@pictoosh I'm sat in our local and there are a lot of polo shirts here, you would hate it.

I see them everywhere. Went to Tesco earlier and there they are in their smart casual polo shirts...being smart yet casual. Heh.

IDriveMySupernova · 19/08/2023 20:44

I don’t mind the look of polo shirts, it’s the feel. Such a strange texture.

I like chunky boots and always have. I mean DM chunky though, not the ones that look like you’re getting ready to go into space.

That's a good example. Even Brad Pitt looks boring in a polo shirt. If he can't style it out, what hope does your average Joe have?

Struggling to understand how he would look any different in a tee shirt 🤔Don't get me wrong, I love a tee shirt, wear them all the time in summer, but they are not exactly exciting.

Btw, the two men I saw on TV last night were both wearing tight polo shirts.

Threenow · 19/08/2023 21:10

I hate polo shirts and the weird fabric they're made out of makes me shudder. If I could I would burn them all.

Polo shirts, like other clothing, can be made of any fabric.

I never got around to addressing the OP. Surely half-zips are not current fashion - I'm wearing a jersey I've had for many years, it has a half-zip. They've been around forever here.

SocksAndTheCity · 19/08/2023 21:28

@Threenow

Apologies; for the sake of clarity I specifically meant the odd-textured woven cotton that all the (mercifully few) polo shirts I've personally come into contact with have been constructed from. I have yet to encounter one made from silk, leather, fleece, bubble wrap or anything else and I assumed - obviously wrongly - that posters would understand what I was talking about.

All have been unutterably horrible, and they would remain so if they were made from any of the above. To be fair I can't bear to touch polyester fleece either.

Daffodilwoman · 19/08/2023 22:08

Brad Pitt would like much better in a good quality shirt. A quick Google tells me he is 59. The vast majority of 59 year old men do not look like Brad Pitt. If he doesn’t look good in a polo shirt then they absolutely won’t.
I agree that polo shirts are very meh. In fairness young, slim attractive men can make them look ok. Anyone else and they can look scruffy.
For me I like the midi length. It’s practical and I feel comfortable wearing that length. I also wear a lot of knee length dresses. When I was younger I wore much shorter lengths, nowadays I’m too self conscious and worried that I’ll end up flashing my knickers! I do like maxi length but struggle to find the correct length, mostly maxis are too long for me.

SocksAndTheCity · 19/08/2023 22:31

Brad Pitt in a Hawaiian shirt and dodgy leather jacket à la Fight Club would do for me 😀👍

Okay, I realise what you mean now, I was just pointing out that all polo shirts are not made from cotton pique (I think that is the word). I actually do like the ones made of that - we are all so different aren't we?

I love a midi, or a midaxi, and can't wait for spring/summer (I'm in NZ) so I can wear mine again. While I like the look of maxis I don't like wearing them, they are just a bit too long, and I'm sure I would catch my footwear in the hem.

I am so old that when I was at school and we all used to roll our skirts up one girl came to school in a midi and we all thought it was just the weirdest thing to wear (in the 70s). The next year we were all wearing them!

Yetisrus29 · 20/08/2023 07:11

Midi anything. I walk and cycle a lot plus gym 4/5 times a week, so I have toned legs but midi dresses and skirts stop at the widest part of my calfs and just make me look short with stumpy legs and a massive frump.

DuchessOfSausage · 20/08/2023 08:51

@SocksAndTheCity , it's called piqué knit.

They don't suit me either. I've got nice legs but big chest and I'm small. I much prefer knee length on me.

Yep me too. It's an awful length on me. I wouldn't mind but for what seems like years now, midi has been all there bloody is. That or fanny skimming minis to expose my arse in.

SocksAndTheCity · 20/08/2023 09:25

Thank you @Threenow and @DuchessOfSausage . I will add 'pique knit' to my ever-growing list of things that are going up against the wall when the revolution comes 😀

StarlightLady · 20/08/2023 09:32

Can we add “scaffolding bras”?

LolaSmiles · 20/08/2023 09:45

What's a scaffolding bra? Sounds awful

StarlightLady · 20/08/2023 10:50

@LolaSmiles - Sorry, that’s “my speak” for mega push gone bonkers.

Pluffe · 20/08/2023 10:51

RuppyDa · 17/08/2023 19:21

Exactly this . Especially Zara . Love their stuff but seriously Z give options to folk that don’t have washboard stomachs

I have gone from a 6-8 to a 12-14 in recent years and still find 90% of my clothes in Zara. Washboard stomach not necessary!

Brexile · 20/08/2023 10:57

Flouncy sleeves, dowdy normcore, athleisure, and above all the oversized, ill-fitting slobwear ludicrously marketed as "relaxed elegance". Into the bin with it all.

Puffypuffin · 20/08/2023 11:00

@Brexile what's normcore? Forgive my ignorance, I'm far from a fashionista!

Jeans & t-shirts?

They can look great on some people!

BeginningToLookALotLike · 18/08/2023 10:09

I am obviously in the minority here, but I quite like a short, frilly sleeve, as long as the rest of my outfit is more fitted, e.g. skinny jeans.

What I don't like at the moment, especially as a petite woman, is that there is very little else out there if I don't want to buy a boxy top. I shop a lot on eBay for older style tops that are more fitted, but then I run the risk of looking old-fashioned.

You're right.I like those milkmaid dresses from the 70s, where the full sleeves contrasted with a fitted bodice, all in a good sturdy quality cotton (Laura Ashley fabrics for example). But those modern polyester puffy sleeved monstrosities with a shapeless boxy bodice and haphazardly-placed waistline just look like a hastily homemade pantomime dame costume. On anyone, regardless of age or size. Bin! Now!!

I wouldn't want to ban jeans and T shirts. They are practical when you're taking an old mattress to the tip on a Saturday morning. But they don't really belong in fashion shows or in magazine shoots IMO, at least not as the main attraction. I'm going back to a care work job soon and I want to look at something exciting and aspirational in a fashion magazine, not just "Oh that'll be handy for work." ;)
