Well yes. That’s because I think polo shirts are. Mods, Lacoste/ Perry , are old school , golfers are middle aged. Clearly I’m not the only one that thinks this.

You think differently and that’s ok. Which is why I put “ok”. You are allowed a different opinion.

You do know there are some very young golfers. Quite a lot. My friends Daughter is a professional golfer and so is a friend's Son.

Puffypuffin · 19/08/2023 11:27

I also know a young professional golfer (24). Mind you, she could make a bin bag look amazing.

Polo shirts are also quite a 'Mod' look.

I feel there needs to be a spin off thread for those of us who've not only shared the things we hate, but are guilty of wearing some the things others on this thread hate.

I love a good midi as long as it's a proper mid/lower calf length and have buffs for chilly days.

There'll always be something. There's a thread on gold hoop earrings going right now. A staple, a classic, timeless chic, on trend etc...don't care. I hate the things. Just hate the way they look.

We all think we are the arbiters of style and good taste. It doesn't really mean much. I bet if we all shared candid shots of what we're wearing right now...

Me, DH & Teenager are all wearing t-shirts, shorts & trainers so nothing special. I have got 2 small silver hoops in & 3 other ear piercings.

AppleTurnover1000Degrees · 19/08/2023 12:12

I agree we all have our diiferent tastes though.

LolaSmiles · 19/08/2023 12:26

DrSbaitso
I agree with you. We all probably like something that is on someone else's pet hate list.

Maybe there's two types of fashion hate. One is hate on me and don't like the style and the other is thinking the trend itself almost always looks ridiculous.

I can take or leave cropped items as a style, especially when the shops seem to crop everything at the moment with no thought for what it looks like but I can appreciate the trend on other people though when it suits their personal style.

The nude lycra leggings/cycle shorts, especially if they have a scrunch bum fall into the almost universally ridiculous camp to me.

anothergrievingsister · 19/08/2023 13:20

I hate skirt lengths right around the knee: on, just above or just below. They make me feel blah. Mini or midi make a more definite statement.

I am only average height so you would think a midi would be less flattering than something showing more leg but I don’t even think that is true.

@Wexone I hate 'smart casual' too, particularly on men. Polo shirts are the epitome of smart casual...smart casual being some notion of respectability we've cultivated to hold stock by but which ultimately indicates nothing.
Just wear a decent t-shirt ffs, without the fussy pointless collar.

pictoosh · 19/08/2023 13:30

I'm not attracted to men who golf.

That's fair enough. They come different though. They are not clones.

sorry but you can't wear a t-shirt in my office during summer reagradless of how smart it looks..the "pointless coller " lifys the look from casual to smart looking
also then school uniforms would allow t-shirts as apposed to white polo shirt they allow for kids in summer
i actually would classs it as a basic
if polo shirts were not a huge seller then half of ralph Lauren's shops would be empty

AppleTurnover1000Degrees · 19/08/2023 13:41

By teenage lad wore a Ralph Lauren polo shirt with jeans last night to a party.

Also, some fit actors play golf.

AppleTurnover1000Degrees · 19/08/2023 13:42

My*

Wexone · 19/08/2023 13:44

I wouldn't say no to Roger federa wearing a polo shirt below 😗😁

Brad Pitt rocking the polo shirt at Wimbledon recently 👌

I don't mind the midi length on me, I do wear maxi as well but I find it a bit annoying flapping about. I only wear black midi dresses though or possibly a denim skirt. No florals. Floral midis do look a tad frumpy ON ME (not on everyone else) as I have no waist and the overall look just becomes overworked farmer's wife from 1973 and not the cool casual summer trend-setter I'd like to be.

pictoosh · 19/08/2023 13:54

I don't give a toot about smart looking, I hold no stock by it. I don't give a shit about Ralph Lauren's shops. I couldn't care less how much of a huge seller they are either, I don't like them. They're a reflection of society's desire for draconian notions of decency.
Fuck collars on t-shirts. Daft.

pictoosh · 19/08/2023 13:57

The only men who get off with wearing one is those who are forced to do so as part of a work uniform. Otherwise no.

pictoosh · 19/08/2023 14:19

The notion that 'smart' and 'smart casual' = trustworthiness, respectability and a reliable measure of a person's values is facile in the extreme...but we still cling to it don't we?

woodhill · 19/08/2023 14:21

I quite like polo shirts on men

woodhill · 19/08/2023 14:21

And the mid length

DuchessOfSausage · 19/08/2023 14:27

@woodhill , I quite like polo shirts on men. Me too. They only seem to look bad on men who have moobs, and those men aren't going to look great in anything.

I like men to wear a shirt and tie. A friend works in a shop and he wears a polo shirt for work, it suits him.

pictoosh · 19/08/2023 14:32

I accept I'm in the minority on this one but still, my eyes slide past them as a nothing article of clothing.
