Want an actual waterproof coat with a hood for muggy weather.

Have had to resort to my only truly waterproof coat today but it's too warm for this weather. I'm boiling. Is a cagoule really the only option? Are Uniqlo's jackets really not waterproof? I am trying to avoid using an umbrella as carry enough to work as it is

Being stylish would be great but I don't hold out much hope.

@Janesmom I have some of those in my bum bag for dog walking , but have since bought a couple of waxed hats that I wear whether it's raining or not since they keep the sun off my head and face . I can't be doing with brollies when out walking .

Funnily enough, I was thinking about rain hats the other day. I remember ones you used to be able to buy at the chemist, near the till. Sort of concertina folds that you stretched over your head.

Just found this one 😁

I resorted to an unused dog poo bag as a rain hat this morning. Worked really well.

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 04/08/2023 21:17

I bought my emergency rainhoods from Amazon the tie is a bit funny but practiced a bit and they are ok . But took the plunge and bought a couple of waxed hats from Amazon , they are quite good with a good brim for protection from the sun and definitely waterproof , I did also buy a small tin wax to re proof it . I am very happy with my hats so come rain or shine I will wear my hats.

I’ve got a couple of these. Swedish brand. I’ve also got a lap top bag that I adore that they make but I try not to match the bag to the jacket! Loads of different colours. Totally waterproof. I like the longer length styles for work - smarter (I feel) and covers more of my work clothes because I can have long walks.

I bought this very one in beautiful baby blue on a recent soggy trip to Mahon. They are very popular in that warm wet town 😊

ShouldGoToBed · 04/08/2023 22:10

Also the hood is fully adjustable so you can get it to fit just right and it keeps the rain off my glasses.

Gonnawashmymouthout · 04/08/2023 22:13

I have a decent seasalt one that doesn't make me sweaty. But I wish rainmates would come into style

Takeabreather23 · 06/08/2023 18:29

Mine is from joules I think it’s two years old now
no issues love it

gogomoto · 06/08/2023 18:34

Decent waterproof coats will be warm but some have under arm vents. All depends on how waterproof you want, my coat is climb a mountain in torrential rain waterproof but a bit sweaty

BoobsOnTheMoon · 08/08/2023 07:26

Well I bought the Joules one after seeing the recommendations on here and ye gads it's horrific 🤣

I'm a totally normal slightly pear-shaped size 12-14 and it's snug across the shoulders and sleeves to the point where sizing down would be a problem, but MAHOOOOOSIVE from the chest down. Comedy large. It makes me look like a stately galleon coming through. And the Very Shiny silver poppers and zips make it look kinda tacky IRL... Back it goes Sad

Yet another vote for Protected Species.

I’m a short, dumpy, menopausal mess and it’s the only stylish thing I own. I love it. I’ve had mine 2 years, wear it most of the year and it still looks new and feels soft.

ethical, sustainable, female owned company too.

You need goretex. Any brand, but genuine goretex. It will last years

Agree. My Berghaus is about 15 years old and it's just starting to go at the cuffs. The double layer with removable fleece will see you through all seasons.

And if anyone has a Northumberland holiday booked this month, the Barbour factory shop is usually pretty good.

Vettrianofan · 09/08/2023 07:28

Been out in my new Mountain Warehouse cagoule a few times now in the rain and it's a keeper. It's kept me dry, fits well, hood adjusts so that my hair stays bone dry. It's nothing fancy but does the job for dog walks and taking the DC out and about.

pktechgirl · 09/08/2023 08:37

I bought this on recommendation on here in the sale for half price 5 years ago.
I still wear it for any rainy weather

It's light, more waterproof than my showerproof laptop bag and breathable. I walk 40 mins each way to my local station and have walked in utter downpours. My bag will leak at the zip before I get wet wearing this. Additionally the ability to change the hood shape to fit my awkward coconut head makes this a perfect waterproof.

Can I ask which style you have? I’m also a short dumpy menopausal mess and I’ve tried a couple on and they do not work for me!!

I agree, I had to size down and could probably have comfortably gone down another size but the A line shape was so unflattering that I've sent it straight back. I think it was designed for taller people as the waist and the A line shaping were in the wrong place for me, I looked like a sack of spuds with a rope tied round the middle

rileynexttime · 11/08/2023 22:04

Thank you @Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 ,worked perfectly!
