@Brexile what's normcore? Forgive my ignorance, I'm far from a fashionista!

Shapeless blue jeans, shapeless button-down shirts, anorak type jackets, big white trainers. Stuff your Boomer dad wears, and now you're peed off that he's inadvertently fashionable and you're not (or is that just me?) 😂

I wouldn't want to ban jeans and T shirts. They are practical when you're taking an old mattress to the tip on a Saturday morning. But they don't really belong in fashion shows or in magazine shoots IMO, at least not as the main attraction. I'm going back to a care work job soon and I want to look at something exciting and aspirational in a fashion magazine, not just "Oh that'll be handy for work." ;)

I agree about the fashion magazines & fashion shows.

I like denim though and it can look good with the right other bits.

I get what you mean now.

@AppleTurnover1000Degrees Denim is fine and can look good, as you say - I'm just bored of every young woman/girl sporting the same pair of pale blue baggy jeans and white trainers. I know we all complain when fashion changes too fast (well I do) but I feel like "proper clothes" are due for a comeback. Proper clothes = tailored garments not made from denim or polyester. I'm not throwing out my jeans though!

GellerYeller · 20/08/2023 12:01

I also have a normcore (male) colleague. Birkenstock clog things, fleece gilets, a mullet and topiary style facial hair… Costs a fortune to look like a 90s geography teacher on a field trip apparently.

I agree with a lot on here but I realised a trend I hate has gone now: cold shoulder tops. I had an irrational dislike of them.

Yes! I loathed those tops and they were everywhere!

Wexone · 20/08/2023 16:28

just been to a nice restaurant there for Sunday lunch. everyone dressed up having a great time with fab food. saw a young girl wearing a fabulous satin skirt witha lovely summer knit
it was fabulous in her everyone at my table admiring it. so simple. then she walked past us to go to the toilet and she was wearing Crocs (not even clean ones ) with white trainers socks. why oh the feck why. ruined a fabulous outfit..this girl.was in her young 20s. every one at my table was like why on earth why ?? it ruined the whole look completely?

They're still out there, lurking! I picked up a lovely top the other day and thank god noticed it had those stupid holes in the shoulders before I bought it.

There was a thread a while ago now and I had mentioned how awful I felt cold shoulder tops were. I was absolutely berated for doing so. They didn’t change my mind……they’re still awful.

@MidnightMeltdown - "High waisted jeans.

Anyone who isn't a size 8 with a flat stomach ends up with a belly like Father Christmas"

Does that mean everyone else outside of the 'size 8 with a flat stomach' shouldn't be wearing jeans? If you're a bit (or a lot) overweight your belly will be hanging over low-rise and mid-rise jeans, rather than being contained inside the jeans. Anyway, Father Christmas has plenty of fans.

Of course not. People can wear what they want. However, if you have excess weight in the stomach area, high waisted jeans will usually emphasise that (unless you wear a long loose fitting top over them)

Especially when you sit down and there's all that thick excess fabric bunched up around the stomach. I just think that they're really unflattering on most people

woodhill · 20/08/2023 17:38

Ooh I hate the lower waisted things as if you crouch down you can get builder's bum

It's the one item of clothing that I don't actually think looks nice on anyone at all. I mean I don't like crop tops, but can see that they look great on some people. I don't like cropped flares but my sister looks amazing in hers etc., but I've never seen a cold shoulder look nice on anyone and think they can spoil an otherwise beautiful outfit.

Yes! How about something Victorian or Edwardian style? Not with the crazy rib-squeezing corsets but the lovely fabrics and designs.

I've never felt comfortable in jeans, I just feel like a slob even though I don't really notice them on anyone else. Slim black jeans are ok (as they look like trousers!), but I couldn't even conceive wearing pale blue jeans.

I can't stand the feeling of polyester and loathe it with a passion. Acrylic is slightly better but I just think, what's the bloody point. Just buy a jumper with wool in it and it will have the added bonus of keeping you warm.

I've been looking for a wool winter coat and pleased to see that fitted tailored overcoats seem to be coming back, rather than the sacks of potatoes in the shops last season.

I look better in my skinny flares than I do midi/maxi anything. I know we are different. I've been wearing floaty non denim shorts today. I'm enjoying clothes more now since I'm middle aged. I think I've worked out what suits me and have more time.

AppleTurnover1000Degrees · 20/08/2023 20:54

I love denim though but I'm not wearing a denim jacket as some of my middle aged friends go for midi dresses with one and the look is just not me even though it looks OK.

AppleTurnover1000Degrees · 20/08/2023 21:26

Also, the PP who hates bright colours would hate me. In summer I love bright clothes and tan really easily. I tone it down in winter.

LadyVorkosigan · 21/08/2023 00:02

Beige. Coral. Pastels. Cropped anything. High waisted dresses that make you look pregnant. Cap sleeves.
