Is this ok to get married in?

What do you think of this dress?

www.hobbs.com/product/scarlett-embroidered-dress/0223-5830-9045L00-NAVY-YELLOW.html

Eloping so just two witnesses in a registry office. I'm 36 and size 10 and same skin shade as the model. I'm not a girly girl so pretty clueless however I have worn navy dresses in the past so know they suit me. Don't want anything too fancy but I do like this.

Also it's on November so thought about a jacket like this?

What do you think? Or any other suggestions for a jacket maybe cheaper 😀 and shoes like the model has on seem ok.

Thanks if you have any thoughts.

You can do so much better for £200. This dress looks like something an older woman would wear to work in the office. There are plenty of knee length occasion dresses out there.

BlackSwan · 19/08/2023 06:50

It's really boring. Average even as an office dress. Sorry, don't like it.

legalalien · 19/08/2023 07:04

Completely get where you’re
coming from re not being the centre of attention (I had a registry office wedding and a small lunch at a restaurant with close friends afterwards, and there are no official photos - which was all perfect
for me!) I wore a cream trouser suit (less of them around in the early 2000s) but would def have considered your dress as I’m a navy dress person too and would have felt silly waltzing about in a long dress in the daytime).

IkeaHelp · 19/08/2023 07:09

Sorry but it's awful on a normal day, never mind a wedding!

RuthW · 19/08/2023 07:13

It's nice but I'm 55 and would wear it for work with a jacket.

You are young. You are getting married. I think you need something a bit special.

MillWood85 · 19/08/2023 07:15

If you like it, OP, then no one's opinion matters at all.

Have the best day.

tealgate · 19/08/2023 07:16

What about this jacket? Better for November and no worries about matching navy pieces?

I have been browsing at M&S and found this: https://www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-tweed-collarless-short-jacket/p/clp60595589?intid=mobileappppdpshare

Gumptionesque · 19/08/2023 08:46

Gorgeous dress to get married in. I’m also in the smart coat to go over it camp.

My extra suggestion would be, if you have any budget, go and see a milliner and see if they can recreate the flowers on a headband for you.

JacquiG2 · 19/08/2023 08:56

That looks very classy and the jacket is perfect. Have a lovely day, and long life and happiness to you both.

SquishyGloopyBum · 19/08/2023 09:03

I think it's lovely, and not frumpy.

For something special take a look at Nancy Mac.

indyocean · 19/08/2023 09:08

The dress is nice. Fine

Is that the vibe you want?

LlynTegid · 19/08/2023 09:12

Seems suitable to me, yes to wearing a jacket. I secretly admire anyone who has a quiet wedding, someone I worked with years ago did this and is still married 20 plus years later.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 19/08/2023 09:18

Yes it’s lovely, and your wedding sounds amazing.
in November- you could wear ankle boots with it? Probably a mid brown leather? Or knee boots with a small block heel would look good.

VerbenaGirl · 19/08/2023 09:25

The dress is great. How about a little fur shrug to go over it?

Netcam · 19/08/2023 09:36

I got one of these to wear over the dress I got for our very small wedding last year.

It is lovely and she makes a range of colours if you don't want cream. I think something like this is much nicer than a jacket, which looks very formal.

I think the dress is a nice shape and if you like it and it suits you then that's totally fine. My only concern is that personally I wouldn't want to wear polyester on my wedding day as it can feel sticky, but you might be fine with that.

GoldenSpangles · 19/08/2023 09:38

Most of the things suggested here have been on the frumpy side. I'm in my fifties and wouldnt wear them. Who wants to get married in some baggy long sleeved navy dress, a polyester jacket and ankle boots?

You're only mid thirties and a size 10! Just buy a pretty dress or say a dressy cream trouser suit with a silk/satin top underneath and some heels with a nice coat/jacket. I like navy but with the best will in the world it's hardly bridal.

Swanslikeme · 18/08/2023 20:33

This is lovely - just because you are eloping doesn't mean you can't wear a wedding dress.

https://www.monsoon.co.uk/zoey-floral-cape-bridal-dress-1499904612.html

Maybe the OP doesn't want a "wedding dress" ? I didn't elope, I still didn't wear a white dress.

The dress is pretty - the jacket is terrible.

If it were me I'd put the whole budget on a long sleeved dress - OP can wear any coat on top to get to the registry office and just take the top layer off.

Oh goodness no.

IamEarthymama · 19/08/2023 00:11

I think this is beautiful and just the thing for a bride who doesn’t want a traditional look!

Each to their own but that to me is just hideous. The Wolf and Badger and navy Monsoon dresses are awful too.

OP has a potential budget of £350- she could do far better than that.

OP , ditch Hobbs type sites, have a look at Liberty, Matches, Coggles, MyTheresa, Net a Porter. Don't bother getting a jacket - put all the budget on the dress. Don't bother whether it's "wedding suitable" just get the dress you like most for your budget.

JusthereforXmas · 19/08/2023 10:10

Your own wedding?

Where whatever you want, unless theres a religious restriction on your chosen venue etc... then no one gets any say in what you choose.

RubiesandRose · 19/08/2023 10:37

How about this ghost dress? It's Navy but a bit younger than the dress you've chosen.

www.johnlewis.com/ghost-madison-satin-midi-dress/navy/p6379138

Would look lovely with some pale pink flowers (if you're having a bouquet)

CapaciousHag · 19/08/2023 10:39

Gosh, I so envy anyone getting married in the depths of winter. If I were taking someone else shopping for a non-wedding-ish wedding dress these are the kinds of things I’d probably suggest. (One from Kim Hekim, the others via Matches.)

For myself, (with fantasy perfect knees) I’d probably head straight for this, (cutting off the label), or something very similar.

And for both this and the dresses above I’d be looking to hire, rather than buy.
