An opportunity to discuss styling all those clothes we have on temporary loan.

@Stoic123 yes, it sort of creeps up on you. Same with @Dee1224

PretLea · 15/08/2023 20:08

@ilovecherries I’ll happily stick around, thank you, I really do enjoy this thread (though my credit card not so much 🙃).

@Brillenbar47 silhouette is something I have had to consider, and still trying to get the hang of. I’m on the shorter side, so find high waist with a cropped or tucked in top looks best. I always like the tunics, but they just don’t work for me. So interesting you mention the scarves. I always admire them on other people, but have always thought I’d never wear them. I do think it’s a confidence thing for me, so I do hope I’ll get there eventually.

Dee1224 · 15/08/2023 20:08

Yes, I really love my few Toast pieces now - the feel and quality of the tees I have just makes me happy! Looking forward to SM on Friday- I will post some pictures in case anyone wants to do a shop via phone!

@Dee1224 & @Noodle421

Definitely brings out the marmite response in people. I quite enjoy some of the anti-Toast comments on Mumsnet and sometimes even agree with them (but they have the opposite effect on me). My favourite so far has been someone saying Toast clothes are a bit too much "Soviet Librarian" for her.

Grey academia? I'm here for it!

Like @Noodle421 I've embraced the frump from an early age. I initially got into Toast for the Mao suits utilitarian workwear and boxy cuts, like a high street Margaret Howell, when few shops were doing that kind of thing.

So in a sense I can understand why a brand with a fairly strong style identity gets stronger (polarised) responses. It is a bit sad if, internet hyperbole aside, people genuinely couldn't imagine wearing what are ultimately quite ordinary clothes (a charcoal dress that is loose around the waist and hits at mid-calf is hardly farthingales and bound feet). Makes me wonder what their closets and environments are like.

I remember once having a conversation about t-shirts with a friend, and how difficult it was to find exactly the right one and she looked at me blankly and said 'it's just a t-shirt' I don't think we've discussed clothes since 😁

There that tank has popped up , I’m sure some of you could knit it.

That's exactly the same as the jumper from last year or the year before ?
£225 for a vest?
I think that's about what the jumper cost-does anyone remember?
The crinkle dress is nice -I have a plain navy and a check with the same gingham lining already though.

dudsville · 15/08/2023 20:56

I'm loving "soviet librarian" and "is just a tee-shirt"!

I want to start wearing scarves. For some reason i feel they're above my station. So now that I've written that out loud i can see it needs to be challenged. Today i wore some kind of rich brown coloured linen trousers with the blue and ecru checked "lys" style blouse, with a brown very faint check over shirt for when it got to cool. I loved the combo. I should have tucked my top in though - again it felt too fancy for me today. Tomorrow i shall tuck my tops and don a scarf.

Most definitely! That's dead easy

Sooverthemill · 15/08/2023 21:14

@Saurus72 I have 3 things from navy grey. One bought full price and 2 others with a discount or a sample sale ( online). Even as a knitter I think they are excellent , very much essential basic kind of thing but that re done so very well. I have a cocoon funnel neck in beige, a relaxed charcoal round neck and a v neck navy. All worn a lot

Dee1224 · 15/08/2023 21:40

Ooh, I knitted a very similar tank in my knitting phase as a student. Maybe I should have another go!

AmethystMoonShine · 15/08/2023 22:22

@faustina I’ve had similar conversations with others about clothes. I’m surrounded by people that just aren’t interested in clothes beyond preventing nakedness! Grin

dudsville · 16/08/2023 08:28

I was scrolling online this morning through toast's current offerings, nursing the sense of loss that i didn't buy those ecru trousers a lot of you tried, and thought that one thing i appreciate about the sales is that they have several items they restock and put in sales, like the space check linen trousers, the white and blue billowy sleeved blouses, etc., so I'm going to keep my fingers crossed they restock those trousers so i can try them!

Yes there was a jumper like that. Might be 2 years ago. Both a bit too hairy for me.

and there’s a crinkle skirt, https://www.toa.st/products/crinkle-cotton-skirt-black
I like that checked top they show with it, also there’s what looks like a Donegal wool sweater in grey and a grey roll neck pictured with it. I hope they have the roll neck in another colour I might wear, I have a couple of those from 4/5 years ago and really like them.

Our Black Crinkle Cotton Skirt is crafted from textured cotton. It has an elasticated waist and side pockets.

Snowyowl78 · 16/08/2023 09:01

@dudsville they still have the space linen check trousers in stock now but they are full price?

im still holding out for a space linen check shirt, the search continues!

dudsville · 16/08/2023 09:06

I think my post was confusing, i meant to say that i hope they restock the ecru. That i like the way they do this with other items, like the space check.

Countmeout · 16/08/2023 09:26

I think everything turns up in sale eventually @dudsville . Everything. Even things allegedly oos. They seem to discover more in a cupboard.

PretLea · 16/08/2023 09:30

@dudsville I asked on the chat a few weeks ago (after asking them to check stock in stores - nothing!) whether they might have a restock date, and the person suggested I check their website again in 2-3 weeks for it. It’s coming up to 3 weeks now… 🤞

PretLea · 16/08/2023 09:32

I really like the crinkle cotton dress and skirt. But possibly not the black so much. Does the material wash/keep well? And is it quite stiff to wear, or fluid and comfortable?

Saurus72 · 16/08/2023 09:34

I’m inordinately pleased with my Navygrey order - the perfect charcoal jumper, great fit, the kind of piece that you think will be easy to find but for some reason isn’t.

Also v impressive service, delivered this morning less than 24 hours after ordering, wrapped in a cotton bag. All around fabulous!

Could THIS be the Greatest Toast Thread Ever?
Sooverthemill · 16/08/2023 10:10

I finished my jumper. It does feel very Toast!

Saurus72 · 16/08/2023 10:18

@Sooverthemill That is so impressive - I think knitting is a Dark Art, have no clue how you would achieve that!

dudsville · 16/08/2023 11:09

Gogeous work @Sooverthemill, I'm evious that like grammar, it seems to be a skill beyond my capacity.

Great colour jumper @Saurus72 , I'm ignoring that there's a new shop on my radar to be checked out!

And that's great news @PretLea , I shall keep my eyes on the site.

In moth news, I've been finding a tiny white/pale grey moth in the house a few times a week. This one was IN my linen cupboard. I have family heirloom quilts in there so it's caught my attention. I've got the quilts out airing in the sun and fresh air and I've just emptied my knitwear cupboard and will be getting everything into the freezer.

ilovecherries · 16/08/2023 11:56

I think my unexpected best buy of the year (ahem -so far!) has been the suki panelled denim trousers. They’ve been a bit of a slow burn for me as I really wasn’t sure about them at first, but every time I wash them, they just get better. To the extent I’m almost tempted to buy a second pair but I’m really trying to stop doing duplicates and just trust that when something finally falls apart (hopefully not for years) there will be something else equally nice on offer.
