So I bought a new dress yesterday and have been stopped at work and in shops to ask where I got it, its really flattering and a lovely colour so if anyone is looking for a new dress I'd highly recommend this one 😃Floral Square Neck Midi Smock Dress

Floral Square Neck Midi Smock Dress

With its striking floral print, this dress offers a stylish choice for daywear. It's cut in a comfy regular fit, with a flattering square neckline and short sleeves to make it ideal for warmer weather. All-over smocking gives a figure-hugging shape thr...

Like my Mum said about food, we don’t say it’s “disgusting” or “horrible” we say “It’s not to my taste”.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 26/06/2023 11:11

I have a joules dress in the same colours, slightly different print and style, shorter slimmer sleeves and a shirt neck similar tiered skirt. Cotton jersey. It always gets loads of compliments often from strangers.

I hate viscose too. Blend Square Neck Shirred Midi Dress | M&S Collection | M&S (marksandspencer.com). There's this in cotton which is similar.

I like shirred waist but why does it always have to go with poufy sleeves.

I agree with you on all fronts!! Hate viscose and dislike puffed sleeves…

this isn’t my colour (pink) but I like the shape

JoniBlue · 26/06/2023 22:03

Not my cup of tea, but the colours are lovely, fresh and summery. Enjoy!

WeeMary · 26/06/2023 22:32

I've got this dress. I'm 5'3" and size 10. It's just above my ankles so you can see my sandals. Sleeves are not too puffy. It's gorgeous on.

dontgobaconmyheart · 27/06/2023 01:00

I wouldn't wear it and don't like it at all but very obviously things look different on different people so that says very little about it.

I do find though that people will always compliment something in a cheery pattern or print or say they like it much more than they every do at all with plain clothing.

Lentilweaver · 27/06/2023 20:28

Went to M and S and tried on OP's dress. Also tried on this dress in pink. https://www.marksandspencer.com/linen-blend-square-neck-shirred-midi-dress/p/clp60583122?color=FUCHSIA#intid=carousel_FUNH_AT_PHOENIX-SIMILAR-PERSONALISED_END_PDP_16_3:23bdba76-23d0-43de-82f1-d595b807c51d&extid=af_Sub+Networks_Skimlinks_----AWIN-ms--_-78888&sv_campaign_id=78888&sv_tax1=affiliate&sv_tax3=Skimlinks&sv_tax4=mumsnet.com&sv_affiliate_id=78888&awc=1402_1687893895_03e00065925d89f53db1af1a4d44c99b Both looked horrible on me.

I am tall-ish, between 5'7 and 8, and slim-ish, a size 10, and not busty, but the milkmaid style still does not suit me at all. I hated the tiers on both, and the puff sleeves, and the general floufiness of it.

Going back to straight, simple, boring shift dresses. But there are very few to found. Tried on so many dresses in M and S, and eventually came back with a pair of cargo trousers.:( I think I don't suit "pretty" dresses.

Looks really nice on you though, OP!

Linen Blend Square Neck Shirred Midi Dress

This versatile linen-blend dress is great for daytime and evening outings alike. Cut to a regular fit, the bodice sits close to the body with stretchy shirring before flaring into a swishy, tiered midi skirt. The square neckline and three-quarter puff...

Due to this thread, I had a last minute trip to m&s.

I liked the neckline on the dress... Didn't like the sleeves or the length. Also tried on several other dresses. None of them quite me.

M&S not quite hitting the mark for me at the moment.

Very Aunt Beryl. 🫣

Just don’t wear a denim jacket and white pumps with it.

Please.

What a misogynistic comment.

Dixiechickonhols · 28/06/2023 12:49

Well you influenced me Op and my dress arrived today. It’s lovely on, I’m 5ft 8 and in a 12. Don’t get the hatred for viscose it hangs well and is comfortable.
I also ordered the linked cotton dress in bright pink and that was awful in comparison and will be going back.
I won’t post a pic as I don’t want comments how hideous I look, especially as will probably wear it with my white or silver supaga pumps and my sosander denim jacket! I’m almost 50 and happy with my style. I’ve been to lots of Uni open days with dc recently and many mums are wearing similar, dress and trainers is definitely still going strong from what I can see.
Print isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I like bright colours and Orla kiely style so it’s mine.
Thank you for sharing Op.

Lentilweaver · 28/06/2023 13:02

Viscose feels rough on my skin and makes me sweat in the Tube. That's why the hate:) But not everyone feels that way, and it is certainly easier to maintain.

Cannot wait for the puff sleeves, tiered trend to die out but have been waiting over 2 years now.

Stewball01 · 28/06/2023 14:16

Not my cup of tea. It'd make me look preggers with my enormous stomach. P

Don't worry about the dress and trainers comments, I'm sure you look great. It's a privilege wearing bright dresses - men can't! Well they could but you know what I mean.

BibbleandSqwauk · 29/06/2023 07:04

I wear a lot of dresses like that with white or gold trainers and a denim jacket, and I'm short too - oh well!

IncomingTraffic · 29/06/2023 07:20

I tried this dress a few weeks ago. It just didn’t work for me. It was huge and swamped me, and there is no bra I own that I can wear with it (bra-less is not an option here).

Ah this is nice.
Some people have been really mean on this thread.
It's one thing to say the style wouldn't work well on your own figure, it's another to sneer away saying it's hideous.

Enjoy your dress.

I have NOTHING in my wardrobe with puffed sleeves.

I went to the big Westfield in London and honestly couldn't find much in the dress department that wasn't tiered or puff sleeved or viscose, on the high street at least. A few tshirt dresses in Uniqlo but very dull colours. Where do you go? I have a couple of cotton dresses from Mango last year, which have normal sleeves and no tiers, and still wearing those.

I've just had a think and actually most of my summer dresses are sleeveless so I suppose that's cheating a bit in terms of not having puffed sleeves.
Do you need sleeves?
I do have an M&S one with t.shirt style sleeves but it's a couple of years old.

I have some winter jumper dresses with normal sleeves. They were from Uniqlo.

Lentilweaver · 29/06/2023 09:45

I can wear sleeveless, but prefer half sleeves in summer. Winter is easier to find normal sleeves, I think.

Catspyjamas17 · 29/06/2023 11:12

The dress is nice and I'm sure it suits your curves and colouring beautifully, OP.

Catspyjamas17 · 29/06/2023 11:19

I do like the fact M&S have allowed customers to uploads photos of them wearing it. Many websites now show models of different sizes wearing their clothes but they still tend to be either up to a size ten or size sixteen or more. What about the group "not sure whether to order a 12 or a 14"? Must be quite popular sizes, surely.
