Is this ok to get married in?

What do you think of this dress?

www.hobbs.com/product/scarlett-embroidered-dress/0223-5830-9045L00-NAVY-YELLOW.html

Eloping so just two witnesses in a registry office. I'm 36 and size 10 and same skin shade as the model. I'm not a girly girl so pretty clueless however I have worn navy dresses in the past so know they suit me. Don't want anything too fancy but I do like this.

Also it's on November so thought about a jacket like this?

www.hobbs.com/product/elize-textured-jacket/0123-4505-9045L00-MIDNIGHT-NAVY.html

What do you think? Or any other suggestions for a jacket maybe cheaper 😀 and shoes like the model has on seem ok.

Thanks if you have any thoughts.

Oh no, not a cardigan 😱 that would spoil a beautiful classy dress. Old people wear cardigans when they can’t put together an outfit.

GirlOfTudor · 19/08/2023 20:40

That's a lovely dress! If you love it and feel comfortable in it, then go for it!
I personally wouldn't bother with a jacket. I got married in England in November and a friend said I'd NEED a jacket. I didn't want one and was fine. I spent no time outside, other than getting in and out of the car, and taking photos.

Personally I wouldn’t wear it.
It is very dark and prob suits an older lady, it also has an informal vibe to it.
As a bride, I’d pick something else.
However, it’s your day and you will wearing it, but you asked for opinions.
congrats btw!

legalalien · 19/08/2023 21:05

To all those who say you need to love your dress - you don’t actually - you need to love your partner and if you look back in 20 years and think - gosh - that dress was horrible - it won’t matter a jot. Assuming you remember the dress or bother to take pictures of it.

It’s the marriage not the wedding that counts.

All the best for the future OP.

You do realise the two aren't mutually exclusive? You can marry the right person and do it wearing a dress that has something a bit special and memorable about it?

OP - you like the dress so crack on but I do find it terribly old-fashioned and drab for a 36 year old, especially with that navy jacket.

Also it's £200 for 100% polyester. As someone said upthread, you can definitely do better for that money.

legalalien · 19/08/2023 21:23

Of course they’re not mutually exclusive. But going with the vibe of what OP says (and with the benefit of hindsight I def have some autistic traits) - OP’s concern seems as much about being seen to do the right thing as being genuinely concerned to be wearing something she really likes, and if so, I wanted to say that it’s OK not to bother - and if not, plenty of advice from people who do care /know about these things. I wasn’t for a moment trying to suggest that people who care about how they look at their wedding somehow value marriage less and if I gave that impression then I apologise.

legalalien · 19/08/2023 21:23

PS I hate polyester.

Jem123456789 · 19/08/2023 21:33

What about this one?
https://www.debenhams.com/product/anna-rose-shantung-jacket_p-2a746fcf-d78d-4ed3-92fa-834f3636b03f
love the little button at the top and looks a little more dressy for a special occasion plus it’s a lot cheaper!
congratulations, have a wonderful day!

Allthecatsandcosyblankets · 19/08/2023 23:32

A white fitted blazer/jacket would be nice

floribunda18 · 20/08/2023 06:01

It's a nice outfit but not very bridal. More like a smart work outfit.

Some more ideas which I think look more bridal but in darker colours:

Is this ok to get married in?
floribunda18 · 20/08/2023 06:13

Then a nice faux fur shrug or velvet bolero would look good.

belcarra · 20/08/2023 07:38

Congrats OP I think your dress is lovely.

How about a navy velvet jacket? I've chosen this for inspiration because its shorter than the blazer style

https://www.vinted.co.uk/items/3318955020-mango-velvet-military-jacket-size-10m-amazing-condition

or a satin coat - this type of thing?

Would you consider suede court shoes? with a little bling?
November may be chilly. https://www.johnlewis.com/phase-eight-jewel-ribbon-suede-court-shoes/navy/p109762498

Have a wonderful day. we had a wedding with 12 people. no family, no fuss and it was perfect - for us.

Mango velvet military jacket, size 10/M, amazing condition

Yes but this is S&B! Of course dress deliberation must take place!

OP I’d say the dress you linked is just ‘OK’, very unremarkable and you’re way too young for this style IMO.

Can you say a little more about colours, dress length etc and get some more suggestions on here? Hobbs, Monsoon, Bombshell etc are quite tired ideas, there are loads of alternatives.

CornishTiger · 20/08/2023 09:08

@thisdress1234 have a look through. Are you totally adverse to white /cream? Monsoon have some lovely knee length bridal wear if you don’t want full length. I didn’t do traditional and got mine from Dolly and dot that might inspire you?

It's a gorgeous dress. I'd probably wear it with a white/ cream pashmina, but whatever you do, you'll look lovely. Have a fabulous day!

I don’t understand S&B any more. The OP is at least 25 years too young for this type of outfit, surely?!

CapaciousHag · 20/08/2023 10:04

@Flyinggeesei234, most women twice the OP’s age who actually take an interest in style would not choose such an outfit for their wedding.

But weirdly this board is mostly populated by people whose sole interest in clothing is how to cover nakedness for as little money as possible. That’s perfectly fine for them - but it’s so disappointing, on thread after thread, when an OP wants style advice and is invariably directed to Next or Debenhams or cheap nasty faux vintage.

Those little boleros … I know nonagenarians who would laugh themselves to death if presented with such an item to wear in 2023.

CapaciousHag · 20/08/2023 10:16

Obviously the OP will look wonderful on her wedding day, whatever she wears.

But people are either disingenuous or actively unobservant if they insist that that dress + a little bolero is the most stylish choice for a 36 year old, size 10 bride.

Boleros and shrugs are back in as per this. Point 4.

Not the ones posted on this thread … Grin

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/08/2023 10:26

Yes @CapaciousHag but op isn’t going for high fashion. It is best in such circumstances to suggest things, which will work for the person, is it not? She has explained she has sensory issues, is comfortable in this dress, so this needs to be factored in. What I suggested upthread isn’t high fashion but will likely fit the brief for comfort and softness.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 20/08/2023 10:28

Wear what you want to, I got married in Jeans and a 'nice too'

I really like the dress, although it is quite summery, even with a jacket. You may change your mind when it gets closer to the time. Also what will you wear on your legs? Might feel a bit chilly, even indoors in November

I agree. I'm so fed up with this idea that a dull and uninteresting outfit is somehow suitable for anyone over 50. I said the dress was pretty. It is- but that's all that can be said it's also very dull.

I wouldn't wear it. If I were looking for a dress to get married in I'd either search brands I already like and /or search Matches, Coggles, Net a Porter, MyTheresa, Liberty and Harvey Nick's, and a couple of local independent shops and filter to my maximum budget. If I found something I'd check the brand out on its own website.
