Do we have a boot thread yet? A/W 2023

Ankle boots are usually my absolute comfort zone but with skinny trousers going out of fashion I'm a bit lost. What boots are we all planning to buy/wear this year, and how do I work wider leg trousers into my autumn wardrobe? I live in a cold and wet part of the UK.

“I live in a cold and wet part of the UK.“

Thanks, that really narrows it down to the whole of the UK.

Why are people being so fecking snarky?! This is S&B, not AIBU. The region I live in is irrelevant so I don't really need to narrow it down, however I'd put money on you living in SE England and not quite understanding how wet and miserable some parts of the UK get. I was adding that for context of why trainers aren't an option 9(+!) months of the year as they'd get soaked. Suede boots also not an option.

And yes, wear skinny jeans if you want. I'm totally confident how to wear skinny jeans with boots, therefore was looking for advice geared towards wider legged trousers. Sheesh

Thank you for those who have used the thread as intended, for positive messages and advice. I was trying to ignore the snarky messages but fs

Wow, apparently someone can’t take a joke

PumpkinSpicedTea · 05/09/2023 08:07

I'm lusting over most of these boots 😂

I've got a variety of jeans - wide, straight and skinny 😂

With black jeans what colour of hoots are best? Black or brown?

KirstenBlest · 05/09/2023 10:26

Any hoots will be just fine @PumpkinSpicedTea . Smile
I'd wear black with black, but brown can look good too.

PumpkinSpicedTea · 05/09/2023 13:27

@KirstenBlest hoots🤣🤣 (when i wrote that it came up hoofs "

I give up 😂 but on the look out for not too expensive flat black ankle boots!

Ahh, no-one was being snarky. It looked like a light-hearted joke about the shit UK weather to me.

Christ what?
It's obviously a joke about the shitty UK summer/weather?
How on earth have you interpreted this as snark?!

CharlotteRumpling · 05/09/2023 15:58

Marking. Is it sad that the ones I have liked most on this thread are the Seasalt ones? 😁I don't like chunky heels either.

tiktokoclock · 05/09/2023 16:16

@OriginalFloorboards if you are a horsey person, Ariat cowboy boots are a good blend of good looking and practical. Love mine.
Some of the others - isabel marant etc, look gorgeous, but not really to wear in the fields!

I want some biker boots... I dunno what to wear them with though. I used to wear them with skinnies and a baggy grungy jumper.

I don't know now - I've been wearing more tweedy/cord wider legs and want boots to go with them. I suspect biker boots are not the answer.

KirstenBlest · 05/09/2023 14:07

@KirstenBlest perfect!!!

KirstenBlest · 06/09/2023 12:16

@artis1 , I'd say that those ones are neither stylish or fashionable, but they might be someone's style.

I think stylish is when the total outfit suits the person and looks great, regardless of what is currently fashionable.

KirstenBlest · 06/09/2023 14:50

I get you @artis1 . 'Classic' usually starts a big argument. Even something like a plain white fitted t-shirt can't be a classic because fashion will have changed and the neck will be wrong, the sleeves will be wrong or the jersey will be wrong. Allegedly.

I'd say DMs were a classic, but they can also be stylish on the right person. I see people wearing them so I guess they must be fairly fashionable.

L4R4CR0FT · 07/09/2023 08:15

Skinny trousers are out of fashion!!? Bugger! Now what do I wear? Back to 90s boot cut jeans?

L4R4CR0FT · 07/09/2023 08:17

I bought some Dr martens. Vondas with red roses embroidered on them. I love them!cost me £100 second hand hand but looked brand new!

Haha OP I live somewhere in the middle but have lived somewhere much wetter. Here the pavements are really uneven so lots of puddles too.

Ive found boots and wide leg trousers - either the trousers are too short with boots they look a bit frumpy or they look good length but then they get really wet with puddles (not quite as bad as the mid 00 emo Jean phase)

or you can tuck them into knee high boots and have dry trousers and feet but look like you are channelling the gestapo or the mid Victorian hunter from Jumanji (depending on the colour).

It’s a shame the days of Hunter wellies are of yore.

CompaniesHouse · 07/09/2023 10:28

are this seasons biker boots mid length? (Is that the right term? Knee height etc). I’ve got some ankle height biker boots that I never got much wear from and wondering if I can still make them work.

Reach9kat · 07/09/2023 10:31

Love these boots 100% wear them with long/midi/mini dresses and skirts

Divebar2021 · 07/09/2023 10:32

I have so many questions…. Where are you all going that you’re outside so much? I walk to the train and then to the office and back again and I might get wet occasionally but it’s not endless or insurmountable. If it was torrential I’d wear my shortee wellies and change. Same with snow ( we don’t get much in the SE in any event). Dog walkers I assume are sorted as are “ watchers of outdoor sports” - so what activities do these boots need to cover?

As an aside trousers are all flavours (although not many skinny ones around.) Wider legs are everywhere but this doesn’t have to be flared or flappy or long. You can get straight legs, tapered /carrot or balloon legs which will likely stop around the ankle or above and this is not frumpy. ( let’s just go with frumpy we all know what that means). You could then do a a nice sock shoe combo or a short boot. You could wear culottes with long boots. There is in fact so much more choice than previous years when trouser were super skinny and the option was ankle boots or tuck them into knee boots.

Reach9kat · 07/09/2023 10:36

Would the m&s boots now look nice with some mom jeans or some other ankle grazing trousers just sitting at the top?

KirstenBlest · 07/09/2023 10:51

@L4R4CR0FT , I've seen someone wear those and they looked great. It might have been you!

CompaniesHouse · 07/09/2023 11:16

@Divebar2021 I walk nearly 4 miles a day on WFH days (school run only) and about 6 miles on office days (school run plus commute). Can’t always get on public transport for my commute so life is easier if I prepare to walk the whole way. Central London so easy and pleasant to do, as long as my feet are dry 😉

The west of Scotland! We're not just getting wet occasionally, I think the fact you're in the SE says a lot. I hate getting wet feet, then you're just sitting slowly drying off with smelly shoes. I don't always work on the same site, sometimes I go places straight from work etc so I don't want to be carrying a change of socks and shoes everywhere. Just going about everyday life I'm outside enough that inappropriate footwear is miserable. It makes more sense just to buy weather-appropriate clothes that also look nice. Dog walking is different, leggings and wellies will do.

I'm early 30s so skinnies have been around my whole adult life (and I was an emo kid before that). I know there are lots of options but I'm finding it hard to adapt!

Anyway, my Dune and & Other Stories boots arrived (chunky mid calf flat boots) but I'm not convinced. Think they're going back

@Divebar2021 , the SE is much drier than some other parts of the UK. I couldn't believe how dry it is in the SE when I moved here.
Having said that, I've been caught in a downpour in London and my waterproof coat was great but the rest of me was completely soaked.

Divebar2021 · 07/09/2023 13:49

*@Possimpible

Do you need to them to be smart or is your general outfit casual?. I don’t actually know why gortex is mainly a feature of outdoor wear and not general wear (although they probably want us having to re-buy every couple of years.)
