What do you think of this dress?

www.hobbs.com/product/scarlett-embroidered-dress/0223-5830-9045L00-NAVY-YELLOW.html

Eloping so just two witnesses in a registry office. I'm 36 and size 10 and same skin shade as the model. I'm not a girly girl so pretty clueless however I have worn navy dresses in the past so know they suit me. Don't want anything too fancy but I do like this.

Also it's on November so thought about a jacket like this?

What do you think? Or any other suggestions for a jacket maybe cheaper 😀 and shoes like the model has on seem ok.

Thanks if you have any thoughts.

Although I do agree with @Flyinggeesei234 about Hobbs, Monsoon, Bombshell etc are quite tired ideas, there are loads of alternatives.

And can I add Nancy Mac to that?

porridgeisbae · 20/08/2023 10:53

I can see how the dress could work, but I don't think the jacket is weddingy at all- how about some sort of shrug/bolero?

But it's your wedding OP- wear what you want, especially if it's not a massively formal do.

MOGMOGMOG85 · 20/08/2023 10:55

Awwww you've bought up fond memories of my lockdown wedding with only parents present. I was 7 months pregnant so didn't want to splash on a dress, plus always abhorred the idea of white (so unflattering, so patriarchal!). I bought a dress from the higher end of the asos website (£40?) Pleated knee length embroidered dress, not one that I'd die for but very flattering, and now because of the memories I love it. I jazzed it up with some gold wedges (£7 from tk maxx- again I wouldn't wear them again but wedges suit me and I wanted some gold), an expensive shawl I picked up in a charity shop years ago- gold and a lighter blue, a tiara from accessorize, naturalistic false eyelashes, and some expensive dior lipstick. I looked gorgeous and spending the day so low key was so beautiful and really honoured our love. It was just at the registry office down the road. We had a takeaway and some prosecco at home, then went out for ice cream. The autumn leaves were falling and we hired a photographer to capture the memory, so she and her daughter joined us for ice cream which was really nice and chilled!

Stupidly we had a big party the following year - hired a village hall and did all the decor, catering etc between us and friends! I bought a floor length designer satin dress and had my hair professionally done. I looked AMAZING but the bigger event was so stressful and almost drove a wedge between me and hubby - such a different vibe! I can't recommend a small romantic wedding enough xx

Stunning dress, definitely wedding worthy

Yes! Trotted out on every wedding thread.

@Flyinggeesei234, most women twice the OP’s age who actually take an interest in style would not choose such an outfit for their wedding.

But weirdly this board is mostly populated by people whose sole interest in clothing is how to cover nakedness for as little money as possible. That’s perfectly fine for them - but it’s so disappointing, on thread after thread, when an OP wants style advice and is invariably directed to Next or Debenhams or cheap nasty faux vintage.

Those little boleros … I know nonagenarians who would laugh themselves to death if presented with such an item to wear in 2023.

I wear clothes from a random variety of stores, and I think suggesting that anyone who wears Debenhams, Next or vintage-style clothing is simply aiming to cover up for as little money as possible is just rude. Clearly that's not the case. People are making genuine suggestions, and denigrating them because they aren't to your taste doesn't improve anyone's day.

Why not just make your own suggestions and let the OP choose what they prefer? Everyone has different styles and going round saying how awful other people's are doesn't change the world for the better.

CapaciousHag · 20/08/2023 13:46

I imagine that everyone wears clothes from a random variety of stores, @Augend23. (I certainly do.) But there’s a sort of miserly philistinism on MN that renders a S&B board a bit pointless. Everyone knows that Next and Debenhams exist, and that one can buy clothes there. But to offer them as the very best option for every important event is frankly beyond my comprehension.

backoffbuster · 20/08/2023 13:49

I think for a November elopement I’d wear something with sleeves. There’s no point in wearing a lovely dress and then covering it up with a jacket all day! I assume you’ll go out for a nice meal once the ceremony is done?

CapaciousHag · 20/08/2023 13:53

Why not just make your own suggestions

You will find photos of my suggestions further up thread …

stayathomer · 20/08/2023 13:56

Beautiful op! Would you do a shawl type thing? (Just mentioning just in case?) Congratulations and best of luck x

NatashaDancing · 20/08/2023 13:58

CapaciousHag did make suggestions (although tbf much as I love Cecilie Bahnsen and Molly Goddard dresses, they probably weren't what the OP was looking for, but at least they offer up possibilities)

I didn't offer specific dresses but suggested searching a number of websites which stock things a bit out of the ordinary and applying a maximum price filter. I wasted a good half hour this morning doing that and discovered at least 2 new brands. Including this one and a Stine Goya dress I've had my eye on for a while.

Lovebirds

The dress is pretty and safe and won't scare the horses but I don't know how anyone can look at and declare it's "a stunning dress".

CapaciousHag · 20/08/2023 14:13

Grin I was careful to say they’re examples of the type of things I might suggest to someone … Or hire for myself. (Though there’s an element of preferring to suggest contemporary online brands rather than just what a poster thinks they want based on what’s available on their High St.)

I’m decades older than the OP, and definitely would choose a staggeringly simple, short ivory tweed thing à la Chanel / Prada for the legal ceremony. And then Cecilie Bahnsen for a messy celebration.

GCAcademic · 20/08/2023 14:35

I’m interested to know where all the people saying they would wear this to the office or a conference work, i.e. in what sector does a densely embroidered dress constitute work wear?

NatashaDancing · 20/08/2023 14:42

I'm 2 and a bit decades older than the OP. I used to wear a lot of Hobbs, both work wear and dressed up about 2 and a bit decades ago. I now only have 1 dress (and that's because it's got greyhounds on it)

Hobbs seems awfully safe these days. Maybe it always was, although, thinking back I tell a lie about what Hobbs I still have. I have deep crushed raspberry pink 100% silk brocade jacket that looks like something out of Versailles. It'll never fit again and there's nothing remotely resembling it on the current Hobbs' website. I also had a purple crushed silk velvet evening coat and a rather fabulous sheer black silk dress with embroidered sequin circles. There's nothing like them on the current site either.

Law, private practice. I'd wear that to the office.

Dress codes have gone out the window unless one is meeting clients in person. If other people can turn up in scruffy jeans and trainers my wearing a conservative, don't frighten the horses dress to work is fine. I've got a couple of jackets and cardigans I'd wear over it. If I owned it, which I probably wouldn't.

@CapaciousHag I think it was you who pointed me towards Klements? I have 2 of the Georgie dresses and wear them to the office.

LoobyDop · 20/08/2023 15:24

The original dress is inoffensive, but that’s a depressingly low bar for your wedding dress. For November, I think I’d look for silk or velvet in the most beautiful colour that works for you. For me that would probably be some kind of deep raspberry pink, but obviously it depends on your colouring. And proper silk velvet that you don’t want to stop touching. Not synthetic.

LuckySantangelo35 · 20/08/2023 16:18

@thisdress1234

no jacket or coat is going to look good with it so for one day suck it up and be a bit cold. You won’t even notice after a few drinks anyway!

heidifrombarnet · 20/08/2023 17:29

The dress with a nice formal jacket - yes! Ultimately, its your wedding day so concentrate on what works for you! Have a lovely day x

Zone2NorthLondon · 20/08/2023 17:46

Beautiful dress. Congratulations and have a super day

katepilar · 20/08/2023 19:24

I think that your dress is lovely and special. Certainly wouldnt consider it a work dress as some posters suggest. Also I find it way nicer and more suitable than any of the dresses PPs have suggested I clicked onto.

Aworldofmyown · 20/08/2023 19:37

It's 'ok' and if you are happy with it that's all that matters.
When you say you're not a girly girl, would you like to be or is it not your style? If the latter then I would go for something else.

Aworldofmyown · 20/08/2023 19:39

I agree with other posters that you are quite young for that style.
