastly cycle shorts in cheap lycra and a face full of make up was fashionable.
If you walked past most school gates at pick up near me you'd probably think that the floral dress, white trainers and denim jacket was fashionable.

The first outfit type I think looks horrible and it might be a trend, but I'd wouldn't say fashionable because to me fashion involves a little bit of personal style and a nod to that season's styles. The first look screams "some influencer wore it so I bought cheap stretchy tat from a super fast fashion retailer regardless of how it looks on me".

The second set of outfits look perfectly nice, but it wouldn't be fashionable to me. It's a nice, safe uniform and has become popular because it's comfortable and practical. Most of the time the way it's styled tends to look a little dated because it was such a popular combination a few years ago.

Skinnies remind me of the second outfit. If styled well they can look great. If styled with a Breton top and ballet flats/ankle boots it's very much a super popular look from a few years ago.

But then I think maybe I'm saying fashionable when I mean stylish.

LuckySantangelo35 · 12/09/2023 09:01

Oh yeah! Breton tops! So glad they’re gone

PaulaZackMayo · 12/09/2023 09:24

I'll only wear my one (new) pair of skinny jeans with chunky boots. I do live in bootleg/flared and slim fit.

I think a lot of women will still wear skinny jeans as they are flattering on many.

I've said before though it is what you wear them with.

PaulaZackMayo · 12/09/2023 09:26

Also if I'm out shopping/walking/camping I'm not going to ne too bothered about if my jeans are top fashion.

On a night out I would pay more attention to my outfit.

flexigirl · 12/09/2023 09:36

Well I've been wearing them since the '80's and still wearing them now . Are these parachute trousers not the in thing ? Or was that so last year ? 😂

I hope you’re not the same OP who said she was going to buy some hooped earrings and made some MNers feel faint by just mentioning the words hoops.

I’m not sure how those MNers would cope if they saw you wearing skinny jeans AND hoops.

the hoop earrings thread was funny.

Some people were so firm on the idea that hoop earrings were always tacky. No opposition to this fact would be entertained.

(I hate skinnies though and think most people are deluded when they say they flatter them)

What even women will good figures?

I'll have to disagree.

Love hooped earrings though.

They are in for me, more because I’m wearing maternity clothes from 2017 and can’t be asked to buy new as now it’s impossible to go into a shop and try on maternity clothes!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 12/09/2023 09:59

Wide-legged jeans and trousers and cargo pants are fashionable, but that doesn’t mean people have stopped wearing skinnies. However, do you not remember that from the moment skinnies came in, every few months there would be an article declaring that flares were back, but it would fizzle out? Skinnies were a major trend for about 10 years. Didn’t stop people trying to push a new shape, but they just kept on going. Eventually the vast majority of women switched to them, even the ones who originally declared that they would never give up bootcut. (Obv some women held out and have never stopped wearing bootcut). That’s what’s happening in reverse now - the tide has turned in favour of wider styles. Mom jeans were a flash in the pan, a way of easing us back to a wider silhouette. Major trends like this aren’t quick - bootcut and flares were in right through from mid-90s to mid-00s.

At the moment, there are still lots of women and teenagers wearing skinnies - teens aren’t known for being fashion-forward, they’re known for being sheep. I don’t see many student-age women in skinnies, and leggings are still popular but looser joggers are overtaking them.

Personally I hate skinnies and a loose top because I’m hourglass - looser jeans and a fitted top are my friends!

some people look good in skinnies, most don't.

just my opinion.

LuckySantangelo35 · 12/09/2023 11:34

A lot of men look pretty shocking in them too!

Chippy4me · 12/09/2023 11:45

I don’t think skinny jeans suit men at all tbh especially super tight ones.

I think skinny jeans look good on a lot of women.

I definitely think they flatter me but I cannot wear wide legs jeans as they just look awful on me.

absolutely.

looks okay on a Strokes physique, less so on a Saracens bod.

LolaSmiles · 12/09/2023 12:22

I think skinnies can be quite forgiving on a range of women's body shapes because they can be styled in many ways.

I really liked high waisted skinny jeans and hated the lower to mid rise ones. I'm sure there's women who'd hate high waist and love mid rise.

As long as the outfit doesn't fall into the trendy ubiquitous uniform trap, I don't think the jeans cut makes that much difference to how stylish an outfit is.

VeryStylishShoes · 12/09/2023 12:28

Skinny jeans are just like leggings to me. They aren't especially flattering (one most people and certainly not a lot of men), but they're comfy and easy to throw on for a walk etc.

I only own one pair of jeans and they're girlfriend cut, but I wear leggings quite a lot on non work days.

Polis · 12/09/2023 12:56

Low rise for me. I only wear them with boots of some description.

I hate high rise anything.

LadyBird1973 · 12/09/2023 14:32

Perception of what looks good can change with time. When skinnies were new, everyone thought that bootcuts were more flattering to most women. Then when bootcuts went through a phase of being very unfashionable, people couldn't remember why they'd liked them in the first place. It was skinnies that we then thought of as looking nice.

I'm short and a bit chunky, but I have good legs and think skinnies suit me more than wide leg jeans. But who knows, that really could just be perception shaped by fashion.

I do know that I still have two pairs of Topshop Jamie's in storage at home - lovely dark green and dark plum. When I've lost enough weight to get back in them comfortably, they are gonna be prised from my cold dead hands before I give them up!

Lilibert456 · 12/09/2023 14:40

Wide leg jeans make me feel, well, wide.

mathanxiety · 12/09/2023 15:29

ohboohoo · 08/09/2023 15:57

Like I've said above, people should wear what they want and I shall be doing exactly that. But I won't delude myself that everything I like is bang on trend. I don't really care if something I wear is 'in' or not but I'll know whether it is in or not and not desperately cling on to the idea that something unfashionable is still the height of fashion just because I like it.

When did you first realise you had the power of mind reading?

bellamountain · 12/09/2023 23:48

I had a browse on Zara the other day as I had my mind on getting some flare style jeans, however, there were SO many skinny jeans to look at. I think they are coming back for sure. I now want some old school Adidas, skinny/slim jeans and a big oversized jumper.

Galiana · 13/09/2023 03:56

C'mon @meanderingbrook. Skinny jeans are absolutely fine.

However you seem bonkersly determined to proclaim that they are 'in fashion' whilst also making it quite clear that you Do Not Care about fashion.

It's cool.
