Is this ok to get married in?

What do you think of this dress?

www.hobbs.com/product/scarlett-embroidered-dress/0223-5830-9045L00-NAVY-YELLOW.html

Eloping so just two witnesses in a registry office. I'm 36 and size 10 and same skin shade as the model. I'm not a girly girl so pretty clueless however I have worn navy dresses in the past so know they suit me. Don't want anything too fancy but I do like this.

Also it's on November so thought about a jacket like this?

www.hobbs.com/product/elize-textured-jacket/0123-4505-9045L00-MIDNIGHT-NAVY.html

What do you think? Or any other suggestions for a jacket maybe cheaper 😀 and shoes like the model has on seem ok.

Thanks if you have any thoughts.

Do you love it? (it's very pretty) Then it's perfect to get married in. It's your day. Congratulations!

Crikeyisthatthetime · 21/08/2023 20:36

Ignore the people who don't like the dress, OP. In answer to the question, yes. It's perfectly suitable to get married in. If that's the one you love and feel good in, wear it. That's all that matters. Meanwhile if one of the suggestions here tickles your fancy, give it a whirl!

Not quite sure you understand how a discussion forum works, @Crikeyisthatthetime. Grin

The very first sentence of the OP was:

What do you think of this dress?

Not:

What do you think - but only respond if you like it.

Do you see the difference?

Gosh thank you @CapaciousHag that searing insight has changed my life forever 😁

Have you RTFT?
OP doesn't particularly like the dress. Or the jacket for that matter.

How about this Massimo Dutti jacket?

Is this ok to get married in?
LindaDawn · 21/08/2023 21:53

If you are not a dress girl then wear an outfit that you love and is you to a tee. It doesn’t have to dressy, you could wear jeans if that is more you.

TWmover · 21/08/2023 21:56

I like your dress choice although are you choosing it because you like it or because you think it's 'correct' for the occasion. You say you're not girly but have chosen a floral print, would you usually?
I know someone who got married in navy, not a dissimilar style but plain navy, very Audrey Hepburn like. It looked stunning.
Don't feel you have to depart from your normal preferences to be weddingy, choose something elevated but your style.
If you go for the dress you posted, a faux fur navy shrug might look good with it rather than a jacket

Sorry but that's even worse than the Massimo Dutti jacket.

I agree however that the question of whether OP is choosing it because she likes it or because she thinks it's 'correct' for the occasion is really important. OP has a total budget of around £350. I don't generally like jumpsuits but £350 would get a spectacular one if that's your bag (as long as it's not those godawful Nancy Mac things)

NatashaDancing · 21/08/2023 22:31

Here's an alternative to a dress.

I think this looks fantastic. It's a trousers and top. In November it would need a jacket but a short boxy navy jacket or a slim, long open jacket wouldn't be hard to find.

Not a wedding dress

The first dress is stunning! Good lord.
Also OP I know that fashion isn't your thing but

you can even wear a nice jumpsuit if you prefer.

I think if you have decision paralysis and not sure what is 'fashion;. Searching for 'navy wedding dresses' brings out a lot of results. Of course if you don't really care up to you. but how you search can tailor the results

some lovely ones on Etsy but do check reviews carefully

See the shape of the skirts and materials.. that's what makes it wow IMO

That first dress is lovely and all of those dresses look like they would be more in line with what @thisdress1234 has hinted she might like than some of the more high fashion items suggested. These are all classic and understated. Great suggestions @TWmover

I am just going to suggest one more dress, this would have appealed to 36 year old me who didn't actually get the small wedding she would have liked! This is slightly bridal looking, especially the back. Half afraid at the derision that it might attract given that it is stocked by Next and is polyester. I have a similar dress in dark colours and it hangs well, very flattering on me.

OP don't search "navy wedding dress". Those Etsy ones are horrific.

NatashaDancing · 22/08/2023 00:28

SageRosemary · 21/08/2023 23:20

Each to their own but the OP's, unassuming but pretty dress is far nicer than that.

NatashaDancing · 22/08/2023 00:32

The OP said I do have summer dresses I wear and I am comfy in them as long as they're knee length or shorter. I just don't suit long dresses.
The Lipsy dress is ankle length on the model.

CallItLoneliness · 22/08/2023 06:12

RedDedRedemption · 21/08/2023 18:22

In what sector does it NOT?
Unless your job allows only uniforms and/or business suits. It's cut, material and colour that makes a dress 'professional.'

This particular dress has embroidery of the, shall we say, ageing variety. Professional cut and materials (with round necklines and I'm guessing that's not shiny/leather clubbing or see through fabric). Skirt below the knee and it's not too figure hugging. Dark colours. The embroidery while ivory is muted rather than popping. It's not sequins.

The hint is in the PPs username. I am also an academic, and while I love that dress (OP, you will look fabulous in it, and if you're looking for jacket recommendations I think the fluffy ivory one from Next will make it look more wedding-y AND be comfy), if I showed up to work in it people would ask me where I was going after work. I teach a STEM subject, and connection with my students is really important; I need to dress in a way that feels relatable to them. Dresses are ok, but I would never wear an embroidered dress like that to teach in, because it would feel like I was from a different planet.

Not a wedding dress

Or why not this co-ordinating set, which looks a little more November friendly? They’ve even managed to make a ‘nice little jacket’ look not horrible - the cut of the trousers makes it a really chic outfit. Photo below.

https://mariadelaorden.com/en-gb/collections/new-arrivals/products/will-pants-blue-pattern

Again, I agree there are limitless possibilities for a bride who would rather not wear a dress. For Winter my preference might be an extravagantly cut (à la early Alexander McQueen) pure wool ivory trouser suit, someone else might choose an embroidered Erdem suit, or lilac & Other Stories - or whatever.

Goodness. I hear what you’re saying, @CallItLoneliness, but wonder if that means contemporary students think science only applies to people they find ‘relatable’. Are they not going out into the world to contend with global issues? Will they refuse to apply their skills and knowledge with equal dedication and empathy to people who don’t look and dress exactly as they do?

You might be a teacher of a STEM subject but my goodness you have a very closed mind. Your question about who on earth could wear a dress like this to a workplace was odd enough in itself but the idea that students couldn't relate to you if you wore a pretty dress is bizarre. And a bit patronising both to your students and wearers of pretty dresses.

Lentilweaver · 22/08/2023 08:25

As a non-girly girl, I am all in favour of trouser suits but the one you have suggested @NatashaDancing looks like a clown suit. OP wants to be discreet; wearing head to toe multicolour stripes won't achieve that!

I am not normally so blunt but you have been scathing about other people's picks, so....

No problem with you having an opinion. There have been some horrendous alternative suggestions, particularly if as you say the OP prefers discreet.

Her preference for knee length or shorter has been ignored as well. The Etsy suggestions were dreadful- long, cheap-looking faux glamour and the very opposite of discreet.

First of all if you are a teacher or academic you don't work in an 'office'.
Secondly, if you're an academnic (which I highly doubt, as university students don't ask their academic staff personal questions like that. They are not children) it's really sad that you need to not 'dress prettily' in order to relate to students.

I'm in a highly technical IT role, of the old fashioned kind. Yes, I can even manage physical hardware and set up a server from scratch, network, cabling. I make damn sure that I'm as feminine as possible and when people have assumed that I am not the technical lead they have been very firmly put in their place.

What kind of message are you giving out... that girly clothes don't belong there?

I can see people asking where you're going if they're all male or generally wear boring clothes but really. That dress is fine in the corporate world. Fair enough if your colleagues ask but 'relate to students' is pure bollocks.

NatashaDancing · 22/08/2023 08:53

Sorry I see it was GCAcademic who couldn't comprehend how anyone could wear a dress like this to a workplace or a work conference.

I'm guessing "GC" stands for "gender critical"- if it does, one might have hoped someone claiming to be "gender critical" might have moved on from the trope that a woman can't be clever whilst wearing a pretty dress.
