Want an actual waterproof coat with a hood for muggy weather.

Have had to resort to my only truly waterproof coat today but it's too warm for this weather. I'm boiling. Is a cagoule really the only option? Are Uniqlo's jackets really not waterproof? I am trying to avoid using an umbrella as carry enough to work as it is

Being stylish would be great but I don't hold out much hope.

@PickAChew Erm, that’s not a boy🤣

Another vote for protected species. I’ve had mine for 7 years and it’s still going strong. I do like the look of the rains though.

I bought this last week! I also weirdly like a clear plastic jacket.
Pure plastic, so completely waterproof and not heavy or too warm.
Not to everyone's tastes obviously but I like to brighten up a rainy walk!

I like that, it's nice and cheerful, where is it from?

WhiteCatmas · 03/08/2023 07:23

You can re waterproof coats with a special wash by nikwax.

User65412 · 03/08/2023 08:15

@scrivette it's from Brave Soul, I got it through asos. A chap I know that owns a walking gear shop said to me when he saw me wearing it, you can spend all the money you like on complex fabrics and waterproof technology, but there's nothing as waterproofing as pure pvc 😂
I do have 'proper' coats for hiking etc but this is ideal for just keeping me dry out and about!

ginny93 · 03/08/2023 08:29

I have a 2-in-1 from North Ridge - nice fleece inner for winter but you can zip it out to just have a light waterproof (with foldaway hood) for warmer weather. Can't find it online though unfortunately so it must be from a previous season.

scrivette · 03/08/2023 09:02

@User65412 thank you, I will take a look. It looks like it will cheer you up on a rainy miserable day!

iamboudicca · 03/08/2023 09:03

If you want something actually breathable and water proof then I have one of these..

as a sweaty peri menopausal overweight woman in my 40s I went out doing an activity in the rain yesterday afternoon and it was great. Stayed completely dry.

might not win prizes in the fashion stakes but I wouldn’t know!

fiorentina · 03/08/2023 09:30

I have a Protected Species and my friends have Rains and both are v good for wet dog walks etc and look nice!

@iamboudicca, do you have a link?

ACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 03/08/2023 10:01

Thank you. You had me at sweaty and menopausal!
Unfortunately only up to a medium currently available, that would have been ideal for wet rural walks.

Wish I hadn't opened this thread! Off on holiday tomorrow to Scotland armed with trusty Uniqlo Blocktech jacket, which I've had for years and has never let me down. Didn't know about the two-year limit! There's nothing on any label on mine. Maybe the expiry is a new thing...

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 03/08/2023 11:10

lol@herbaceous I order you to go shopping .😂

Iwanderedlonelyasagoat · 03/08/2023 11:16

I've got a rains one and a protected species one (with a hood). I find them both too hot for summer (London) rain and carry an umbrella. Know this is not the answer you want.... I am quite a 'hot' person though. I wear the protected species one in autumn and spring, and in winter sometimes with a Uniqlo gilet underneath it.

My husband is very into waterproofs and has tried to buy me the sort of thing he wears in warm weather which I think involves goretex but I'm just not leaving the house in that unless I'm on a walking holiday.

RustyBear · 03/08/2023 11:26

Another vote for Protected Species - I got mine a few years ago when Mumsnet had a discount. I have the City Walker and it’s completely waterproof, but you stay cool, so it’s ideal for summer rain

No time! And really no need for yet another jacket. Will have to hope the forecast ‘showers’ don’t turn into anything worse. We’re not the types to set off hiking in a downpour.

PriamFarrl · 03/08/2023 11:47

Well I’d never heard of Protected Species but I will have a look at them.

Personally I think a Tillys hat is a worthwhile investment too. I can’t stand wearing a hood.

MillWood85 · 03/08/2023 11:54

I've got a Didriksons navy waterproof, think it was about £100. But worth every penny.

I wear it to work as well as dog walking. Just have to wipe the mud off first Grin

Floisme · 03/08/2023 12:23

Another Protected Species fan here - they've done special offers for Mumsnetters in the past which might explain why there so many of us. (But it also means they've been pretty thoroughly tried and tested.) I've got the mac which, as well as being effective, is smart enough to get me into most places and also lightweight enough to stuff into a bag. The only problem is that I now want the longer trenchcoat too but can't afford it at the moment.

Also Community Clothing do this parka which they describe as 'water resistant' rather than waterproof but it's in British Millerain fabric which suggests it'll be good. I've not seen it in real life though.

Totally agree with you about umbrellas - useless, rubbish invention, the last time I owned one I left it in a litter bin even though I was only halfway home.

Fourmagpies · 03/08/2023 12:35

Another one for Protected Species. I have two and love them. They look stylish as well. I have just bought the longer lightweight one and it's almost too good for dog walking!

How do you know when Mumsnet does offers? I have Ad blocker on usually - am I missing out on things?

Floisme · 03/08/2023 12:47

I think MNHQ posted about it on Style and Beauty ILikeDinosaurs - there was a long thread about it at the time. I guess they might put it on the shopping thread now?

Also if you register your email with Protected Species, they occasionally send you discount offers. They sent me one for the trenchcoat recently but I couldn't justify if as the mac's still going strong!
