Want an actual waterproof coat with a hood for muggy weather.

Have had to resort to my only truly waterproof coat today but it's too warm for this weather. I'm boiling. Is a cagoule really the only option? Are Uniqlo's jackets really not waterproof? I am trying to avoid using an umbrella as carry enough to work as it is

Being stylish would be great but I don't hold out much hope.

Ah thanks @Floisme. I didn't even know there was a shopping thread!

Shufflebumnessie · 03/08/2023 14:10

@HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas they are gorgeous! The most glamourous raincoats I've ever seen, and now I want one too!

@BarbaraofSeville thanks for sharing the link. I think I'm going to try the teal one.

Sea salt have quite a variety not sweaty atall.

Quitelikeacatslife · 03/08/2023 14:24

Another vote for sea salt, genuinely waterproof, I've got one that is a bit parka style , Matt finish

continentallentil · 03/08/2023 14:57

Seasalt do good ones - even if you would never wear seasalt clothes

Check for sales too

Thanks. Are they properly waterproof though? Or waterproof enough to walk 30 minutes in the rain and not get wet?

They are very light shower proof at best. I wore mine in the rain for a twenty minute walk. Was soaked through by the time I got to my destination. I use my lighter weight RAIN Seasalt (it's several years old so don't recall the name, sorry) but it's PROPERLY waterproof and the rain beads off it and runs off it. I've reproofed it successfully myself with tech washing stuff (Nikwax). Similar to this https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/spring-beech-long-waterproof-coat

Spring Beech Waterproof Coat

A long, parka-style coat with an adjustable hood and drawcord waist so you can find your perfect fit. Perfect for layering year-round.

I just got this

Want an actual waterproof coat with a hood for muggy weather.
cannaethink · 03/08/2023 18:25

I’ve got a Uniqlo one, it keeps me dry! Good sized hood!
I went and checked the label, it says it will start to deteriorate after 3 years. The date of manufacture on mine is 2017 and it’s absolutely fine (it’s had plenty use this summer!).

LER83 · 03/08/2023 18:49

I get all my coats from seasalt. All have saved me from torrential downpours! I've got a nice lined smart one which goes with everything and is lightweight (but thicker then a cagoule).

LunaNorth · 03/08/2023 19:41

Those Rainsisters coats are a dream! I’ve been looking for something eveningy but waterproof for decades!

How do you choose, though?

Gnomegnomegnome · 03/08/2023 20:15

I have a Berghaus Gore tex Maitland jacket. Completely waterproof and light.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 03/08/2023 20:23

@Spudlover im only 5ft2”, would that Barbour be ridiculously long on me?

SwedishEdith · 03/08/2023 20:41

Oh, wow, loads more. Thank you. The one I had to use yesterday was a Seasalt parka type one. Ended up carrying it around today as just too warm.

Sorry, can't see who has got the about-to-expire Blocktech but will be a good test to see if that's true. But can see some mixed reviews.

@HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas I’m 5’4 and it’s about knee length if that helps.

That is the most beautiful waterproof coat I've ever seen.

minipie · 04/08/2023 11:46

I’ve looked at the Rainsisters coats before and absolutely love them. However I tend to live in jeans and trainers/clumpy boots in the winter and feel those would spoil the look of the coat! Wonderful if you are a dress and tights person though.

Ditto! I love the black one with the red satin lining - I can imagine myself dramatically swooshing into the office with it on!

savvy7 · 04/08/2023 13:04

Rains good but mine still has that sweaty effect!

Protected Species. Every time. Totally waterproof but soft and with a hood that stays up. I lost my first one but bought another straight away!

Thank you for the recommendation, they look awesome!

blondiepigtails · 04/08/2023 16:25

I have this one from Protected Species. Fully waterproof. Doesn't crease in your bag. Lightweight, stylish. I wanted a summer waterproof that didn't look like I was walking the dog. Several styles to choose from.

I can't stand hooded jackets. I find them really uncomfortable and hate having my visibility restricted.

I found a vintage-style rain bonnet on Etsy and it now pretty much lives in my handbag. Maybe not the most stylish, but if it's raining heavily enough, who cases?
